Toby and Michell investigate the abduction of an African teenager whose driver/bodyguard, Kwesi, was shot during the altercation. The case is nuanced and far-reaching because the victim, Ibrahim Ayim, is the son of Abassi Ayim, a deposed Liberian politician accused of defrauding his country of millions and committing a slew of atrocities. Toby has trouble getting solid insights since Abassi is cold and calculating and his bodyguard, Rafiq, keeps him at bay. The IIB team finds a promising lead with Dennis Harwell, an outspoken political blogger whose agenda is to ruin Abassi for his litany of crimes. Harwell's motive is clearly personal, but so are the motives of the other suspects: Ibrahim's estranged mother (Reta), Habisi, who runs a Liberian social club, and even potentially Rafiq. When the kidnappers send Ibrahim's severed finger to prove the temerity of their ten million dollar ransom demand, Michelle puts the pressure on Toby to make sense of the barrage of violent images he sees.

At a swanky hotel bar, Michelle intercepts Luke "Manny" Manson, a renowned art thief she's been pursing for years. His return to Toronto can only mean he's involved in an upcoming heist and she plans to use his capture to the IIB's advantage - to smash a huge international theft ring. Though he utters some serious threats, she manages to arrest him without incident. Toby and Oz are checking out of the EMS station for the day. Oz is amped to be assigned acting supervisor but quickly finds himself in over his head after a patient accuses the paramedics of theft. With Klein's consent and Dev's assistance, Michelle goes undercover as a security specialist for Manny's crew, but since it's a dangerous undertaking and she won't be wearing a wire, she enlists Toby's telepathy for protection.

At the hospital, Oz and Elyse are immersed in their new flirtation game, as Toby arrives to meet Oz to go watch hockey. Oz quietly admits to Toby that he's ready to move on, and possibly with Elyse, when Sandy surprises him. She's back early from Africa and can't wait to catch up. At a swanky dinner, a small group of pharmaceutical executives celebrate a record-breaking year while outside irate protesters assemble. CEO Jeffrey Brandt toasts their success, but the self-congratulatory speech is hijacked by Harold Kalb - a protester disguised as a waiter. Kalb disrupts the proceedings in a rage. As Brandt calls for security, he suddenly collapses followed in succession by other guests. With Brandt now dead, and five others very ill, Toby, Michelle and Klein discover additional casualties. Apparently, the drug they were lauding was responsible for at least four patient's deaths, and with the pharma victims intentionally poisoned, it appears vengeance is the motive.

After criminal mastermind Magnus Elphrenson pulls off an elaborate escape from prison, Michelle, Toby and the other IIB members are immediately on the case. Given the difficulty of staying ahead of the nefarious genius, who is rumoured to have a cache of millions, time is extremely limited. With Gregory Harrow, the man who raped and murdered his daughter, now dead, staying one step ahead of Magnus' plans is a challenge. Even Toby struggles for clarity on the man's thoughts. When Magnus leaves an ominous note for Michelle stating that he's planning vengeance, the team must battle against a possible conspiracy to figure out the target of his wrath.
