Episode 1

The conclave has elected Lenny Belardo, aka Pius XIII, the Holy See, making him the first American pope in history. Immediately after his election, Pius XIII summoned to the Vatican Mary sister he called his personal assistant, and first bulwark against the curia. Cardinal Voiello, the pontiff will have to deal with several major figures of the Vatican: Bishop Gutierrez, master of papal liturgical celebrations, and Don Tommaso, the confessor priest whom he asked to break the secret of the confessional.

As relentless and unpredictable, Pius XIII continues to impose its choice. Voiello worries about positions that could jeopardize diplomatic relations and, tarnish the image of the Catholic Church itself. Pius XIII visits his mentor, Cardinal Spencer. Pius XIII asked him to help him govern and to accept the post of prefect of the Congregation of the Clergy.

Lenny plans to lead the revival of conservative Christianity, despite the efforts of Spencer and Voiello. Lenny forces Voiello to admit that the liberals in the College of Cardinals did not allow the election of Conservative Spencer, which led to an agreement between the two men to use Lenny as a puppet. When Lenny threatens to excommunicate Voiello from the church, the liberal cardinal is forced to swear allegiance to him. Later, during a chance meeting with Esther, the wife of a Swiss guard, Lenny has an attack.

Episode 4

Lenny arranges the delivery of the body of the sister of one of the nuns to the Vatican for burial, and then at the funeral scolds the sister for crying. Lenny refuses to raise Spencer and cuts off all ties with him as punishment for his attempt to manipulate him. Voiello gives Esther a job as an assistant to the Pope in the hope that they will begin a sexual relationship, which he can use to his advantage. Lenny's comments about the assistant of the Prime Minister of Greenland (whom some cardinals flirted with) and his appeal to the Prime Minister himself alienate him from Sofia, the head of the Vatican's marketing department and Lenny's closest ally outside the Holy See.

Episode 5

Lenny rejects the suggestion of Esther's proximity, which violates Voiello's plans on the basis of a sexual scandal to remove him. Lenny reveals that he has long known all the secrets, including Voiello, Gutierrez and Tommaso. The Papal tiara is delivered to the Vatican, and Lenny finally turns to the cardinals.

Esther gives birth to a son, whom she calls Pius. Lenny finally meets with the Italian Prime Minister, who is given a list of shocking and ridiculous demands, using political blackmail to achieve his goals. Lenny is forcing Cardinal Dussolier, his childhood friend and now the Cardinal, who is responsible for approving new priests, to stop approving new priests who do not adhere to clerical celibacy, as well as homosexuals, regardless of their commitment to the vow. The young seminar is denied admission and he commits suicide in St. Peter's Square.

Episode 7

Voiello and Dussolier are desperate to make Lenny see the scale of the catastrophe caused by his actions. Sister Mary takes decisive steps to save the Church, which makes a deep impression on Voiello. Lenny is shocked and excited about the prospect of a reunion with his parents. The Cardinals make a deal with Spencer, who is talking heart to heart with Lenny. Dussolier makes his own decision about his life, which leads to tragic consequences.

Episode 8

Lenny prays for the soul of Dussolier, and sister Mary bitterly laments the death of her former pupil. Lenny calls Sophia, who advises him to visit the famous mission center in Africa. To everyone's surprise, the Pope agrees. During his journey, the press unsuccessfully tries to talk to Lenny, and tells Voiello that Curtwell may have been blackmailing the pontiff. In Africa, the Pope has conflicting feelings about the activities of Sister Anthonia, but his attempt at recognition is interrupted when a local priest hands him a revealing note. Now, carefully observing the injustices, Lenny is giving an inspirational speech.

Episode 9

In New York, Cardinal Gutierrez, now convinced of Kurtwell's guilt, is desperate to convince his former victims to testify. Realizing that he must resort to more unpleasant tactics, Gutierrez does what Kurtwell can not oppose anything. In desperation, Kurtwell puts out the incriminating evidence collected on Lenny, but this only worsens his situation - the letters are so beautiful that they instantly become a worldwide sensation. Meanwhile, Spencer, who is on his deathbed in the Vatican, asks Lenny to repeat the miracle that he performed as a teenager.

Episode 10

Impressed by the work of Gutierrez, Lenny asks him to take on the role of his personal secretary, and then expels Kurtwell to Alaska. Lenny sends Sister Mary to Africa to take Antonia's place, saying that she can call him by name, while he can call her "Ma." Upon learning that one day he may be declared a saint, Lenny agrees to spend Christmas in Guatemala among the patients of Blessed Juana. However, at the last moment, Lenny decides to meet his demons and sets off for Venice.
