With Warner Bros. and Fox churning out all the blockbuster hits, Sylver Studios finds itself in jeopardy of Hollywood extinction. Desperate for a signature picture, new studio head Leo Sylver finds a gem in THIS LAND OF OURS, a story about the Jewish experience in Germany. For the big-budget film, Sylver Studios "borrows" Rachel Lipton, a sassy Warner Bros. contracted actress that had been suspended from the studio by Jack Warner himself. All seems in order until Leo is threatened by the Los Angeles German consul to pull the plug on the film's distribution in Germany. Torn between staying true to his heritage and his good business sense, Leo must make a difficult moral decision.

There's a new writer in town and she's stormed into Hollywood with a vengeance. Fast-talking, high-brow New Yorker Libby Wilson has been recruited by Sylver Studios to inject some life back into the slumping studio. She takes on the studio's next high-profile project by taking Charlie under her wing. However, when her sights on Charlie stray from the writers room to the bedroom, Charlie falls into her web of manipulation and becomes her boy-toy. On the backlot, studio publicist Jack Sweeney turns to drastically unethical measures to make an actor out of Victor Manuel De Alonso Ortiz, and turn him into Victor Mansfield, the star. Meanwhile, overnight sensation June Parker is back on the scene after recognizing playboy Roland White's two-timing ways.

Guileless New York writer Libby continues her torrid relationship with Charlie, who has fallen in love with her as they work on the new Sylver Studios production. When Libby takes Charlie to a Hollywood Hills party, raided by the police, he receives a shocking revelation: she's married. Meanwhile, studio head Leo Sylver needs a male lead for a new picture, and handsome Victor gets a new name and a chance to be a star- aided by frequent trips to the studio infirmary for more "back treatment." But, at the press conference announcing the studio's new leading man, Victor discovers that Sweeney has changed more than just his name.

New Sylver Screen Studios star Victor Mansfield's addiction is discovered by costume designer Fabian, who passes the potentially disastrous news along to studio head Leo Sylver. Leo orders Sweeney to take care of the problem before it becomes public knowledge. In the meantime, Charlie finds himself the victim of another double-cross when the object of his affections, Libby, schemes to cut him out of a screen credit for the new film, "Devil May Care."

Out on a wild ride with Victor Mansfield, Rachel's car is wrecked, sending the beloved leading lady through the windshield and into a coma. Leo and Sweeney, anxious to protect their investment in the up-and-coming leading man, pay off everyone, from the cops, to the hospital staff, to gossip columnist Letitia Devine, to keep it quiet. Rachel's friends back on the lot find their own ways to cope with the tragedy. However, Victor's guilt is inconsolable. Unscathed by the accident, he defies studio orders to stay away from the hospital, and sneaks into Rachel's room, where he's spotted by her bedside. A quick call to journalist Milton Maxwell and the studio's cover story is blown- along with Victor's career.

Victor finally makes peace with himself over the accident, but Rachel, fully recovered, can't make peace with the sizable scar on her face when she sees the dailies from the shooting of her new film. In the meantime, Nebraska Johnston decides to fight tooth and nail for her own stalled career. A classically trained African American actress, who's fed up with playing maids and mammies, Johnston issues an ultimatum to studio head Leo Sylver and appears to triumph- until a representative of the Hays office appears on the scene.

June accepts a date with costar Colin Rhome, unaware that he's her father. Victor becomes annoyed by Colin's unprofessionalism. Charlie threatens to quit, so Leo fires him. Norma cons Fabian into designing a dress for a movie premiere.

After Colin drops dead, Mary tells June that he was her father. Fabian steals Colin's corpse so a distraught June can spend time with the dad she never knew. Meanwhile, Rachel agrees to extend her contract if Leo rehires Charlie.

To quell gay rumors, Danny Matthews proposes to Rachel. Fabian confesses his bisexuality to Mary and Leo. Jack blackmails Norma to sniff out someone from a pesky morality group.

Mobster Eddie Moran causes issues at the studio and sweeps Norma off her feet, so Mary exposes him. Meanwhile, Charlie is forced to revise his script when Stan Lunquist, a member of the Legion of Decency, shows up on the set.

A biopic about Oscar Wilde is a disaster. Victor is unaware he's portraying a gay man, Charlie is forced to rewrite Wilde's sexuality, Fabian gets his ex a role in the movie, and Norma is assaulted by the director, who's been dating Mary.

When Fabian's niece Peggy visits, she's corrupted by Norma, who finagles the girl a role in a movie. Meanwhile, Rachel finds herself dating both playful Victor and uptight Charlie.

Letitia betrays Mary by listening in and reporting the details of her private telephone conversation. Rachel quits a film and is replaced by Norma, who is miscast and drives Charlie crazy with rewrites. Victor tries to get Fabian in shape.
