Episode 1

The Hole Up

The driver is killed during the robbery of a Wells Fargo shipment by Blackie Saunders who also threatened a woman and boy if they identify him. A Wells Fargo representative comes to Earp to ask him to go undercover into Brown's Hole which is a known outlaw hangout. Mayor Kelley says they can't afford to lose Earp but Earp decides to go anyway. He allows himself to be taken captive by the outlaws telling them he is Tim Hardwick wanted for the crime Blackie committed with a wanted poster to back up his story. The outlaws find it but warn him to leave as they don't want a conflict there between him and Blackie who they assume he wants to take to clear his name. Earp decides to visit Shotgun Gibbs who has a place near the outlaw hangout but brokers no visitors of any kind as he is a loner. He challenges Earp to fight first with fists and then guns but finds Earp too much for him in both cases. He despises what Blackie did so he agrees to help Earp by letting him stay. When Blackie returns and is told about Hardwick, he and the cook Skittles go after Hardwick but they find more than they bargained for.

The Peacemaker

Earp is returning with his prisoner Blackie Saunders and friend Shotgun Gibbs. Realizing there are problems in Dodge City he leaves Blackie under the guard of Mr. Cousin. Shotgun wants to return to his home in Brown's Hole. Earp goes to a nearby Santa Fe rail spur to find a hand car to return to Dodge City faster. Gibbs leaves for Utah but his mule Roscoe heads to Dodge City which Gibbs allows. In Dodge City Curly Bill Brocius and John Ringgold lead a gang of outlaws against Mayor Kelley and Judge Tobin holed up in the jail after they disarmed the citizens. They demand Kelley fire Earp in writing and pay them $20,000 from the bank as "insurance" against them burning the town. Kelley decides to give in but revolts when they tell him to say Earp is crooked and a liar in writing. Earp makes it to the Dodge City depot where he is cornered by the gang but he soon finds Gibbs and his shotgun have come to his aid. In the end Gibbs surprises the outlaws and Earp with a special hanging in return for being the new chief deputy.

The Bounty Killer

A string of ambush murders in the Robber's Roost area forces Col. Benteen at Fort Lewis, Colorado to ask Earp for help. With Apaches threatening, he can't afford the time or men to investigate. He has received a letter from Elzie Rash asking for help so Earp starts there. After his wife reads a letter of introduction from Benteen, Rash trusts Earp. Earp noticed a man eying the Rash ranch when he arrived so he and Elzie leave to track him. After a few shots are traded, Elzie and his horse are slightly wounded. He takes the horses back for fresh ones and treatment while Earp continues on foot. They find another victim in his house and Earp meets the posse on the man's trail made up of outlaw ranchers. Earp has them keep the killer out of the lowlands while he and Elzie catch up and trade shoots again with the killer. Earp and the killer are both wounded but the killer leaves behind his saddle bags and a book with a hint as to who hired him. Earp decides to visit the rancher suspected named Moyer who ignores Earp. A trap set by Mrs. Rush kills the actual killer. Earp now faces the question of whether the outlaw posse will follow his orders or do things their way.

Caught by a Whisker

The outlaw half-brothers Matt and Clint Dunbar decide to rob the Dodge City State national Bank alone rather than with their gang. They have robbed several banks including one in Wichita but Earp has no good description of them. There has already been multiple unsuccessful attempts to rob the bank so the bank installs an electric bell that the clerks can trip to sound an alarm the law and others can hear. Clint Dunbar arrives in Dodge City posing as a carpet and cloth drummer. Matt sporting a long beard robs the bank threatening the president with a bottle of nitroglycerin. He stashes the money in a sample case in the back of Clint's wagon but Deputy Gibbs stops Clint from leaving town. He is forced to return to the stable where he hides the money in a feed bin. Matt returns to Clint's hotel room where he shaves his beard to change his appearance. Clint was asked to stay at the stable but his leaving puts Earp on alert about him and the other man to leave a horse there who was the robber. Gibbs stakes out the stable catching Matt trying to retrieve the money. Clint then hatches a plan to free Matt forcing Earp to match wits with him.

