Episode 24

Burt Reynolds/Dick Shawn

Wed, Nov 5, 1986

Johnny comments on the election campaign which just ended, expressing relief that the TV commercials are over, and astonishment over the $20 million spent on the close Senate race between Alan Cranston and Ed Zschau. Johnny and Ed then discuss how they spent the previous week off, mostly talking about Ed's trip on his boat from Marina del Rey to Long Beach, which Johnny considers an embarrassingly short trip. For the comedy segment, Johnny describes special moments that happened on shows which were supposedly recorded just in case the "specials" of the previous week (the World Series) ended early. Johnny first talks to Burt Reynolds about his Cosmopolitan centerfold of 1973 and the joke version he had given to Johnny. Reynolds also talks about aging and his choices of movies to make, says that his relationship with Loni Anderson has passed the five-year mark, and offers his thoughts on marriage. His next topic is how he is working on his autobiography, and possible titles. Johnny then quizzes him with questions from the California Drivers Test, since Reynolds has made two "Cannonball Run" driving movies. Dick Shawn does a stand-up comedy routine. During his interview segment, he talks about performing at smaller venues, and the acts that perform with him.

Episode 26

Alan Thicke/Rosanna Arquette/Oprah Winfrey

Fri, Nov 7, 1986

There is no comedy segment; Johnny talks about accidentally cutting off a piece of his ear while trimming some hairs. Alan Thicke discusses his role as a murdered talk show host on an upcoming Perry Mason TV movie. He also talks about other roles he has had, particularly on "The Love Boat", and an awful skiing movie that was re-shot as an exploitation film with new hot tub scenes. They also talk about phobias, and Thicke discusses doing a non-nude photo shoot for Playgirl magazine. Rosanna Arquette mentions that she was recently married, and also says she is attracted to musicians. She admits being sensitive to critics' reviews - even when she tries to avoid them, friends still send the clippings. She then talks about her film "Nobody's Fool", then mentions that her episode of "Saturday Night Live" will air the following night after having been taped two weeks earlier when the World Series pre-empted its live broadcast. She also comments on how she bought a Porsche on a whim while playing a call girl; she notes that her husband drives it now, while she bought a Jeep truck but recently crashed it. Oprah Winfrey talks about phobias and unsettling dreams, then tells a lengthy story about a dress mishap at the Oscars after some alterations were done, which resulted in her not really being able to sit down. She also recalls being a newscaster in Nashville. She and Johnny then talk about people's TV viewing habits, and she says most people lie about watching PBS; she then tells a story about an aggressive autograph seeker.

Episode 31

Jack Paar/Stephen Lang

Tue, Nov 18, 1986

The comedy segment is excerpts from school records of famous people (which are strangely relevant to current events). Jack Paar talks about his career and when he hosted The Tonight Show. He speaks voraciously, with Johnny having little chance to comment. Stephen Lang talks about doing "Death of a Salesman" on Broadway with Dustin Hoffman, and then doing the TV version. He also discusses pre-acting jobs: at a moving company and as a cab driver. He talks about a recent "60 Minutes" profile of his father Eugene Lang, the businessman who offered scholarships to the entire class of New York's P.S. 121, the elementary school in East Harlem he had attended decades before (later the "I Have a Dream Foundation"). Ellen DeGeneres does not perform her scheduled stand-up routine due to lack of time.
