After her father dies, Botswanan Precious Ramotse decides to sell her inheritance - 180 cows - and move to the capital Gaborone and open a detective agency. From a young age her father had trained her to develop her memory skills and she has a keen sense of observation. Business is slow, but Precious soon has a secretary, Grace Makutsi and fits in well with her neighbors. Slowly, clients begin to trickle in: a woman who thinks the man who claims to be her father - he had abandoned the family when she was just a young child - is actually an impostor; a woman who thinks her husband is having an affair - a view Grace enthusiastically generally supports since she thinks all men are liars and cheaters; and a factory owner who thinks an employee claiming compensation for an accident is scamming him. Her interest is also drawn to the case of a missing boy but she she must face a powerful local gangster to get the information she needs.

The agency has now been open for two months and Precious is still trying to drum up business. She decides to advertise and hires young Wellington to distribute handbills for her. Cases continue to trickle in. She investigates a Nigerian dentist, Dr. Komoti, whose receptionist claims is hurting patients. She poses as a patient herself but finds the doctor to be quite professional. She follows him and does find it odd that he makes frequent short trips by car to neighboring South Africa. There she finds double trouble. She also gets hired by someone whose dog has gone missing. The man's wife is beside herself and while Precious doesn't fancy herself a dog catcher, she decides to take him on as a client. Wellington solves the case. When she sees a crying woman reading one of her leaflets, Precious gets a case of a missing husband. The man had joined a new church group and he had never returned from services some two weeks before. The problem is all in the water.

Mma Ramotswe gets caught between a dangerous case of ivory smuggling and a feuding family when she is asked to investigate the unusual behavior of Rra Lisindi, owner of Lisindi's curio shop, and the case of a possible poisoner. Meanwhile, Mma Makutsi is entrusted with the task of solving Tlokweng Hospital's spate of mysteriously regular deaths.

Precious Ramotswe is hired by an American woman, Andrea Curtin, who is looking for her son Michael who disappeared 10 years earlier. He had come to Botswana to live on a farm commune that specialized in growing edible crops in a desert climate. From all reports, Michael had simply vanished into thin air one night and was never seen again. When his disappearance was first reported, Andrea and her husband had come to Botswana to search for him and had even hired a tracker--but to no avail. Andrea's husband died recently and she now needs to bring closure to Michael's disappearance. With Grace's quick thinking, they are able to track one of the commune residents, now a professor at a local university. As the investigation continues, however, Precious thinks they may in fact be looking for two missing people. Grace thinks the time has come for her to be promoted to assistant detective. There has also been a rash of local robberies with a strange selection of items being stolen.

Precious is hired by Mme Pekwani who thinks her husband has bought a stolen car. He says he got it from a friend but the price is much too cheap and she is concerned that he may be involved in something. When they check the vehicles serial number, they learn that it was carjacked in South Africa with a young child in the backseat. In another case, the agency is hired by Rra Badule to look into where is wife is getting the money to pay for their son's schooling and for paying her credit cards. He suspects that she is seeing another man. Precious asks Grace to follow the woman to see what is going on. The break-ins in the local shops continue with Mr. Patel the latest victim. He in turn wants Precious to find out if his 16 year-old daughter is seeing a boy. Now that she is an assistant detective, Grace goes to the beauty parlor and gets a new look.

Episode 5

Precious is still being pressed by Mr. Patel to find out exactly who his daughter is seeing. She follows the girl but doesn't see her do anything or meet anyone out of the ordinary. she thinks she has the solution however. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency has competition in the form of Cephas Buthelezi who opens the Satisfaction Guaranteed Detective Agency. He is a former CID officer with the Johannesburg police and has every intention of giving them a run for their money. Finally, Precious is hired by an old friend, Two Shots Pulani, an organizer of beauty contests who wants her to check into to the backgrounds of the contestants for his next beauty contest. Precious asks Grace to take charge of the case.

Episode 6

Precious' husband, Note Mokoti, arrives in Gaborone and she's in a bit of a panic now that she's accepted JLB's proposal of marriage. He's prepared to give her a divorce, but only at a price. With a bit of research however, she finds the solution to her problem. JLB's longtime maid Florence is upset at the news of the engagement and plots her own revenge. The offices of the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency is the third break-in in the area, but oddly only colored chalk, a cake and Grace's diploma were stolen, with the office equipment and the petty cash box left untouched. Neither Grace nor Precious is too pleased when their rival, Cephas Buthelezi, is on the case courtesy of Mr. Patel. Precious solves the case anyways.
