Episode 1

Ukrainian Painting, a Kayak and a Booking Calendar

Jay Blades and his team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. The first visitor to arrive is Maria Kirk with a Ukrainian Painting, belonging to her father, who got it from his father when he was ordained as a Catholic priest in a little village called Skoviatyn in West Ukraine. WWII broke out and they had to flee, captured between the Russians and the Germans. He hided the painting in the lining of the jacket and it got very damaged. They were sent to a labor camp and survived. Maria wants to bring it back to the church in the Ukraine. Art conservator Lucia Scalisi must accomplish a mission to repair this painting. Second to arrive are brothers Stephen Hills and Nigel from Kent with a Kayak, belonging to his father Brian, who bought it using a construction kit in the 1960's to assemble the kayak. The hull is complete and the rest you must do yourself. Stephen still has the original blueprints construction plans. Brian loved to be on the water and to work with wood. He worked an insurance broker in London. His mother died in 1998 and his father in 2002. Stephen and his brother had no place to store the kayak. It has to be stored in the garden under a sail for 20 years. The wood is cracked. Dominic Chinea must repair the kayak, what is a very difficult task. Finally to arrive is Peter McFall from Surray with a 1963 Booking Calendar, belonging to his father who used it to write down all the bands which he booked in the Cavern in Liverpool. The calendar is badly damaged and paper restorer Angelina Bakalarou shows us how to repair this calendar for the future.

Military Bugle, a Worn-Out Pair of Toddler's Shoes and a Matchstick Big Ben

Jay Blades and his team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. The first visitor to arrive are former Artillery Staff Sergeant Billy Baxter with Nicky Shaw, director: Welfare at the Blind Veterans UK with a 1885th old Bugle belonging to Nicky Shaw's great grandfather passing trough to her grandfather who used it when he was at the scouts. The bugle is used by the blind ex-veteran Billy to sign for dinner etc in the Blind Veterans UK. The bugle is full of dents and is missing a few items. Pete Woods has his hands full to repair the dents and let it shine as new. Second to arrive are Nechama Freibach and daughter Shia with a Worn-Out Pair of Toddler's Shoes, belonging to Nechama when she was almost 1 year old. It is the last memory of her murdered family who got killed in concentration camps. Nechama and her parents are the only survivors of this tragedy. Cobbler Dean Westmoreland does its utmost to preserve this precious pair of shoes. Finally to arrive is Charlotte Fisher from Bedfordshire with a Five-Foot Matchstick Replica of the Big Ben, made by her great grandfather Edwin Aldous for the Queens Coronation. The matchsticks got loose and the clock is not working anymore. Will Kirk has a lot to do to re-attach the missing matchsticks and Steven Fletcher to repair the clock.

A Painting from Bermuda, an Arctic Thermometer and a Crushed Terrarium,

Jay Blades and his team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. The first visitor to arrive are Patricia Dangor and daughter Rokeya with a Painting from Bermuda, belonging to the grandmother and grandfather of Rokeya. Patricia father Edward Denton built the house for my mother and ordered a painting before they got married. Edward was a teacher when he built the house. Edward became the first black prime minister of Bermuda. He was Knighted by the Queen. Conservator Lucia Scalisi has to stop the peeling off the paint and fix the painting. Second to arrive is former nurse Pat Kimmel and son Nick with an Artic Thermometer. Pat and her husband Malcolm went to the North Pole to live there. The thermometer was given by scientific friends of Malcolm, who lived in the North Pole too. Malcolm was a local vicar who was visiting Pat. They fell in love and so they went for the North Pole. Pat flew as nurse to the different area's on the North Pole and Malcolm had his community. Brenton West figures out what is wrong with the Artic Thermometer and repairs it. Finally to arrive is Bekki Forrest from West Sussex with a Crushed Terrarium damaged in transit and belonging to her grandparents who are deceased and married for 68 years and lived in Spain. Bekki flow to Spain every 6 weeks to join them. After they past it was sent by courier and it arrived as seen on the table. Glass expert Matthew Nickels must perform miracles to restore the terrarium.

