The "Us vs. Them" dimension of our winner-take-all system has trapped us in a cycle that's about winning the next election through the technique of vilifying people as traitors to their side if they consider other viewpoints. If a party's platform is more about "the other side is a threat" rather than actual policy, violence becomes more likely. Alternative solutions such as the Interstate Compact where states award their votes to the Presidential popular vote winner are discussed.

The actual politics of each party have been very fluid over the years depending on the individuals who become representative of each side, often determined by what ideas they can put forth to win the most votes. Conservatism is a term used by the Right in reference to themselves but, as an idea, it is different from the Right and, at its origins, it was defined by emphasis on stability, tradition, and family values.
