Mr. Egan reports a man killed in the back room of his Orient Saloon. The unknown man was shot in the face with a shotgun. Earp finds a slip of paper in a pocket with numbers on it that are the combination to the safe in the room. The safe has money in it but Egan denies owning it. He finally tells Earp that he rented the safe to Red Bascomb a member of the Crummy Newton gang. Earp leaves the money as a trap. Allen Pinkerton arrives at Earp's office to tell him and the Judge he is there after the Newton gang but primarily to recover $40,000 that was stolen. The dead man was a Pinkerton man inside the gang. That evening Earp arrests Bascomb returning for the money but later they find the money missing. Against the rules, Earp releases Bascomb to recover the money Pinkerton alleges Earp stole. Bascomb kills Egan to recover the money and holes up in the hotel. The next day when Earp stops Pinkerton from going after Bascomb, the Judge takes his badge but Bascomb gets away with Pinkerton and his men following. Earp and his two deputies go separately. They see Newton set an ambush for the Pinkerton men but are able to rescue the Pinkerton posse and arrest the gang.
