Hammer finds the girl's pimp but also finds out that there have been a number of young hookers have been strangled and discarded. The clue is a mysterious black limousine.

Help eventually comes from an unlikely source.

Mike also thinks one of the three women was the one who the gave the associate the criminal's location so he's not sure whom he should trust.

As a favour to his friend, Hammer decides to investigate. Coming up with the motive for the murder is easy as the man was into gambling and throwing games. But finding the actual motive and the killer is made more difficult when a key witness is also murdered and evidence destroyed.

Hammer finds out that he is carrying a load of diamonds and in his dying breath he gives Hammer one half of a $10 000 bill. The diamonds were the intended as payment for a gambling debt but the mystery deepens when the diamonds turn out to be fake. When the Hammer kills Cozy's killer in a shootout, he just needs to find the man who hired him. It turns out that the treasury department is also interested in what is happening.

Later Mike is brought to see him who tells him he didn't order the hit on the man.

He captures the killer, but during the trial Hammer's animosity nearly derails the trial. Then an army buddy of Hammer's is killed during an attempt on Hammer's life and the stakes are raised - somebody doesn't want him to testify. Hammer has to find out who is hiring the killers before he becomes the next victim.

Further investigation reveals some anomalies with his finances and that there are federal officers are who are also interested in Benny and his contacts.

It's New Year's Eve and the party is in full swing at the Lite N Easy Bar. A mysterious stranger wanders in to the bar looking for Hammer and it has everybody jumpy. However, it turns out that he is an ambassador for a new European country, Altos. In the bar, Pat Chambers relates the story of how Hammer had helped the establishment of Altos. Hammer witnessed the murder of a lawyer who was part of a push for democracy in Altos. Hammer lends a hand and looks for the killers, who are supporters of the old regime.

Firestorm

A member of a female rock band who knows Mike, goes to him and asks him to hold something for her. Later while rehearsing, she is killed by electrocution. Initially it's believed to be an accident until the equipment is checked and they realize that it's been rigged. Mike learns that there was a lot of tension between her and the other band members. The tape she gave Mike was full of new songs she was creating for the band. He finds out that some other people had grudges against her and tries to identify the person who hated her enough to kill her.

An old friend of Mike's from school asks him to attend their teacher's retirement party. Mike goes and the friend is killed before he could go. And at the party another friend of his is found dead in the car that was suppose their teacher's retirement present.