The Mysterious Cowhand

Earp's cousin Nate has been murdered by stabbing putting Earp in a frenzied mood. He has learned the man who did it was riding a Circle Diamond outfit horse and the outfit is now in nearby Oklahoma driving a herd. Against Gibbs wishes, Earp decides to go alone undercover as a drifting cowboy from Alabama to join the outfit. He finds a couple of Circle Diamond hands ahead of the herd in a gunfight with freighters. He is able to settle their differences leading to a potential offer of work with the Circle Diamond outfit. The trail boss Tim Corkle puts him to work with the hothead cook. A near knifing by the cook leads to Corkle putting Earp to work with three men lead by Jumbo riding tail end Charlie or drag on the herd. Earp soon learns Jumbo has a knife like the one used to kill Nate but he claims to have won it in a poker game from someone. When Jumbo is wounded by Corkle, Earp learns Jumbo knows who he is and that he suspects Corkle and his confederates Red and Turk are also outlaws. Earp decides to use Red and Turk to put pressure on Corkle as well as each other to find the truth.

The Gatling Gun

A group of Nez Perce Indians who left their Idaho reservation steal a Gatling gun and 10,000 rounds of ammo from the Army. General Sherman sends Captain Stewart to ask Earp to talk to Chief Joseph about the return of the gun. Earp sees little chance of success after discussing it with Mr. Cousin but the two leave to try. After being warned about a group of land grabbers who call themselves a militia from Idaho at an Army fort, the two find themselves taken captive by them. While the men argue over their future, Chief Joseph and his men rescue the two from the militia. Earp is brutally honest with Chief Joseph about the options open to the Nez Perce. Chief Joseph agrees to surrender the gun but on the way to the fort they encounter the militia. Earp doesn't trust them with good reason leading to a treacherous trip back to the fort.

Cattle Thieves

The Cattlemen's Association enacted a law making cattle rustling a felony. Small time rustler's are often lynched while most of the big ranchers get a pass. Earp and Judge Tobin think the law is unfair and applied unequally but when a group of five ranchers file a complaint against fellow rancher Rep Cantwell Earp is forced to arrest Rep. Rep and Mel Doniher have both courted Widow Morrison with Rep winning the contest adding fuel to the fire. Mayor Kelley is afraid of a major fight between the outfits but Earp and Judge Tobin won't back down. Earp asks Mrs. Morrison to help but she tells Earp it is too late as the lines are drawn but everyone is guilty including her and Shotgun Gibbs who rustled his mule Roscoe which Gibbs has told Earp. Earp and the deputies clamp down on the violence but Mrs. Morrison has Rance steal Roscoe. She threatens Gibbs with skinning the mule to prove an altered brand. Gibbs followed by Earp rides to her ranch where the situation comes to a head.

Remittance Man

Jonathan Milton is a "remittance man" from England. His family wants nothing to do with him but his inheritance guarantees he receives a monthly stipend. He has been turning it over to Henry Dart for room and board with the leftover funds used by him for liquor. Recently his demeanor has changed to where he is constantly drunk. Doris Burns who works for Dart has become close friends with Milton but even she is worried about his changing demeanor. He asks Dart for use of his pistol which Dart grudgingly hands over. He tries to gun gambler George Cantwell but Earp breaks it up. The drunk Milton lets slip he needs $500 to pay Cantwell but Milton does not gamble. Later Earp is called by by Dart and Nathaniel "Cooker" Hutchinson about $500 stolen from Cooker by Doris who admits doing it. Earp arrests her as the money is gone - presumably to Cantwell - as Cooker refuses to relent on charges. Are talking to Doris Earp is able to divine why Milton needed the money. A sober Milton wants to help but it is up to Earp to devise a solution to the situation.

King of the Frontier

Earp's friend Ned Buntline has written a new book titled King of the Frontier featuring Earp being the best in a shootout and at various cowboy activities. Buntline has come west to experience a cattle drive. He is the guest of Miles Breck of the Lazy Q outfit which has reached Dodge City. Breck bets Buntline that Earp can't beat his best men in each activity specified in the book. The bet is $10,000 and Buntline must pay up if Earp declines to participate. Earp is not happy about it but realizes if he declines he will be the butt of every cowboy's joke. Buntline assumes the bet relates only to the cowboy activities but Breck intends for it to include a shootout at 100 yards with Earp using his Buntline versus a man with a Winchester. A miniature rodeo is created with Earp against Breck's best man in four events. When Buntline realizes Breck wants the shootout, he tries to call off the bet but Shotgun intervenes saying he wants to talk to Earp who adds one request.

