In minutes on site in Sacramento, Jane solves the mall murder on John Rasmussen. Virgil Minelli transfers the Red John investigation from Lisbon's to Sam Bosco's team. Yet Patrick promises to help solve 'one more' ordinary case, a ransacked motel-room Jane Doe. From a group photograph he cleverly identifies Jaffe publishing secretary Monica Dunninger, who went missing with $1,000,000, abandoning husband Hollis, daughter Kessie and even son Ansel with then presumably terminal cancer. Jane sets a fictitious bait-trap.

Californian state senator Melinda Batson's recently graduated aid Kristen Marley was pushed from a Sacramento bridge, staged as a suicide. The rumor of an affair with Melinda's husband and chief of staff Elliot is denied and he has an alibi, but Jane taxes their marriage loveless. CSI concentrates on Kristen's dubious stepbrother Harlan McAdoo, who expected a false alibi from her in another crime. Patrick turns a false trail into a crucial clue. And handles Bosco's obstruction in his Red John interest.

Jane and the team find several logical suspects, but Lisbon's print in on the murder gun, so Minelli transfers the case- to Bosco.

Another suspect is found, Felicia Gutherie, whose brother was killed by the one of the gang members, wanted revenge.

His granddaughter Victoria Abner sold it to Foster, unable to pay her taxes, but calls him a thief. Construction site thief Jeb Haas says he saw Lillian on the murder night. Jane finds the ghost tricks. Rumor has it the house contains a treasure.

Patrick can only advise from a distance, being jailed on a charge of abusing CBI information in his search for Red John. While the team tries to get Sam Bosco to rescind the charge, Jane expertly manipulates his jail mates, and even arranges to get a suspect in the Hines case to get arrested and jailed.

When Bosco's and Lisbon's teams stumble in the same location, with Lisbon investigating a dead body and Bosco investigating an abducted teenager called Mia Westlake, Minelli orders that both teams should work together in the kidnapping. Soon Patrick Jane reads the coroner's report and learns that the corpse is from another teenager kidnapped three years ago. Therefore, they believe the same gang is responsible for Mia's abduction. They head to the mansion where the Westlake family lives and interview her sister Verona and her husband Duncan. Patrick plays with a baby and the nanny escorts the baby to her room. Both reams engage in the investigation and Patrick plots a plan to catch the abductor, against Bosco's will.

Lisbon summons her team to investigate a crime scene in a cemetery, where the body of a naked man was found decorated with yellow roses on his genitals. When they return to the CBI headquarters, they learn that Bosco and his agents have been shot and only Bosco has survived, but is in critical condition. Hicks is missing and becomes a suspect. They interview Bosco's team secretary Rebecca, who had brought coffee for the team; they check the security videos and find that 30 minutes are missing, indicating an inside job. Meanwhile, Jane is looking for the forensics identification of the victim in the cemetery. When the victim is identified, they find Hicks in his office with Red John's mark on the wall. When they head to Clovervill to bring the corpse and the evidence the coroner has gotten, they find that all material is gone and soon they identify the killer's identity. Who might be the murderer of the CBI agents?

Jane suspects an inside job. Ex-con Doyle Murphy is found shot in his apartment, last visited by ex-brother-in-law Donny Culpepper, to whom he owed money. The team also finds links with Ester's nephews Tom and George Doverton. Jane sets the trap.

Yet Jasper kidnaps Jane to insists he has nothing to do with the murder, nor with a later fire bomb.

Out of the blue, Cho and his girlfriend Elise Chaye are assaulted at her home by two men wearing hood and Cho decides to find the responsible forgetting that he is an agent of the law, with the support of Patrick Jane, and finds that his friend had changed indeed.

But when chef Julia St. Germain also dies poisoned, Patrick Jane plots a trap to catch the killer in a lunch party.

Janes takes offense at CDC inspector Dean Harken's arrogant rank pulling and sets an apocalyptic trap.

He had affairs with mothers of pupils. Rigsby's old San Diego PD colleague Victor Bandino, Banks's security consultant, hides something. As Jane suspected, Smithson is an alias. Scotland Yard detective Francis Slocombe confirms it's Oliver Stans, who stole Cleopatra's wedding ring from the British museum and hid in California, probably planning to sell it to top fence Louis Anglet. Jane guesses Slocombe's link with Stans and sets a dangerous trap.

Her tracks trace to a barn with the bloody corpses of hikers Michel and Janine Langham, shot up-close, presumably accidental witnesses, and tween Shoshone Leonard Railton from Storm River Reservation, an ex-con, shot from afar like Jane Doe. He was in the same marijuana-growing gang as park ranger Tisdale and his baby suffered from poisoning. Rigsby and Va Pelt are ordered to decide whether to split up or volunteer for one to be reassigned.

Patrick Jane guesses at first sight contractor Cale Sylvan is a psychopathic serial killer, whose aliases and bank account suggest he got paid for each murder. He devices entrapment which yields trophy proof. But stickler judge Hildred dismisses the case when the defense proves Jane illegally searches Cale's home, rejecting all evidence as fruit from the poisoned tree. The team keeps tracking him while Lisbon is suspended. Several surprise crimes follow, including Sylvan's murder, presumably ordered by his client in the Flower case.

Missing from his desk is the list of accompanying planned lay-offs. Concerned journalist Heather Evans' bloody shoes betray she stole the folder, and admits Xander's headstrong brother Ed tipped her off. The paper was investigating Bret Stiles' cult Visualise. Bret's deputy Steven Wench reveals that widow Sadie, the TV branch manager, was an adulteress fearing her prenuptial. Her secretary Elizabeth Stanfeld, a Visualize member, calls a bomb threat at the Harrington home. Jane's insight saves Lisbon and Sadie's daughter Ella.

After his widow reports the house ransacked, it appears the finger was the key to a safe, but the robber failed to realize the treasure was a locker-room key, hidden in a cheap chess piece. It was a universal code hacker, ordered by Noah's partner, Tolman Bunting, from Noah, a Dutchman and closed psych ward patient Oliver McDaniel, who escapes once told about the key.

Patrick soon realizes Hector and his widow Ilsa Engels reproached each-others affairs, he perhaps with the mysterious Carmen whose call lured him to the murder place. Patrick is most skeptic about collaborating with 'psychoic analyst' Kristina Frye, whom sheriff Andy Burnside enlisted.

Asian student Marley Sparrow's bloody murder in theatrical Red John style is posted on the Internet before the corps is found, by water like 'medium' Kristina Frye predicted. Jane objects to her being involved and claims it's a copy-cat. Marley was going steady with a man she described to her friends, who never saw him, as cop Grady Shipp. Jane remembers that's the name of an executed cannibalistic serial killer who was in Lompoc jail with Orval Tanner, a friend of Red John. After Kristina makes a TV appeal for Red John to seek help, Jane gets CBI to protect her full-time. "Shipp's" address proves the layer of a camera-obsessed young man. Marley's professor supervising the film club also taught a class mentioning red John the previous semester. The only other student involved in both like Marley, acting talent Wesley Blankfein, went missing. At lake Tahoe, Jaqueline Sandoval, who interviewed Frye, is killed also in Red John style, this time convincing Patrick. Kristina disappears on Van Pelt's watch. Patrick works his deductive magic from a single photograph, only to land in a three way-trap.
