Nonagenarian General Fentimann is found dead of an apparent heart attack at his gentlemen's club on Armistice Day, the same day as his estranged sister, passes on too. The lawyer representing the estate recruits Wimsey to investigate the matter in order to discover which of the siblings died first as that would greatly affect which side of the family would inherit the bulk of the fortune.

Fentinman is convinced he's being followed by a shadowy character called Oliver, but it's possible he doesn't exist. That, plus a mysterious letter written by the dead man, causes Wimsey to move to have the body exhumed. That causes Miss Dormand to try to settle the estate, but it doesn't stop the doctors from autopsying the body.

The General's autopsy concludes that he was murdered by an overdose of digitalis, which mimicked the symptoms of a heart attack. Police suspicion falls on Ann Dorland, who as heir was the primary beneficiary from his death and later refused a settlement with the other heirs before the results of the post-mortem were known. Media and popular opinion view her behavior with suspicion.