Truth About Gunfighting

The owner of the Bar J ranch is relatively new to the west and the creed the men live by there. He has a daughter who is in love with one of his hands Mitch Hallam who he has offered the job of foreman but Mitch is refusing to take the job until he can prove he has earned it out right. He leaves for Dodge City where he finds himself in a gunfight over a poker game and in jail for wearing a gun. The daughter Janey Travis pays his fine after accusing Earp of being a gunfighter that Mitch wants to emulate. Earp takes an interest in Mitch adding him as a deputy. Earp learns another hand named Lanigan has been pushing Mitch into gunfights. Eventually Mitch reveals to everyone he thinks Lanigan and other hands have been stealing cattle from Travis. Earp concocts a plan to ease the situation but it doesn't placate Lanigan and friends putting Mitch in a situation Janey and her dad don't understand.

Frontier Woman

The stage driver reports to Earp that he passed a group of freighters 30 miles outside of Dodge City who said renegades had attacked a wagon but the men were acting strange. Earp rides alone to the site where he finds the freighters led by Jed Carney preparing to leave and two graves. Jed tells Earp that the Hildreth couple was following them and attacked by renegades when they fell behind. Earp lets them leave while he investigates. He finds a picture of the couple plus their adult daughter. Looking for tracks he finds a set belonging to a woman leading into the rocks and caves. He finds Martha Hildreth with a butcher knife in shock. Realizing Earp is tracking her, Carney and his men come after them trapping them in a cave. Earp takes a wounded Carney prisoner along with a couple of his wounded men. The rest leave due to Earp's accurate shooting. Earp takes his three prisoners to the graves where he has them disinter the bodies. He forces them to turn over the wagon to which he ties the three men. Martha takes Earp's horse but returns when she sees the rest of the gang. Earp with a shock ridden Martha who finally tells Earp what happened must hold off the gang until help arrives.

Santa Fe War

A war has broken out in Finney County between the Finney gang and the homesteaders who are organized as the Grangers. The Finney organization has faked land deeds to the land owned by the Grangers. Grangers have been killed by ambush so they have taken to hanging Finney members at Santa Fe water stops. Dan Christy of the Santa Fe asks Earp to investigate the situation as the railroad can't take sides. Earp agrees to go if the railroad supplies a posse if he needs one and the Army is called in as backup. Earp rides into Garden City where Sheriff Johnson believes Earp is there to help the Finneys. He soon learns that Earp is there to enforce the law as Earp leaves town with the Grangers led by Sam 'Deacon' Burns. Burns against the wishes of the Grangers agrees to give Earp time to investigate. Earp returns to Garden City where he steals the book of land deeds from the Sheriff. The Finneys led by Judge Prentiss and Sheriff Johnson decide to attack the Burns farm. The Grangers are laying in wait for the Finneys who try to set the buildings on fire. An unwilling Earp soon finds himself in the midst of massive and explosive shootout he has little control over.

Plague Carrier

While returning to Dodge City on the stage Earp meets a very quiet and private man who says he is going west but gives no reason. When the stage causes a wagon to overturn and injure Lem and Martha Evans, the man Dr. Carl McDowell treats them. At Dodge City Dr. McCarty approves of his work. He and Earp suggest McDowell open a practice in Dodge City as people are dying due to a lack of care. Earp especially and McCarty find McDowell curious and unwilling to answer certain questions. Earp learns he had no practice in Cincinnati as claimed and McCarty catches him lying about his medical school. Although there are plenty of unlicensed doctors in the west, Earp is concerned Dr. McDowell will kill someone so he confronts Dr. McDowell. McCarty wants him to stay but thinks he can pass the state exam for a license. Smallpox has hit Wichita which worries Dr. McCarty. With Dr. McCarty gone, Lem asks a reluctant Dr. McDowell to treat his sick wife. News learned by Dr. McCarty has him and Earp worried Dr. McDowell may be a carrier.

Kill the Editor

Mayor Kelley who is part owner of the Globe Times newspaper in Dodge City has hired Jim Murdoch to take over as editor. Jim is a cousin of Marsh Murdock who ran the paper in Wichita. The residents of Dodge City are unhappy with the previous editor especially over a story written by Cal McDavid about Sally Bascom and her dance hall. Earp tells Murdock he thinks the story was accurate but Earp has no proof that Sally ran a crooked establishment, yet. That night while trying to wash up, McDavid breaks into Earp's unlocked room to steal his Buntline pistol. McDavid confronts Sally in her living quarters where he shoots her and leaves the Buntline beside the body to frame Earp. He returns to the paper to write the story. Earp decides to play along with the frame-up hoping McDavid makes a mistake. McDavid has several witnesses lined up implicating Earp. Disliking Earp's decisions, Gibbs resigns to work with the returning Doc Holliday to clear Earp but their actions may do more harm than good.

