It is the American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky who plays the main role of the furious Medea when Cherubini's opera is staged here for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera. Medea is obsessed with revenge after being betrayed and abandoned by Jason, the father of her two children and a man for whom she has sacrificed everything. Cherubini's opera from 1797 is based on Euripides' Greek tragedy and the opera had long disappeared from operatic stages. This is until it was awakened from its sleep of a rose in a legendary production with Maria Callas at the La Scala opera house in 1953. Joyce DiDonato introduces the performance, which is directed by David McVicar and the evening's conductor is Carlo Rizzi.
