Set in 1920s London, a brutal and bloodthirsty murder has stained the plush carpets of a handsome London townhouse. The victim is the glamorous and rich Emily French. All the evidence points to Leonard Vole, a young chancer to whom the heiress left her vast fortune and who ruthlessly took her life. At least, this is the story that Emily's dedicated housekeeper Janet McIntyre stands by in court. Leonard however, is adamant that his partner, the enigmatic chorus girl Romaine, can prove his innocence. Tasked with representing Leonard is his solicitor John Mayhew and King's Counsel, Sir Charles Carter KC.

Socialite Emily French lives hedonistic life pursuing male company. Seeing hunky commoner Leonard Vole being fired on the spot from his waiter job at a fancy club for a tripping he couldn't help, she asks him for a ride home, then admits it was just a polite ploy to get him home and offers him $5 for naughty games, notably bathing in her tub with her shamelessly lusting at the sight. In the morning, the suspiciously devoted and possessive maid -whose grim hints to leave he had ignored- calls the police to her bloody corpse and screams only Vole could have killed her. The police brutally beats and drags the 'swine' to rot in a cell until the court is expected to convict him as the press demands. Tack attorney John Mayhew offers his services as legal defense, which he can hardly afford, and is told Leonard's 'wife', well unmarried steady partner, can provide an alibi, but she's an exotic cabaret dancer.