Little Brother

Morgan Earp is on his way to Dodge City to visit his brother Wyatt when the stage is held up. When the mask on one of the bandits slips down, Morgan recognizes him as Smiley Dunlap who is a friend of Doc Holliday. At Dodge City Morgan heads to see Doc first to tell him about Smiley. Doc asks Morgan to keep the fact from Wyatt to which Morgan agrees. Doc quizzes a couple of men who promise to help find Smiley. When the two men are gunned down in the street, Doc decides to take Morgan with him to find Smiley who he believes to be in trouble with the Greg Norton gang. Kate Holliday overhears Doc and Morgan talking and relays the story to Wyatt. Wyatt takes a posse to track Doc and Morgan. Doc ultimately learns Smiley and his wife are with the Norton gang. Smiley has crossed Norton so he wants revenge. Wyatt and his group catch up with everyone only to find Doc and Morgan prisoners along with Smiley and his wife. Wyatt must free them but he doesn't want Morgan to know he was involved.

The Reformation of Doc Holliday

Doc Holliday's illness is worse with Dr. McCarty saying he can do more unless Doc changes his habits. Frustrated Kate tells Doc she is leaving as she can't handle his lifestyle anymore. Earp convinces Doc he needs to reform to keep Kate as they need each other. Doc decides to try Earp's idea by swearing off gambling, liquor, and carrying a gun. The first two may extend Doc's life but the last one may shorten it given his enemies. Doc confronts Dan Leving in Doc's saloon when Leving tries to sell bad land to a young Ralph Stebbins and his wife Marci. When Leving confronts the unarmed Doc, Earp steps in to help. Doc takes Ralph and Marci under his wing. Kate packing to leave is surprised but pleased at the report from the Stebbins about Doc. However, Earp keeps having to protect Doc from several enemies including Leving while Judge Tobin and Mayor Kelley don't believe Doc has changed. Kate soon realizes Doc is miserable under the new conditions plus his life is in danger forcing a change in both Doc and Kate as they help the Stebbins.

A Good Man

Saloon owner Ganly is upset when Rev. Oliver Tittle hangs a poster on his saloon announcing his plans to preach against the sins of gambling and the devil. Earp tells Tittle he must get permission to post his posters and asks him to move to a different location. Tittle admits he is not an ordained preacher but his work is honest. He gathers a crowd in front of Ganly's saloon with Ganly taunting him and Earp forced to break up the gathering due to Ganly's veiled threat to tar and feather Tittle. Tittle returns later to break up a game in the saloon and preach. A barfly asks Ganly to let him preach and takes a collection for Tittle. Tittle turns the money over to Earp but a sign comes to Tittle telling him to take the money and increase it by playing poker. Earp believes it is a fool's errand but turns the money over to Tittle who he believes is a gambler by trade. A high stakes poker game ensues with Tittle trying to break the devil, Ganly. Tittle has success but not in the expected manner.

Death for a Stolen Horse

In Kansas the legal penalty for horse stealing is still hanging as stealing a man's horse was often the same as sentencing him to death in the west. Pete Hendell and his Bar-W men have accused Joe Riva of stealing three of their horses. As they prepare to lynch Riva, Earp and Doc Holliday stop them with Earp taking Riva into custody. Doc, a close friend of Riva, realizes it will take a special effort to free Riva. Earp who believes Riva is innocent tries to find proof he is innocent by asking Riva's daughter Helen for any bill of sales but she resorts to faking them while Shotgun finds a few character witnesses. Earp knows Doc is up to a trick but fears it will hurt Riva. Doc has Helen have Riva's men steal 20 horses and pays horse trader B. H. Creevy to sell the horses the next day on consignment. Earp then learns Doc's plan which ensnares Pete Hendell but there is still fallout putting Earp in the middle.

Last Stand at Smoky Hill

Bat Masterson returns to Dodge City with friends of him and Earp who are old time buffalo hunters. They have heard thousands or more buffalo have returned to Kansas. Earp doesn't believe it and refuses to join the group who he tries to dissuade from continuing the hunt. After they leave, Earp receives a message from the railroad that Apaches have left their reservation to hunt buffalo. Earp has Shotgun bring in Mr. cousin to help Earp track down Bat's group to warn them about the Apache. The Apache led by the renegade Horace Collins kills a small squad of soldiers. They spot Bat's group and decide to wipe them out. Earp and Mr. Cousin using a shortcut get ahead of Bat's group who meets up with them at an abandoned ranch. A gunfight ensues between the hunting group and the Apaches who face some disagreement among themselves. It is a no win situation for both sides. Earp and Bat try talking but find themselves prisoners and everyone soon learns the source of the rumor about the buffalo.

