In the 40 or so years since Ronald Reagan was elected President, the population of the United States has soared by 100 million, nearly 50%. The current U.S. fertility rate is 1.77% (a number which is below the replacement fertility rate of 2.1%). Immigrants and their U.S. born descendants are expected to provide most of the population gains in the years ahead, and issues such as "chain migration" are considered. An America that is becoming older and more diverse in terms of ethnicity, race, and religion will, by necessity, have to adjust to the impact of these factors that will affect the makeup of the typical household unit including family identities of wage-earners and dependents.
