Episode 1
The New Man

In 1965 Royal Military Police patrol the crown protectorate of Aden. Alison, bored wife of lieutenant Ed Laithwaite, has one last fling with her lover, Captain Nick Page before he leaves Aden for promotion whilst Ed goes undercover to learn more about Kadir Hakim, who is importing arms to fight the British. Buttoned-up Joe Martin arrives with his amiable new wife Honor to replace Page to find a drunk Alison, who is keen to befriend Honor. She also confides in Mary, wife of station head Harry Markham, that she is pregnant. Whilst Markham argues with Ed over the treatment of prisoners Page is ambushed and killed on his way to the airport and his young driver, Corporal Tony Armstrong , rescued by local girl Yusra before he limps back to camp.

Starfish

Following Page's murder Markham sends out a raid party on foot to capture Hakim, leading another group to rendezvous with them, along with photo-journalist Martha Franklin. The foot patrol is ambushed and completely wiped out and their mission is a failure, Sergeant Baxter, son of an ailing Great War hero, being particularly affected at seeing a comrade's decapitated head. At the base Alison befriends Honor, taking her to the BP Club where they meet the charismatic Harvey Tilbrook, and incurring Martin's disapproval whilst, after a distressing day, Markham returns to find that his wife has successfully given birth to a son.

Above Thy Deep and Dreamless Sleep

As the post prepares for Christmas Hakim is captured and reprisals are feared. Markham sends Martin to retrieve Martha Franklin's photos following the massacre, fearing they will discredit the British, and he does, but keeps them, telling Markham he has destroyed them. Aware of Alison's affair with Page Ed encourages her friendship with Honor, who is shocked by her drunken outspokenness at Christmas dinner and her admission that she is pregnant. Protective of his wife Ed claims he already knew when Honor tells him at the BP club Christmas party. Tony, attracted to Yusra, now the Markham's nanny is puzzled by her rejection of him and soon after a terrible discovery is made.

The CO's Boy

As the men battle a sand storm to find the abducted George Markham his mother Mary realizes Yusra's duplicity and part in the abduction, leading to the arrest of her family, though Martin orders their release in the hopes they will lead the officers to the rebels. Markham brutally interrogates Hakim but gets no joy whilst Martin approaches Martha for her help but all she does is to remind him of an incident in his past and Ed goes undercover, using his contacts to locate the little boy but is badly injured in a failed rescue attempt. Meanwhile Alison, after a bungled abortion attempt, gets unwelcome news from her doctor and Honor discovers that her husband has kept the roll of film he confiscated from Martha Franklin.

The Markhams watch filmed evidence of George's capture with Mary sure that Yusra is looking out for him. A deadline is set for his exchange with Hakim and Yusra, regretful of her actions, sends Tony a coded message as to George's location . As the hand-over takes place Tony insists that Yusra is released along with George but not everything goes as planned. Meanwhile Alison displays a new loyalty to the recovering Ed.
Episode 6
The Bigger Picture

Despite rescuing George Martin is put on trial for disobeying orders. Markham is called as a reluctant prosecution witness but Ed defends him splendidly, despite the revelation of an incident from Martin's past. Honor seeks the help of Martha to save her husband, the two women discovering official double dealing which could clear Martin. Meanwhile Ed has a proposition for Alison and Tony seeks out Yusra, on the run from the rebels, who see her as a traitor.