The Muleskinner

Many of the people in the old west were uneducated and often quick to lash out at perceived injustices in rough ways. Earp's friend from Wichita Sam McGuffin stops to visit with Earp. Sam is an old mule skinner hauling a load of freight to a nearby location and headed to Arizona along with helper Lige Fuller. While in Earp's office Sam hears his lead mule and rushes outside to find Lige stealing a packet and leaving. Sam in a flash of anger starts using a bull whip on Lige but is stopped by Earp. After Lige returns the packet, he is sent on his way. After dining with Sam, Earp returns Sam to his camp. They find Sam's lead mule missing but Lige appears saying he "found" the mule and will give his location for the packet. Sam more interested in his lead mule turns over the packet agreeing to let Lige leave on the evening train. Earp and Sam find the missing mule where Lige said he would be - dead. Earp and Sam return to Dodge City to catch Lige who didn't expect them to find the mule so quickly. Sam's anger is raging pitting him against Earp who wants to arrest Lige. Retribution occurs but not as expected.

Earp Ain't Even Wearing Guns

Miss Amy Landreth precedes her father's Texas Circle Star outfit to Dodge City. Originally from Mississippi where her mother died during the Civil War, she has no use for Kansas and Yankees such as Earp. Earp is forced to intercede on behalf of the Dodge House owner Mr. Cromwell when she hires Lafe Harin to shoot Mr. Cromwell who suggested she might wish to move to another hotel. When the Circle Star outfit arrives, they start shooting up the town forcing Earp to arrest them. Amy points out that the Abilene Marshal Smith controlled his town without guns. Earp makes an agreement with Major Landreth that he and Shotgun will forgo their guns if the Circle Star does as well. Both sides stick to the agreement but the Circle Star men still decide to take on Earp and Shotgun with fists. When the results don't suit Amy, she takes steps on her own to bring down Earp for reasons known to her and Earp.

Bat Jumps the Reservation

Bat Masterson has been roaming through Texas and the Black Hills enjoying life. Along with luck at gambling he has met Cora Warrous who he plans to wed and her brother Al. Al claims to be a reformed outlaw who is wanted in Missouri. Bat has decided to build a ranch with them in Wyoming. They purchase 500 head of cattle at Dodge City to take with them. Shotgun's sleuthing turns up that Al is headed for Hole in the Wall Wyoming. Earp decides to not press Bat or Al on the cattle hoping Al is going straight. When he learns the group has killed a couple of lawmen, Earp leaves alone to catch Al and retrieve Bat. He arrives at Sally's Store in the wilderness near the outlaws. He lays a trap there for the group as Bat learns about the real Cora who Earp teaches a severe lesson.

The Truth About Rawhide Geraghty

Rawhide Geraghty won't tell Mrs. Geraghty why he is suddenly afraid to make his run as stagecoach driver to Amarillo, Texas so she asks Earp to talk to him. After being brushed off by Rawhide, Earp talks to the stage line officials Brooks and Denman. They inform Earp this is to be Rawhide's last run with a big retirement party and pension planned in Amarillo. Realizing Rawhide thinks he won't survive the last run as road agents and Apaches are expected to attack, Earp tells Rawhide he was to ride shotgun with Rawhide but he is too scared. Rawhide won't let Earp back out forcing Earp to go with him while agreeing to drive the stage himself. Earp along with Brooks and Denman agree there is significant danger so they implement several preventative measures including adding armor to the stage and staging relief horses. The group does face road agents and Apaches as Earp tries to give the impression Rawhide is getting them through safely.

She Almost Married Wyatt

Mr. Cousin brings an exhausted girl he found to Dodge City. After taking her to Dr. McCarty who says she needs rest, she is turned over to Mrs. Bates who runs the Traveler's Society to help people. The girl refuses to tell Mrs. Bates who she is or where she is from. However, she is willing to talk to Earp alone although she has little trust in men. She is Cathy Prentice who was adopted by Mom Prentice and lives with her and her sons at Prentice Tavern which is a saloon and hotel at a remote site. Mom has promised her son Todd that Cathy will marry him. Earp investigates the place deciding it is unfit for Cathy and the family is abusive. Mrs. Bates and Mayor Kelley are more worried about the society and city being sued by her family. Earp takes her away from Mrs. Bates who wants her returned to the family while he tries to find Norman Davis a cowhand who was interested in marrying Cathy. Earp only has a couple of options left which may result in him marrying Cathy.

