Johnny opens by noting that the show's tapings were cancelled the previous two nights due to the start of Operation Desert Storm in Iraq; much of the monologue consists of jokes about the Gulf War. The comedy segment is new products predicted for the next 20 years, inspired by the book "Future Stuff" that predicts items to be available in the year 2000. The ones Johnny reads from the book have not come to pass. Then come the ones created by the writers, with illustrative props. As he goes through the props, Johnny keeps a running tally on what was spent to create them. Dyan Cannon comes out and quickly gets giggly, as she tends to do with Johnny. They talk about relationships and marriage and divorce (she is separating from her husband), and she explains how she wrote the movie "The End of Innocence" about how men and women fail to communicate. A clip from the movie is shown. She notes that she also raised the money for the film and directed it. She says she hopes it will do well, but says that it has already given her confidence. Johnny asks if she would get married again, and she says she believes in marriage but is doubtful she will do it again. Johnny also mentions that Cannon's brother Dave Friesen was scheduled to be a guest on the previous night's show. Brian Haley does a stand-up comedy routine. Patrika Darbo is announced, but does not appear due to lack of time.

Miko Hughes, "two sleeps" away from turning 5, comments on making "Kindergarten Cop" with Arnold Schwarzenegger, who he saw in the studio hallway earlier in the day. He talks about visiting the Magic Castle, and Johnny shows him a magic trick with an invisible change purse; Hughes then tells several "knock knock" jokes. David Brenner performs stand-up, talking about his 20-year anniversary appearance on the show, and then is interviewed briefly. Roger Rees, now playing Robin on "Cheers", talks about moving with his Yorkshire Terrier to Los Angeles. He comments on his mother's mangling of common phrases, recalling that she advised him to avoid the "raft of God." He also discusses his role in the upcoming movie "If Looks Could Kill".

Brooke Adams talks about doing three movies in succession. She discusses "The Unborn", then "Sometimes They Come Back" - both horror films; she says she gets offered many horror films. She talks about her first film "Shock Waves", and demonstrates a scream. She also talks about how the actors don't see the monsters, but have to act as if they are present. Then she talks about living in Spain in her 20s, and making a movie there with Sean Connery after imagining she'd worked with him before. For the comedy segment, Johnny first reads descriptions of various TV pilots announced by the networks, followed by some other show ideas from the Tonight Show writers. B.J. Sniff is a seven-year-old from Wisconsin who got into some trouble with the police for collecting feathers off the ground in his backyard and nearby forests. He tells his story and shows his collection, and Johnny presents him with additional feathers sent by the San Diego Zoo. B.J. also demonstrates a magic trick, wrapping a penny in a piece of paper - when unwrapped, the penny is gone. He says that on his trip he is going to go to Disneyland and to see Hollywood studios. Leonard Nimoy first discusses his previous appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny, 23 years ago. He sang in that appearance, trying to broaden his appeal beyond Spock. He also talks about being identified with "Star Trek" and how NBC canceled the series, noting how it's been doing well ever since. He says he is grateful for his connection to the Star Trek franchise. He then talks about growing up as a child of immigrants from Ukraine, saying that his parents refused to teach their children Russian despite speaking it fluently themselves. He recalls visiting his family's village a few years ago, while in Russia for a screening of "Star Trek IV". Nimoy then talks about his TV movie "Never Forget", based on the true story of an Auschwitz survivor who successfully defeated a Holocaust denier in court. He then discusses the "Star Trek VI" movie that is in the works. Bill Maher does a stand-up comedy routine about relations between men and women. During his interview he talks about not being married, though he recently bought an expensive ring for his girlfriend of two and a half years.

The comedy segment is foreign products based on U.S. products, inspired by some real products with different packaging - including a box of Trix cereal from Iraq featuring Saddam Hussein's picture next to the Trix rabbit, an Indonesian Pepsi can, and a Soviet edition of Monopoly. Jay Leno only does an interview - he tells a story about his 80-year-old father getting an extended 30-year warranty on new windows; Johnny recalls that his father found a Polaroid camera too confusing, and Leno relates how his parents often get mixed up about the various places he performs. They talk about various old cars they have owned, and Leno then tells how he recently put a fire extinguisher system in his Ford Cobra and then accidentally activated it while driving on the Ventura Freeway. He then talks about being recognized by recent immigrants. The Oak Ridge Boys perform. Jaleel White comes out with ice cream he made without using rock salt - a point of debate when he had been on with Leno as host; Johnny compliments it. Since White is a sports fan, Johnny gives him a shirt he received from Magic Johnson. Asked about his success, White said he doesn't have access to the money he's earned. He enjoys cooking and collecting trading cards. Johnny reads a tabloid article about screaming fans tearing off his clothes in a store's changing room, but he says it is untrue. He also says he admires Ron Howard and would like to follow his example, becoming a director. Johnny announces at the end of the show that stage manager Kevin Quinn is getting married over the coming weekend; Johnny offers him marriage counseling.

John Candy and Maureen O'Hara come out together to talk about their film "Only the Lonely". Johnny is clearly more interested in O'Hara. She explains why she left pictures 20 years earlier to enjoy life with her husband (a pilot and aviation executive) and how she decided to do this movie. She raves about Candy's acting talent; a clip from the movie is shown. She then talks about her earlier movie "Miracle on 34th Street", and how children recognize her from that role. John Candy talks a bit about his ownership of the Canadian Football League team the Argonauts.

There is no comedy segment. Robin Williams does a lot of jokes ranging from topic to topic, including the Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Iraq's chemical weapons, the turmoil in the Soviet Union and decline of communism, and much more. He then talks about his film "Hook", which is about to complete filming. After that he recalls his studies at Juilliard, and does an impression of a Shakespearean actor in an adult film, and of Stallone and Schwarzenegger doing Shakespeare. He then talks about his movie "The Fisher King", and the nature of filming on location in New York City among vagrants while playing one himself. Jonathan Winters comes on wearing a Civil War-style military uniform. In between the jokes he talks about winning an Emmy Award and why he was not at the ceremony. He also talks about visiting his Ohio hometown, his fear of earthquakes, his pets, and attending a dog show. Park Overall brings Johnny some genuine Tennessee moonshine. She talks about how people from Memphis react to her Appalachian accent from the east end of the state, and how Virginians regard themselves as different from other Southerners. Her talking about the South inspires Winters to do a character as the last Civil War veteran, and Williams joins in as a caretaker. Overall also talks a bit about not being that interested in getting married.
