The Orville is heading to Maclan so all Boryu's friends can attend the ceremonial annual relief of toxic substances, preferably in couples. Ed finds it impossible to deal with being dumped by Kelly 'for the ship's sake' while she makes life little easier for her now date, teacher Cassius, who appreciates tips from Ed on the illogical woman. Isaac's cold logic solves a PTA conflict over whether Dr. Claire Finn's firstborn or his best classmate James led the other knave astray, being caught drinking by Kelly. Gordon eagerly takes dating lessons from 'cool' John, yet still shies away, while a creepy-looking alien manages to convince Alana giving him a dating chance as looks aren't everything.

Primal Urges

Bortus's fellow officers are puzzled why he's so distant, even uninterested in the rare observation of a planet about to be swallowed by its exploding sun. His Moclean partner Klyden and their son are getting annoyed, even suspicious of his frequent long absences, falsely blamed on duty assignments. In fact Bortus is addicted to simulator porn role-plays, and discovering his infidelity, Klyden attempts to murder him, but is stopped and the pair sent to couples therapy. The planet's residue population is contacted to radio and found in urgent need of evacuation by shuttle, but there's insufficient time given its capacity and a damage to the spaceship puts it in danger of being fatally attracted by the expanding star itself.

They notice a lurker, and end up held at gunpoint by the neighbours, who have an agenda. The Orville sets way to pick up an alternative therapy for Alara - one she could use on-board.

Helm lieutenant Gordon Malloy surprises command by applying for the CO training program, yet doesn't do badly, but must reconsider his motivation. Captain Ed Mercer is off to spend some saved shore leave with his lover, lieutenant Janel Tyler. Only when the shuttle to the remote planet she chose is captured by a Krill squad, he discovers she's a figment. They are attacked by a hostile race, must flee together in a Krill shuttle and survive on the planet, chased by an enemy patrol, which requires collaboration to survive.

When a semi-primitive society finally calls out in space by radio, the Orville picks up the signal first and rushes there. Captain Ed's party is warmly welcomed as both sides want to discover the other. Suddenly, the state dinner turns into an outraged break-off as soon as Bortus and Kelly mention having their birthday- both are arrested as 'Gilliacs' and sent to a concentration camp, the rest of the party send back to the ship 'never to seek contact again'. It turns out the society has an astrological prejudice, causing births to be artificially shifted to avoid ill-boding months destining for a chained life as predestined criminals, while the next month means admission to the ruling elite. The Orville is forbidden by the admiralty to liberate its crew duo, hence seeks a way to outsmart the star sign bigotry.

Bortus is surprisingly cold to fellow Moclan Locar, a star engineer who visits the Orville to install a brilliant deflectors improvement. Yet his stay soon goes wrong, possibly murdered, and the crew finds out it all has to do with a Moclan taboo Locar broke with Bortus, so fearsome he prefers to disappear, then tires of hiding for the truth regardless of biter consequences. Meanwhile Kelly faces her feeling for an unrelenting suitor in recreated New York 1940s.

The Orville is puzzled when non-biological organism Isaac ceases to function, doc and her brats inconsolable as they saw him as 'new husband and father'. Admiral Halsey hesitantly allows visiting his planet Kaylon to ask them for repairs. However, the 'primary' in charge only reboots Isaac 'as a courtesy', his observation mission having been terminated and not conducive to seek joining the Union. Isaac refuses to return, except attending a 'festive sendoff' he nor the Finns actually enjoy. While Mercer argues in vain to reconsider the merits of the 'inferior' Federation, an accidentally discovered massive ossuary is only the precursor of a rude awakening for the humanoid crew.

Identity, Part II

The horrified Orville crew finds itself captured by the Kaylons, who control the ship and set course to Earth, intending to force them to help overpower the Union forces and exterminate life there. An escape attempt fails but provides just enough cover for Gordon and Kelly to escape in a small craft and set course to the neighboring Krills. While the Kaylons see through a hidden message to warn earth and a passing spaceship is destroyed, the escapees must convince their most suspicious rivals the Kaylons plan to eradicate biological life is worth joining force. Meanwhile human appeals to Isaac's alleged emotions renders him suspicious to his own Primary (leader).

Historians excite even the crew about the discovery and reactivation of a three centuries old communication device, enabling insight in the daily life of the 21st century by private smartphone. Pilot Gordon Malloy takes a personal interest in the subject, Laura Huggins, and has the simulator enable him to communicate with her, sharing an interest in music. When her avatar chooses to return to her historical boyfriend, Gordon has the simulator write him out, only to prove a mild form of the butterfly effect.

Sanctuary

The Orville is delighted with the weapon technology improvements installed by Moclan delegates Korick and Toren, but the secretive pair locks themselves up and uses abnormal energy. Sent to check up, Bortus, who actively opposes his mate Klyden encouraging son Tova to openly despise females, discovers the guests are hiding their girl baby, and agrees to keep silent until it's safely put on a cargo ship. Tova tells Klyden who informs the captain, who duly investigates, thus stumbling upon the hidden destination: a secret plant, inhabited by hundreds Amazone Moclan rebels. Their leader Heveena accepts Mercer's suggestion to apply for Union membership as sovereign republic. The Moclans send a spaceship to destroy the rebels as soon as the plea is handled, while their delegation threatens to desert the war effort by switching their alliance to the Krill, which would spell a Kaylon victory over the Union, which therefore desperately looks for a compromise.

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

While Isaac leads an experimental study of a time travel device, the ship passes a natural gravitational peak, which triggers it in enhanced mode. The result is that Kelly, who stood near it, is duplicated with a seven years younger version, as a cadet before the breakup with the future captain. Although nobody knows if she can be returned and her parallel time line undone, or the butterfly effect if not, Ed decides against preventive incarceration. Both Kellys have opposed interests, and reviving the inappropriate relationship with Ed fails anyway as he has changed too. Then Kaylons find the Orvlle's trail.

The Road Not Taken

In a parallel universe, Ed and Gordon run a pirate shuttle. They are confronted with a spaceship captained by Kelly, who explains with another part of the crew she returned from another time line because they need to set straight the disastrous future resulting from her younger self's return to its past (previous episode) because her memory sweep failed, so doc must follow there to do it properly. First they must deal with the state of humanity reduced to rickety rebels to prepare everything, under Kaylon attack.