Horse Race

Horse owner Milt Canyon owns the fastest horse around and has beaten every horse who has challenged his. Bullhead and braves from the Cheyenne tribe have illegally left the reservation to race an Indian pony against Canyon's horse. Canyon puts up considerable gold against horses and skins owned by the Indians. Shotgun tells Earp about the race which concerns Earp. He decides to allow the race and stays to ensure it is run fairly. The Indian pony wins so Canyon reluctantly pays off when Earp orders him to pay. After Earp and Shotgun leave, Canyon tries to force Bullhead to sell him the pony as he must have the fastest horse but Bullhead refuses. Canyon shoots him in the back so Bullhead stabs Canyon to stop him. There are no witnesses but the Indian braves. A mob wants to go after them but Earp says he will go alone. He finds Bullhead shot in the back and removes the bullet. He tells both Bullhead and Little Elk that Bullhead must return for a trial to keep the peace. Earp gives them four days as he is forced to hold back a mob who want a lynching. If Bullhead returns, what type of justice will he receive?

Many a young boy has runaway and headed west hoping to live the life they read about in dime novels and see at wild west shows. Dodge City is plagued with them causing trouble. Earp arrests a boy who looks to be seventeen trying to buy a drink and wearing a gun. Earp fines him $25 for wearing the gun but the kid refuses to give his name, home, or age. He has $500 so he is not destitute. Earp keeps his gun while assigning Deputy Walt to trail him. The kid tries to buy a pistol at Kelley's hardware store but Kelley refuses to sell him one. Walt stops him from buying a gun on the street so that night the kid breaks into Kelley's store. Earp stops him but not before he takes a few shots. After searching his room, Earp finds his name which he uses to track down his home. His father is a judge and the boy stole $900 from him. While in jail the kid, Alfred Horton, takes up with a member of the Greasy Murkin gang. Horton escapes and heads to Greasy's camp as his parents arrive. Earp and Shotugn track him down but decide to see if he learns a lesson being with Murkin which he does but it may have deadly results for Earp.

One Murder - Fifty Suspects

Loan shark Skinner Smith is found dead in his shop and Dr. McCarty confirms he was poisoned. A plug of tobacco was found in Skinner's hand which Dr. McCarty finds to have poison in it including strychnine. Everyone in town hated Skinner so there were dozens of people who had threatened to kill him. Working with Skinner's records Earp and Shotgun question people all over town but no one confesses. They notice that bank clerk Clark has borrowed money multiple times in increasing amounts to fund his poker gambling. Clark wants to marry Janey Logan but she refuses until her ailing grandfather passes away. Her grandfather is not impressed with Clark being a only a bank clerk. Clark asks her to marry him immediately so they can leave town but when she refuses he leaves on the stage anyway. Earp hearing this stops the stage and arrests Clark who does not confess. An upset Janey tries to break Clark out of jail but Earp stops her sending her home to her grandfather. Earp decides to charge Clark based on circumstantial evidence although he wonders if Clark is covering for someone. Judge Tobin tells him to "investigate" further.

How to Be a Sheriff

While Earp is out of town, Del Mathey replaces Bat Mastersn as the new Sheriff of Ford County. His family who owns a ranch and his girl friend Elsa Jordan whose lawman father was ambushed and killed urged him to run. He believes it to be an office job involving serving subpoenas and other papers. The dangerous work will be handled by Earp as Dodge City Marshal. Earp has to tell Mathey that his limits are the city boundary unless in hot pursuit and that Mathey needs to hire experienced deputies. The county is the Sheriff's responsibility. Mathey's first task is to evict the Grogan brothers from land on which they are squatting. They use rifle fire to drive away the sheriff and his deputy. His deputy quits when he is unable to find help for a posse. Mathey considers quitting but Earp and Elsa convince him to stay. With Earp's help they take the Grogin brothers but Mathey runs under fire. Earp tells him not to worry until after his second time in a gunfight. A gang working with the Groans decides to take Elsa hostage in return for the release of the Grogans in Earp's jail forcing Mathey's hand.