A Microscope a Pair of Boots and an Indoor Swinging Bench

Jay Blades and his team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. The first visitor to arrive are Felix Morson together with his dad Sam with a 1890 Microscope belonging to his great grandfather John Desmond Bernal. He was a scientist and a crystallographer in the early 20th century. Crystallography is to determine how cells form. His students discovered the double helix structure of DNA. The microscope is out of focus and needs to be cleaned and aligned. Also the casing needs a few repairs. Optical expert Richard Biggs has a lot of work to adjust the microscope. Second to arrive is Malcom Britton with a wartime souvenir which tells the story of bravery and resilience, a Pair of Army Boots when his dad Jack was a prisoner of war in WWII. He was captured in 1940 in Norway and did not participate in the war until 1945. As a prisoner of war he marched through Poland and Germany. Cobbler Dean Westmoreland has to renew the heels of the boots because they are weathered. He restores them as a memory of his father. Finally to arrive is Krishna Kataria from Hertfordshire with an Indoor Swinging Bench from Gujarat in the west of India. Her uncle had it for 125 years and was always in the family. Will Kirk must really pull out all the stops to repair this bench. Sonnaz Nooranvary starts with renewing the seat of the cushion and the cushions on the sides. They work as a team and restore the bench as new.

Simon Armitage's Harmonium, a Pair of Tiny Leather Clogs and a Sculpture made by Milos Axman

Jay Blades and his team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. The first visitor to arrive is Poet Laureate Simon Armitage with a Harmonium, holding the memories of his late father Peter. It stood in the church in Marsden were Simon grew up and lived. His mother said that they wanted to get rid of the harmonium. Simon said that he would have it and now it is in the family for 10 years. Simon sung in the church choir. Three generations have sung with this harmonium. His father died in February 2021. Peter recites a poem called Harmonium. Peter works with a band called LYR and writes numbers. David Burville has his hands full to repair this harmonium. Second to arrive is Valerie Heselgrove from Pontefract with a Pair of Leather Childrens Clogs, belonging to her sister Iris born in 1946 as second child. Iris was born 6 weeks prematurely and had several problems. Because she felt different she trow the shoes into the fire and her mother got them out of the fire, but Iris could wear them again and she was happy. Coppler Dean Westmoreland must put all his efforts in the shoes to restore them. Finally to arrive is Martin Yorkman with a sculpture of his mother Vera at the age of 27. Vera was at an Art Academy in Zlin in Czechoslovakia and became friends with a young student Milos Axman, who got famous later on. He gave the sculpture to Vera as a reminder to him. The sculpture fell off a wardrobe and got damaged. To Kirsten Ramsay a very difficult task to restore this unique piece.

Ventriloquist's Dummy called George, a Roman Chair and a Humble Little Notebook

Jay Blades and his team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. The first visitor to arrive is Alison Gunn Robson with a seized-up Ventriloquist's Dummy called George. Her ant became it from a man who performed in music halls. Alison became him when she was 11 years old. George is made in 1898. She was dyslexic and George helped her to overcome this. She gave school performances and made jokes about the teachers. George is damaged and needs a new jacket which he becomes from Julie and Amanda. Kirsten Ramsay restores the face which is damaged. Master of mechanics David Burville restores George as new. Second to arrive is Nick Webb from Somerset with a Roman-style Leather Chair, belonging to his father Richard who died on the 14th of February 1969 when Nick was 11 years old. Nick has been a few years in Australia where the chair got damaged because of the climate. The chair is missing a leg and Will Kirk is the one to fix it. Sonnaz Nooranvary is responsible for the leather upholstery. The chair becomes as new. Finally to arrive is Kat from Lanarkshire in Scotland with her grandmothers Mildred little Notebook which she created between her 10th and 13th year of life about birds and British nature. Bookbinder Christopher Shaw restores each page and make the notebook presentable again.

Windrush Special

The first visitor to arrive is Beverley Dixon from London with a Passport of her father, Edgar Alfonso White, called British Passport of Jamaica, issued Mai 1948, when the Windrush people docked in Tilbury. At the National Status stands 'British subject by birth'. Young people had difficulties to find a job in the caraiben and therefore they got the chance to go to England. The passport became thin and has to be restored. Christopher Shaw is the designated person to do restore this. Second to arrive is Keithly Brandy with a Suitcase belonging to his mother Locita Brandy and was called 'The Grip' and was used to leave from the island Nevis to Southhampton together with her husband Osbourne Brandy in England with all her possessions. In England she could only doing cleaning work. Later on she became a social worker. Tony Blair recognized her achievements for the community. The hinges of the suitcase are worn out and doesn't close and the lining is coming of. Suzie Fletcher must repair all these things. Finally to arrive is Patrick Vernon, who played a key role to call the 22 of June the National Windrush Day. He arrives with a Radiogram from the 1960's, gifted by a friend of him, Eddie Martin Noble, which was his proud possession. Eddie was born in Jamaica in 1917 and came to England in 1943 and surfed in the RAF until 1951 in the logistics department were he loaded bombs on aircrafts. He was as a father for Patrick and was almost his adopted son. He moved to a care home and got rid of his belongings and wanted that Eddie got his radiogram. Patrick died in 2007 at the age of 90. The radiogram radio and the record player didn't work at that time and is a challenge to Mark Stuckey to keep all working again.

