Episode 1

Having killed Richard lll to become king of England Henry Tudor ruthlessly disposes of his enemies and orders Richard's niece and rumoured lover Elizabeth of York to his court with her family, her mother having sent her little son Perkin to safety. Henry must choose a wife and his mother Margaret Beaufort, backed by parliament, insists he marry Elizabeth to unite the houses of Lancaster and York, over her younger sister Cicely. Whilst Elizabeth's mother does not get the response she wanted Elizabeth finds herself pregnant with Henry's child after a sexual encounter, thus sealing her fate as England's new queen - with an agenda against her husband.

As Henry prepares to tour his kingdom Elizabeth insists on accompanying him, and visiting York to meet potential allies but her mother dissuades her, putting herself forward instead. Suspecting a plot Margaret Beaufort detains her, taking her place, and visiting York, where Henry survives an assassination attempt by Yorkist Francis Lovell. He suspects the dowager's involvement. In London the plague strikes and Elizabeth defies the austere Bishop Morton by raiding the treasury to help the sick. With the idea spreading that Henry brought the plague to England rebellion is in the air and Margaret orders the arrest of Elizabeth's cousin Edward as its likely figurehead. However Elizabeth persuades her husband that to rule by fear will do him no good.

Elizabeth gives painful birth to a son, Arthur, whilst Henry's uncle Jasper travels to Burgundy where Duchess Margaret, sister of Richard lll , shelters Yorkist exiles to propose an alliance. However circumstances prevent this. As Elizabeth and Henry prepare for the coronation Elizabeth hears from her mother, exiled to Bermondsey Abbey, bidding her to contact Margaret to overthrow Henry but Elizabeth is concerned that any rebellion would harm the baby to whom she has become attached.

Episode 4

Whilst Margaret Beaufort plans to marry Elizabeth's sisters to Tudor lords and betroth Arthur to Spanish princess Catherine of Aragon Elizabeth persuades Henry to free Edward from prison. However support for the boy increases Henry's paranoia. Meanwhile the events in Burgundy during Jasper's stay propel the duchess into sending an invasion force, leading to a pitched battle where Henry is triumphant. Henry shows mercy to Lambert Simnel, the child the Burgundians have passed off as Edward V and, to Margaret Beaufort's disgust, Elizabeth's mother.

Five years later Elizabeth has grown to love Henry and both are suspicious when Margaret of Burgundy sends word that Richard, one of the princes in the Tower, has survived and is the rightful king. His cousin Margaret and husband Richard Pole are sent to France to verify his identity whilst in England the Dowager refuses to accept her daughter's second son Henry as the Duke of York and the ailing Jasper extracts a shocking confession from Margaret Beaufort, which seals his fate.

In Burgundy the claimant's marriage to Scots royalty Catherine Gordon is attended by several European rulers but Henry discovers his real name is Perkin Warbeck. Elizabeth and Henry travel to Spain to cement an alliance by betrothing Arthur to princess Catherine of Aragon but the formidable Queen Isabella will only consent after Henry has disposed of his opposition. Returning to England Henry is faced with another rebellion, led by Warbeck, but, after visiting her dying mother, Elizabeth rallies the discontented troops and Warbeck is defeated.

Episode 7

Perkin Warbeck is brought back to England and is paraded around London to be shamed. But he still refuses to denounce his claim to the throne. With the King growing more and more paranoid, there is growing tension between Elizabeth and Margaret Pole.

Episode 8

As the duchess of Burgundy aims to free Perkin with a Scots army Elizabeth, half-believing that he is her brother Richard and recalling her mother's curse on the killers of the princes in the Tower, asks Henry to spare him for the sake of their sons. Henry, shocked by a confession from his mother, is in a quandary but, faced with an ultimatum from Spain he and Elizabeth must take grim action to save the throne.
