A year after discovering his first wife, Delphine, electrocuted in the bath, London socialite antique dealer Mark Easterbrook is summoned by the police when a physically decayed woman, Jessie Davis, is found dead in the street. Hidden in her shoe is a list of names that she wrote on a piece of paper. They include Mark and his secret paramour, Thomasina Tuckerton, whom Mark later finds dead in her bed but fails to report, so "Tommy's" socialite mother later finds her. Mark lies to investigating Inspector Stanley Lejeune that he knows only one man on the list, his godson in constant debt David Ardingly, and discovers on his own that Delphine and Jessie Davis had both visited the village of Much Deeping in Surrey, unnoticed except for its voodoo-like traditions including wooden king effigy decapitation, to consult a trio of women living there. Shopkeeper Zachariah Osborne, also on the list, who had employed Jesse Davis, tells Mark that the women are witches, responsible for the deaths, as nearly all listed people died in the same seemingly natural way fairly recently, fearing they're next, like David. Mark's spoiled wife Hermia secretly suspects him of adultery, having found he lied about a hastily dumped suit.
