Malcolm Webster, a nurse at an Aberdeen hospital, has a lifestyle he cannot afford, and when his wife Claire shows her displeasure at his debts, he drugs her with drugs stolen from the hospital to stop her from interfering but when she announces that she has a doctor's appointment to diagnose her lethargy, he stages a car crash in which she is killed and he apparently injured. Though playing the grieving widower at her funeral, he soon blows the £200,000 life insurance and moves to New Zealand, where he meets Felicity Drumm. She becomes his second wife, desirous of domestic bliss in their dream home, but he is already considering sending her the same way as Claire, despite the birth of their son.

Felicity's father Brian grows suspicious of Webster after a fire at their home and, helped by his other daughter Jane, forces open his son-in-law's briefcase to discover that he is planning to stage another 'accident' to cash in on his wife's life-insurance policy. Brian saves Felicity, but Webster flees after telling her "You would've died happy". Five years later he is back in Scotland working as a health and safety officer and starting another fire to get close to Simone Banerjee, an independently-wealthy nurse. He shaves his head and pretends to have leukaemia, so that she will pity and marry him, but the police have become aware of his past through Jane, and DS Charlie Henry of the Oban police decides to investigate him.

Unaware of Webster's murderous intentions, Simone is undergoing IVF treatment trying for a child. Charlie Henry has cause to intervene when Webster is accused of embezzling money from the angling club of which he is treasurer, and though a search of his house reveals stolen laptops and an illegal firearm, efforts to charge Webster fail through a technicality. However, when Charlie becomes aware of Webster's involvement with fires, he warns Simone that she is in danger and, discovering that he is still married to Felicity and not terminally ill, she leaves him. She is shocked to find that he was planning to kill her too by tampering with a life-jacket she was to use on a planned sailing trip, but Webster is eventually arrested when forensic evidence links him to his first wife's murder and he is ultimately convicted.
