London fire district chief Kev Allison is bitter after a long and painful revalidation, leaving him covered in horrible scars, incurred when closed in during an arson-caused fire cave-in. He lashes out mainly at paper-pushing superior Nick Chandhrakla, ultimately gorily confronts the chief, drunk, at his decoration ceremony. Still he puts victims and public first, while acting as a strict father for his rough, playful men, including a rookie, whose dragon tattoo suggests he, not street punks, caused the fire.

After nine months, fire chief Kevin works the courage to divulge his secret, while his partner, tired of his frustration over his inability to 'perform in bed', does it with Mal. Kev and secretly sabotaging novice Dennis 'Asbo' try questioning eye-witnesses in the bock where Kev was abused and so horribly burned.

Kevin planned to enjoy a night in a strip joint with Mal as a treat to ask him as best man, but gets his confession of infidelity with the bride, pretends to know already, finds out she's lesbian and still pretends all is right. Little Al is beaten black and blue in a cage fight, yet gets up against agreement with a bookie fiend and is hence beaten up by his goons despite revealing his bank account password. Kevin also discovers that Dennis Asbo's buddy George is Gog, the hooligan responsible for his excruciating injuries, follows him home but keeps quiet for the punk's elderly family's sake. Hotshot Tom, who intended to propose to his girl friend on Heron Tower, has to be rescued the the firemen, one of whom faints on the job, so Asbo has to rescue him first. Little Al is allowed to see his son Liam, despite being short on alimony, but the puppy is scared off by his black and blue face.

Kevin decides it's not possible to cohabit further with Trish after her infidelity with his former best mate Mal, offers to move out and demand a transfer, but she leaven having disclosed she never confided her wretched youth and previous debauchery. The team needs a cattle wrench to evacuate a daughter as heavy as a prize bull. Dennis 'Asbo' is tricked by 'mate' Gogo into a night of excessive drinking and mischief, even abuse of his mother, but she forbids him to contact the police, fearing revenge. Kev tracks down Gogo's dangerous pit-bull to dispose of it.

Kev's romantic rivalry with snake Mal compromises the fire crew's cohesion during exercises, all the men side sincerely with their cuckolded boss. It risks having tragic consequences when Mal works out his frustration on Asbo during a rescue in an abandoned, flooding factory where a foolishly wandered-off school girls got lost. Kev disposes of Gog's equally dangerous pit-bull.

Dennis can't handle his secret anymore and confesses that he and Gog caused the terribly fire where Kev got burnt. Shocked, Kev thinks about throwing the tearful trash to his death, but ends up even keeping his secret. Mal has asked fora transfer and refuses to believe that the mates may still forgive him if he changes his haughty attitude. Al's wife, out of a babysit, dumps son Liam on him, who proves quite a handful, but his mates get them trough.
Episode 7

Tension culminates as never before along the firemen, now the transfer to the country is about to come through. Helping recover a corpse lost from a speeding hearse proves even more hilarious, like rescuing a drunk man caught with his head in a litter-box. Everything has to wait when a spilled chemical tank starts a huge fire in a busy tunnel. Hell-bent to redeem himself, Asbo gets wounded badly trying to evacuate Kev's ex Trish, who was a passenger in her abandoned, mentally handicapped daughter Grace's adoptive mother's car.
Episode 8

Kev and Trish both recover and decide they want to be lovers again. He is however in a dark mental state, with weird memory shortcuts, so instead of driving her to the coast in his dream sports-car or the nostalgic camper van that rekindles his youth, he drives a firetruck alone all the way before realizing so ans skinny dips while he waits for her to follow. Gog refuses to apologize or even obtain from routine abuse of building neighbors, driving arson survivor Rosa, whose baby was killed, to set fire to his own flat. Kev rescues the other dweller but stops Asbo from dragging Gog out, which gives him nightmares rather then satisfaction.
