1983. Nick Guest comes to London to spend the summer house-sitting for his college friend's family, the Feddens, and to research his thesis on Henry James. He makes friends with the daughter of the house, Catherine, and falls in love with Leo, a black man. The Feddens ask Nick to live with them, and he is introduced to their high-society lives of parties and politics.

1986. Nick still lives with the Feddens. He's having an affair with Wani Ouradi, a young Middle-Eastern man with whom he's publishing a magazine. Nick visits his parents in Barwick, which is also Gerald Fedden's constituency for parliament, and joins the Feddens at their country house in France. For the finale, Margaret Thatcher attends a party at the Feddens' house, and she and Nick are the highlight of the evening.
Episode 3

1987. Gerald Fedden wins re-election, to his daughter Catherine's disappointment. Nick learns that Leo has died from AIDS. Wani is also infected. He and Nick meet with film producers to discuss their idea of a Henry James adaptation. Scandal breaks as newspapers detail Gerald Fedden's financial misconduct and extramarital affairs, as well as Nick's gay lifestyle, based on Catherine's revelations. For Nick, an era seems to have come to an end.