The Judas Goat

Some lawmen in the west would do anything to earn bounties and catch outlaws but entrapment was illegal. Earp is faced with this situation when Deputy US Marshal Hank Drew enters his office for help in catching the Rocky Griswold gang steal a gold shipment. Earp says it is entrapment and he refuses to go along even when offered part of the reward. After Drew leaves his office, Joan Deming drops in to talk to Earp. Her father owns a ranch and she is friends with Rocky and his men. She tells Earp they are out of work cowboys who are hungry that she has been helping with handouts. She is afraid Drew is talking them into committing a crime. Drew contacts Mr. Casland and Mayor Kelley about the issue. Kelley wants to go along with Drew while Casland realizes Earp could be correct. Joan while taking food to the gang tries to dissuade Rocky from going along with the robbery but the men are hurting. She tells him she saw Drew talking to Earp but when Drew returns he says he was arrested. Earp develops a plan to take the men without gun play. He along with Joan stops the gang and arrests Drew. However, Earp's job may be in jeopardy now if Rocky and his men refuse to talk.

Doc Fabrique's Greatest Case

Shotgun is holding Dr. McCarty hostage in his office wanting McCarty to look at his sick mule Roscoe but McCarty wants to attend to his human patients. Earp intervenes convincing McCarty to take a quick look. He tells them the mule smells like he drunk rum. Since the mule has a fever, they try to cool him with a wet blanket and ice. Earp decides to send a telegram to Doc Fabrique only saying someone is near death. Doc rushes from Wichita to Dodge City thinking Earp is near death. With some coaxing he looks at Roscoe and concludes he is suffering from sorghum beer poisoning. A man called Shuffles enters the stable and tells Shotgun he saw Heck Miller and friends feed a gallon of sorghum beer to Roscoe the day before. Shotgun leaves to track the group down camped outside of town at the J-W camp. Earp soon follows but he arrives to late to stop Shotgun from getting retribution forcing Earp to arrest Shotgun. Hopefully, Doc Fabrique can save Shotgun as well as Roscoe.

The Actress

The men of the west were always excited when beauty came to them as was the case with the actress Cora Campbell. She arrives with men swarming the station including silversmith Tom Tanner. When Tom introduces himself to her by picking up her handkerchief, gunman Clay Bronson attacks Tom but Earp breaks up the conflict. Earp tells Clay that he must check his guns if he stays in Dodge City. Later when Tom asks to walk Cora, she is busy but agrees to supper that evening. Later Cora's maid Mrs. Calloway drops into Earp's office asking to keep Tom away from Cora for his safety. Earp can do little but he visits Cora to ask her to turn Tom away for his safety. Tom arrives with a gift but she tells him to leave. Tom realizes that Earp is trying to stop a fight between him and Clay. Later Shotgun finds Tom beaten up in an alley. Tom says Clay did it. Dr. McCarty arrives later with the body of Clay who was stabbed with a silver letter opener. Earp arrests Tom who confesses to it but Earp's suspicions lie elsewhere as surprises are in store for all.

Love and Shotgun Gibbs

Shotgun Gibbs has fallen for the new blonde milliner Phronsie LaTour. To meet her he tries to buy a hat for his mule Roscoe. She also takes a liking to Shotgun telling him she needs protection from a man who approached her on a stage coach. Meanwhile, Earp is contacted by a special agent from the Santa Fe railroad about a gang led by One Eyed Brown planning to rob the railroad. The word is that he has a blonde sister who provides information to the gang before a robbery. Shotgun guarding the milliner is forced to kill a man crawling through the window of the shop. Earp tells Shotgun about the gang and searches her shop for evidence. When she is faced with meeting Roscoe the mule, Roscoe bites her even after Earp and Shotgun have her try feeding him treats. Shotgun sells Roscoe which Earp secretly buys since he intends to marry the milliner. Earp and a deputy make a search of cow camps for the gang with no results. The special agent receives word the gang will try to contact the sister so Earp decides to guard the milliner's place. His reasoning surprises everyone forcing the special agent to need a drink but Earp gets results.

