New CBI director Gale Bertram, involved in a financial scandal Dublin's office handled, gives the case absolute priority, but Patrick refuses to work on it after being saved by Red John. Lisbon tricks him by confronting him with the mourning Russo family, so he vows revenge, saying she won't see coming, while predicting the kidnapping is fake.

Patrick is criticizing the questioning technique of the detective Reece, who arrested him, holding the smoking murder weapon, having responded to a call for help from his own, dodgy brother in law Danny Ruskin. The SPD was responding to an anonymous call. Widow Concetta Wale realizes a solid golden Aphrodite statue is missing from their home safe. K-ram was a fake company, part of one of Danny's financial scams. Patrick is released in Lisbon's custody but dumps her to find and protect Danny first while the team tracks down the financial scams.

When a young woman is found strangled in the Sacramento River, Patrick Jane finds that she was drug addicted since her feet have marks of needle, and the tattoo of the Visualize on her shoulder. Soon the CBI identify the victim as Celia Jovanovich, who lived at the Visualize facility, and had rehabilitated. Lisbon. Patrick and the agents head to the cult and the lawyer Julius Coles participates of the interviews with the security team, trying to isolate the leader Bret Stiles. Soon they learn that the FBI has an undercover agent working at the Visualize trying to catch Bret Stiles. While investigating the case, Stiles heads to Jacarta to escape from the agents but meets Patrick and gives a hint of where Kristina Frye might be.

Patrick is openly uninterested, while the attorney general's office is in PR panic. TV host Karen Cross, once the top prosecutor whose high-profile convictions included Henry, films Jane sleeping, but her company paid Dahl's motel as scheduled guest, now replaced by his victim Jenny's widower Max Winter, who claims to have reached reconciliation years ago, to devote himself to fine son Jackson. Wayne must watch Grace date dashing FBI agent Craig O'Laughlin, which makes him cockily competitive. Henry's art study and cocaine dealing mate Arty Mock is found hiding in his halfway-house. Henry had an admirer, Sean Meyers's wife Betsy. Patrick accepts Cross's live TV dare, but has to revise his conclusion.

Patrick offers to help the kidnapper relieve his pain, but out of the blue his accomplice arrives and shoots him twice in his back. Soon Patrick Jane learns that she is Rachel, the daughter of a man that died in jail, and she says that he will die a painful death to avenge her father. Meanwhile, the CBI investigates the list of people who have a grudge against Patrick while Lisbon is attracted to a trap.

That's investigated by J.J. LaRoche, who focuses on Patrick, who in turn believed killer and victim were controlled by Red John. .

The local police suspects Ron Crosswhite, whom she interviewed the previous evening and probably got away with shooting his wife, city clerk Ginger (31), because officer Tom Rowley clumsily ruined the crucial video recording. While grudgingly reporting to pay a traffic fine, Jane is taken hostage by Crosswhite with other people in city hall to demand immunity and his wife's real killer being found. After the CBI director, politically influenced by Bagshaw, first gives the case to police chief Arnold Nail and then returns it go Lisbon, Rowley tries to shoot Crosswhite but only wounds another hostage. Jane gets Crosswhite to see sense and sets a trap for the double murderer.

He was meeting a buyer for a Mayan golden pendant, the only item stolen there. His transport crew is caught, also dealing in illegal arms, but Patrick believes the motive personal. Laroche's IA investigation reduced serial cop-killer Todd Johnson's torch-murder suspects to five CBI members with opportunity, including only one with a motive: agent Madeleine Hightower was the former lover of murdered CHip Jim Rance. Links between both cases are found. Patrick however sees it all as part of Red John's master plan.

Lisbon is interrupted by LaRoche and she makes a comment to him before learning that he is replacing Hightower. He immediately replaces Lisbon with Cho who reluctantly accepts the new position. Meanwhile, Lisbon and Patrick interview Newton's assistant Francine Trent and learn that he was in charge of a transplant program. His position was immediately filled by Dr. Evan Quick, who changes the policies in the hospital aiming for higher profit. Among the patients, there is the Russian mobster "Siberia" who was fast tracked while others stay on the transplant list. Patrick stays with the nurses and observes the treatment of the patients to find the killer.

Given two earlier victim thefts inter-state, the FBI suspects organ tissue trade and sends special agent Craig O'Laughlin. Tim also was treated for an alien abduction delusion in that distant field. The coroner is allowed to collaborate clumsily for a morbid reason, which Jane helps carry to the bitter end.

Meanwhile, the agents arrest Cole Ruger and Vivian Griswold, who claims that were trying to help and investigate respectively Ted Fisher that was in Iraq. Meanwhile, Fisher's girlfriend, the hippie Heather Blue, learns the true past of Fisher. When the young Iraqi Omar Hassan is arrested by the CBI agents, Patrick asks to join the suspects and Heather in the repair shop to find the killer.

Marcus's girlfriend's brother also has a record. Rigbsby calls pa's bluff he can find the killer in no time, which leads to Butch Carwin's drug ring. Patrick meanwhile searches in jail, concentrating on trustees.

Alan Dinkler (27, no record) robs Drake Vermilion's Sacramento cash office he works for $50,000 from the much richer vault, so Patrick assumes the real target were the customer names he also had. He is killed at a gas station by the remote control bomb on his chest while pleading with two uniformed cops to go away. Dinkler's roommate is not at home, probably an accidental witness. A vague message in the restroom leads to a trap location where Lisbon is fitted with a similar bomb vest. Jane finds her and makes her obey instructions, only to turn the tables on the culprit he already guessed but who is killed by LaRoche in a fishy escape attempt. The only interesting customer name links to the Hightower case and thus to Red John.

Now Hightower is found by the team but unwilling to hide out more than 48 hours longer with her kids, Patrick believes to be at an advantage as Red John ignores how close he is. After bluff-pressing LaRoche to give him the CSI mole suspects shortlist of four, to which the fat-man must be added, Patrick sets a cake-layered trap for CSI director Bertram, DA Ardiles, FBI agent Craig O'Laughlin and LaRoche. Each is 'given' given the same address, but at different floors, for Hightower's fake hideout, so where will betray who sent the hired killer, who however jumps to her death. Patrick now arranges a meeting with his top-suspect, during which he realizes he must be one floor wrong and hastily adapts. The team handles his alternative, correct suspect, while he finds himself and faces a Red John suspect, who admits to that during a lethal confrontation.