National Health Service Special

Jay Blades and his team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. The first visitor to arrive are children's ward Katie Wilson and colleague Catherine Reed from Frimley Park Hospital in Farnborough with a Hospital Catering Food Trolley were meals are being served to the children, who love it. They both work at the children's department, Catherine for 31 years and the food trolley arrived just before. Most children have chronic problems, but you can do a lot of things to cheer up the children. The food trolley is missing several handles. A door is white instead of blue and is missing the 1. And one serving hatches is missing and several things are battered. Dominic Chinea makes the food trolley as new and deliver's it to the Hospital together with Jay Blades. Catherine goes in retirement when they delivered the food trolley. Second to arrive are daughter Elsie Rosen and Children's Book Writer and COVID survivor Michael Rosen, with a Patient Diary, who was in hospital for 40 days in a induced coma and 48 days in total on the Intensive Care in March 2020. In that time the doctors and nurses made handwritten notes about what was going on in the 'My Very' Patient Diary. The diary is falling apart and children made illustrations and drawings which are lose leaves. Christopher Shaw makes the diary and also make a new map for the illustrations and drawings. Finally to arrive are Dr. Adrian Hayter and daughter Lydia as dentistry student with a GP Doctors Bag, belonging to his father Noel, who was a GP also and worked in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. Noel studied in Rangoon Birma in the sixties and joined the NHS. When he retired after 40 years, Adrian took over and Noel gave him the doctors bag. In early times you were a GP for 24 hours and 365 days a year. He was devoted to the community and died in November 2023. The doctors bag is worn out and several syringes are stuck. Suzie Fletcher restores the doctors bag and Brenton West repairs and polishes the syringes.

A 1970's Football Program, a Broken Guitar and a British Army Medal

Jay Blades and his team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. The first visitor to arrive is Peter Grotier from Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, a former professional goalkeeper from West Ham United, with a 1970's Football Program Santos of Brazil for a practice match, signed by Pelé. Brazil just won the World Cup. The front of the program you see Pelé and Sir Bobby Moore. After the game Pelé signed the program. Paper conservator Angelina Bakalarou has a challenging task to restore the football program. Second to arrive is Alex Garroway from Coventry with a broken SG Guitar. It was his first guitar. The guitar broke when he was walking home from University. It was very slippery and he felt on his back and caught the blow. He heard the strings snap. To guitar expert Julyan Wallis a very difficult task to repair this broken guitar. Finally to arrive are Gordon Murrell and his daughter Kelly from London with an Army Medal for serving in the British Army. He served 4,5 years in Germany from 1962 until 1966. Then 9 months in the Middle-East and demobilized in 1968. At that time the British Army recruited people from Barbados. As a young man at the age of 18 and a half, you want to see the world. He had his education in England the north of Newcastle in the Northumberland Fusiliers. It was a difficult time and there was still racism. He sees the medal as a legacy but the ribbon almost disintegrates and the medal is damaged. Brenton West is trying to remove the dent in the medal and polish it, while Amanda Middleditch is focused on the ribbon with a specific color, which allows you to see where Gordon has served. Both succeeded in their task.

The first visitor to arrive is music lover Poppy Lemar with a 1966 Portable Record Player, belonging to her grandmother Catherine, who died when Poppy was 7 years old, so she can't remember her, she only knew that the music came from the player. Catherine was a party person. The record player still worked until 12 years ago. Electronics expert Mark Stuckey must replace some items and clean the record player but restores it. Second to arrive is Colin Bourne with a 1971 souvenir, a Pair of Boots, bought by Mr. Freedom in Kensington Church Street when he was in Art School. Elton John had a similar pair of shoes in a different color, which he wore on stage. The father of Colin looked and said that he had to have his head examined. One of his lecturer in Art School was Ian Drury. His live was to become a factory worker but the boots gave him the opportunity to become something else. Later on he became an art editor and later a barrister and goes soon in retirement. Cobbler Dean Westmoreland has to repair the sole and paints the shoes as new. Finally to arrive is Rachel James with a much loved bear Freddie who needs a repair. She has Freddie for 30 years. She became the bear when she was 5 years old from her mother in the zoo, because she was lost the other bear. The bear is worn out and after repair he is for her daughter Reya. The bear ladies Julie and Amanda make a new pair of clothes and a coat. Rachel is over the moon when she gets Freddie back.