Dodge Is Civilized

Earp is awaiting the arrival of Virgil and Morgan so the three of them can go west to ranch. Bat Masterson returns to Dodge City with a beautiful fiancée on his arm and a wad of cash in his pocket. His plan to refurbish a rundown saloon, The Lone Star, runs counter to Mayor Kelley's desire to shutdown disreputable businesses and places him in direct conflict with Mike de Graff who owns the biggest gambling hall south of the railroad tracks. Neither Earp or Judge Tobin believe Kelley's idea is feasible. When de Graff's hostess Sweetie, tells him about Bat's plan and that his new hostess Doreen is young and pretty, de Graff decides to fight back by destroying The Lone Star. Bat tells Doreen he wants to marry her once the saloon is making a profit. Ben Thompson returns to Dodge City wealthy after winning and selling a gold mine while in Denver. Mayor Kelley decides to pass a rule outlawing women or hostesses in saloons leaving Sweetie out of work and fed up with de Graff. Bat sells The Lone Star to Thompson as de Graff and friends destroy The Lone Star forcing Earp to intercede.

Little Gray Home in the West

Cash strapped Earp still desires to own a ranch of his own so he can give up the life of a lawman. Watching as Doc is offered a first deed to a ranch in Colorado during a poker game Earp offers to put up $300 for part of the deed. Doc wins so Earp convinces him to ride along to check out what they assume is a deserted 1,000 acre ranch. They find a widow, Nellie Dawson living there who says she has until November to redeem the ranch. Cattle thieves have stolen most of her herd and ambushed her husband with drought adding to the problems. She believe the culprits to be Curly Bill Brocius and Johnny Ringo who own the ranch next door. Earp sends Doc over to talk to them where he learns the Buff Conrad gang killed Mr. Dawson. Earp and Mrs. Dawson find themselves attracted to each other but Earp decides the law must come first. Doc and Earp plot a plan with the help of Nellie to bring the outlaws to justice while romance must wait.

The Cyclone

It is a hot September day in Dodge City with everyone sweltering in the heat. Miss Mamie drops off ice at the Marshal's office for the prisoners including her boyfriend and the staff. At the telegraph office word is received that a cyclone is hitting other Kansas towns. The young boy George running down Front Street yelling a cyclone is coming grabs Earp's attention. Once he learns it isn't a joke, Earp starts preparing for the storm. He has Shotgun gather in special deputies although Shotgun doesn't believe there is any danger since his mule Roscoe hasn't warned him. Mayor Kelley wants Earp to call the city disaster team together to prepare while Dr. McCarty is gathering people and supplies to go into his storm cellar. Others are going for safety in the ice house. Earp spots little George on the street trying to catch his dog. He tells George to go to safety while Earp will catch the dog. He chases the dog into a saloon while several of the people hearing about Earp and the dog come to his aid as the cyclone is sighted.

Kelley Was Irish

Over time Dodge City changed into a peaceful town with homesteaders becoming more important than the cattle drive trade and the cowboys. Mayor Kelley reacted to the change by becoming a law and order Mayor to maintain his job. When Doc is forced to kill a gunman coming at him with two guns at the Cowhand Saloon owned by Mike de Graff and is found innocent, Kelley wants Earp and Shotgun to shutdown the saloon and run Doc out of town. Both refuse so Kelley as usual fires them. Shotgun leaves for Wyoming while Earp plans to wait for his brothers to go to Arizona. Kelley hires Dave Mather who wants the job as the new Marshal. Mather has a bad reputation and quickly proves it by shaking down all the gambling and saloons south of the line for payoffs. Mike de Graff refuses to pay and Earp stops Doc from a duel with Mather. When de Graff is found dead from two barrels of a shotgun, Doc goes after Mather who goes into hiding as his deputy quietly unloads the spent shells in his shotgun. Doc and Earp search for Mather separately as Kelley realizes what he has created.

Arizona Comes to Dodge

In late 1879 Virgil and Morgan Earp arrive by stage in Dodge City to ask Wyatt to join them near Tombstone, Arizona. Wyatt tired of the law profession is ready to join them. At the same time Old Man Clanton, his sons Phin and Ike, and two gunmen show up in Dodge City awaiting Dave Burnett of the Lazy Q. When the hotel is full, they kick people out taking their rooms. They sold Burnett stolen cattle for $8,000 and they want their money. The cattle were taken back by the Mexicans who owned them so Burnett is short money. Clanton gives him until 9:00 pm to raise $6,000. Burnett won't seek Wyatt's help due to a previous run in but Doc convinces Wyatt to talk to Burnett. Wyatt decides to take on the Clanton gang without guns telling Virgil and Morgan to get the deputies to help but they decide to help themselves. A full scale fistfight breaks out in the hotel with the Earps winning the battle but ultimately losing the war. Of course it is only their first battle to come.
