Jeremy Bamber, who practically runs the Essex family farm 'White House' from an annex, promises at a city party to the host, his brother in law Colin Caffell, to keep an eye on his sister Sheila Caffell née Bamber, whose mental instability keeps worsening despite therapy and medication. Soon after, Colin drops his wife and their twins aged six, Nicholas and Daniel, at the Bamber farm, where he keeps his promise to tell grandparents Nevill and June the boys are to be spared further prayer, which grandma expected on their knees. The police gets a call from Jeremy that Nevill was abruptly cut off after phoning for help as Sheila went berserk, armed. After gathering a SWAT type team, the police enters and finds Jeremy's six kin fatally shot, only the dog survived. The detective in charge quickly rules Sheila committed suicide after a multiple murder, but side-tracked DS Stan Jones has his doubts, at least about a two-shot suicide.

Detective Chief Inspector Thomas 'Taff' Jones tells the brass to give the press his suicide story, but sergeant Stan Jones refuses to be side-tracked as family liaison and investigates with Mick Clark junior detective on site, despite initial forensic findings. Stan pushes on investigating with rookie Mick the farm from scratch after being shown a misleading latch by jealous in-law Ann Eaton, whose family co-owns Neville's camping site, his half now falling to Jeremy, who considers her a thief while she claims 'storing safely' heirlooms which he packs for sale, while doing the same with his killer sister's London apartment belongings, the twins things being an emotional challenge for close kin Colin. Jeremy's lover Julie gets acutely jealous of his closeness with just-arrived Kiwi travel mate Brett.

Episode 4

Taff practically suspends 'troublemaker' Stan by forcing him to take his outstanding vacation, but he and Mick find evidence that the suicide is as good as impossible, hence a murder case is to be declared. However they get scolded by ingrate Ann as it's already too late, having missed the inquest by minutes, to prevent the bodies being released and the case formally ruled without surviving suspect. To Taff's relief, his gold buddy Chief Superintendent George Harris has already cleared him by internal investigation before Stan can approach him and be implicitly scolded an incompetent rebel. Best friends Jeremy and Brett act ever more like a platonic gay couple, turning the wake into a whiskey party, which estranges jealous Julie enough to promise the police 'the truth' after the media-attended funeral.
