Pilot

The story Lee is working on is how Akron, an old money stereotypically "white" development company, got a hold of a Martin Luther King signed church pamphlet, which Lee believes should be in the public realm, specifically with the residents of the neighborhood where the church used to exist. But his investigation veers more toward why they are buying up large swaths of seemingly worthless black owned property in North Tulsa. In his visit to speak to the evasive Akron people, he nonetheless walks away from the meeting with something substantial. But it is two previous articles that come back to bite him in different ways. One is the exposé on the corruption within the Washberg family, its relevance in that Donald Washberg is running for governor. The other is the skinhead Tulsa Bootboys' torching of a synagogue. The former takes on different relevance when Dale Washberg, Donald's brother who is considered the black sheep of the family and who was only peripherally referenced in the article, is found dead by an apparent suicide in his library. Lee is already suspicious about the nature of the death as Dale no longer being in the picture will make it easier for the rest of the Washbergs to conduct their business unimpeded. But in looking for books to buy at Dale's estate sale, Lee believes he's stumbled onto the tip of the iceberg that the death was not suicide and that the Bootboys are also involved in the corrupt activity of the Washbergs.

The Devil's Mama

Coming out of his latest encounter with Blackie and Berta a little worse for wear, Lee nonetheless comes out of it with a minor windfall, enough to cover some debts plus fund other immediate projects. Those projects, some which require no money, include getting rid of Blackie and Berta's car as quietly and permanently as possible, trying to find out exactly who Marty is, and trying to find out more about Blackie and Berta and their tie to Allen. He thinks he may find some answers at Dale's memorial, but he gets one answer he doesn't expect.

Dinosaur Memories

Lee learns indirectly that Ray did not buy the books from the estate sale, and was probably not going to tell him in pocketing the money. Lee eventually learns the books were bought by a rival antique collector named Catalina Estragon, who has a reputation for being mean. Lee, Francis and Ray go on a mission to get the books from Catalina. In needing a plan, the three eventually go on their separate ways, each going through a different adventure and success in retrieving the books. Meanwhile, Douglas has a proposition for Marty, who in turn comes to the attention of Allen.

Short on Cowboys

Lee and Francis try to decipher the retrieved notes hidden in what was Dale's collection of Jim Thompson mystery novels, but it's not as easy to understand what Dale was trying to convey in actually writing them as Lee or Francis would like. In learning that Donald is suing Hartland over Lee's story, Lee feels the need to confront an adversary on the Dale issue. They will both find that they have more in common than on first glance, and that they need each other at this moment in time as each still has his or her motive in spending time together. Donald tries to convince Marty to approach Betty Jo about his offer again, which he needs for his political survival, despite she previously emphatically turning it down. The viewer learns of the genesis of Allen and Blackie's connection. And Samantha drops what Lee considers a bombshell on him.
Episode 5
This Land?

Lee receives an unexpected visit from his former business partner, Wendell, it being unexpected solely in Lee forgetting about what has become their annual ritual this day. The ritual somewhat takes a back seat as in their differences that arguably led to the strain in their professional and personal relationship, Wendell bets Lee that he can discover details that Lee has so far been unable to discover concerning information provided to him from Betty Jo that may be a factor in Dale's death. The differences between Lee and Wendell play into what happens in their day at every step. Meanwhile, Marty is on a first date, which ends up having a third wheel. And Donald confronts a scared Betty Jo about who he saw coming out of the house.
Episode 6
Old Indian Trick

Donald has two planned encounters, the first which he is able to control, with the second not quite what he was expecting. Conversely, Lee has two unexpected encounters, neither which he is able to control. But from one of them, he, against the strong advice not to do anything, decides to follow-up to discover more information surrounding Dale's death. Due to the situation, he chooses yet another wing person, this time it being Deidra, who does it for a price. Meanwhile, Betty Jo, fearing for her safety, has gone into hiding, her fear a little less in reality than she lets on.
Episode 7
Tulsa Turnaround

In discovering the existence of Dale's handwritten will, Lee goes on a mission to help Arthur and Chutto in seeing what rights they have in the validity of such a will. In the process, Lee forgets an important meeting, which he may regret when he finally remembers. He also discovers that he told one person too many about the will, it with tragic consequences. In the land deal, one more person may regret getting into bed with Onewell.
Episode 8
The Sensitive Kind

Lee is able to make it out of the standoff with the armed men at the Onewell compound, but not without some collateral damage. He will discover in his self-described role as a truthstorian that there are other issues beyond the truth in what those he is purporting to help actually want which may be counter to what telling of the truth may accomplish. But as the truth is still the crux of what he wants, he believes the only way to discover it with regard to Dale's death is to confront both Donald and Betty Jo with what he knows, which he is able to do with the help of someone who has always been an ally despite being associated to someone considered an adversary. Meanwhile, Lee moves into a new phase in his relationships both with Francis and Samantha.
