In Foxburg, Pennsylvania, the constructor John Nolan has just divorced his wife and former sweetheart. He goes to the bank and meets the manager Stacy to open his safe deposit box. Out of the blue, there is a heist and John protects Stacy that presses the alarm and summons the police. Nine months later, the forties Nolan leaves the academy and joins LAPD as a rookie with his colleagues Lucy Chen and Jackson West. Sergeant Wade Grey immediately does not like Nolan, believing that he is living a mid-life crisis. Talia Bishop, Tim Bradford and Angela Lopez are assigned as training officers of Nolan, Chen and West respectively that need to prove their value in the police department. But the life of a rookie is not easy in the LAPD.

Every rookie ends up forfeiting the day off prize, out of growing loyalty. West dives headfirst into the competition to prove himself while Nolan and Bishop, who is refusing to play at all, find themselves dealing with a mob-connected banker and help out some homeless. The other TOs want Tim to win, as the competition is his last fond memory of his lost partner Isabelle.

Nolan regrets not having escorted home his former academy mentor Jeremy Hawke after somewhat excessive drinking, for he decided to take off with his doting teen son Logan as his estranged wife is expected to get full custody for mild abuse. So even Tim finds it daunting having to chase a model cop who can thinks ahead of every move.

Ignoring their instructions to stay in the patrol car, Payne observes Nolan and Bishop deescalate a situation involving a mentally impaired young giant from a troubled neighborhood, which leads to his over-protective brother turning on Rupert, and real dangerous situation when Rupert tries to help the family returning alone. Tim Bradford is shattered, learning his wife Isabel is arrested in a drug bust, forcing Bradford him to decide whether to stick to his strict respect for the law or spare her a long sentence by removing a bag from her home before it's to be searched. After West tips off Lopez that she is eligible for detective exam, she attempts leveraging small drug dealers into giving up a 'big fish' in a gang which has its own lawyers, which backfires for all of them.

Soon they learn that their radios and cellular are jammed by a system in the basement and they need to fight for their lives.

Working with Grey, after learning their kids are visiting on college leave, Nolan is overeager to do it by the book, too nervous to pull that off and extremely unlucky, so they nearly get thrashed by a criminal crone and arrive damaged to son Henry Nolan and daughter Dominique Grey, who bond while worrying over their fathers' cop risks, with an extra demonstration when an fresh ex-con seeks to get locked up for life. Wes is rudely barked off when offering to help when the domestic alert at the divorced Dariush Ghorbani couple answered by Lopez and Chen turns fatal. Night school lawyer Wesley Evers finds Wes's TO rudely unhelpful, and after Wes convinces her the smart thing is help catch his briefcase thief Wes duly turns on her systematic violation of suspect rights, yet ends up dating her.

On Valentine's Day, Bradford takes his first day off in years to meet up with his wife in rehab but they end up breaking off after Tim telling her he can never trust her again and that she can't move past her personality as an addict if they remain together. Arriving at a car crash, Nolan saves the female driver's life, who lost her husband a year ago and tries everything to get together with Nolan, even cozying up to Ben to get close to Nolan. Lopez and West interrogate alleged assault victim Kevin Scott, who claims dementia, but turns out a dangerous criminal. West hits it off with a male nurse. Lopez searches Evers' smartphone, wrongly assuming he cheated, and turns on him for defending dodgy victims of police brutality. Nolan hosts a party for his first Valentine's Day in a long time without company and is surprised when TO Bishop attends.

Caught Stealing

Nolan thinks it's a ripoff cloths trap when the dress on the girl he arrests falls apart, yet jails her correctly, only to learn she's the spoiled girl of street gang baron Cole Midas, who listens only to his jailed father Leonard 'king' Midas. Nolan is offered protection at home while the gang is squeezed by drying their income, but Nolan refuses to hide and Cole takes aim higher up the LAPD food chain.

The Shake Up

When there is a major earthquake in LA, there is also a breakdown in their means of communication, and they need to flee from the killers.

West and Angela have to see the behavior of an innocent woman called Samantha after losing ten years of her life. Tim and Chen go to a paintball club and Nolan and Talia are assigned to check the behavior of a lowlife called Terry. He mentions the name of Dylan and that reference affects Talia. Then Nolan has to face a judge since he is being sued by a con artist but he does not trust in the young lawyer assigned by the police union to defend him.

When Nolan has the chance to participate in the investigation with Detective Kevin Wolfe, he does not hesitate to join the search for the gang of car thieves.
