King Alfred's health is failing. As time runs out for him to unite the kingdoms of England, his greatest warrior Uhtred must lead Wessex in battle against the fearsome Bloodhair. When Uhtred is cursed by vicious seer Skade, tragedy follows.

Uhtred was seen digging up his heathen wife in consecrated ground and then burning her on a funeral pyre, and prince Aethelwold craftily sets him up to be accused of desecration by the already hostile queen. Alfred wouldn't hear of punishment, but the gross phrasing by brother Godwin enrages Uhtred enough to smack the old monk, who makes a fatal fall. Now Alfred still offers to buy off banishment by 'weregeld', but the proud knight prefers to leave court with his faithful followers. On the road to his Danish brother Ragnar, he gets poisoned, but dares not kill the witch and recovers. Prince Aethelwold plots a grand coalition against Alfred, promising Mercian king Aethelred they can each have an Anglosaxon throne and convincing the rogue Dane leaders to put their differences aside to amass a great Danish army.

Having refused to redeem his priest-whacking by an oath of loyalty to crown prince Edward, Uthred and his followers ride north to join his brother Ragnar and the other Danish lords, who agree to ally into a great Viking army, as suggested eagerly by Wessex crown pretender Aethelwold, who is nevertheless treated with utter contempt despite his knowledge of Saxon discords which may yield defecting allies. Mercian king Aethelred orders his Wessex wife Aethelflaed killed, but she's warned, flees and seeks help from father Beocco, who reluctantly leaves court to follow her north and seeks Uther's help.

Uhtred reluctantly accepts to save princess Aethelflaed, despite her relieving him from his oath, so he breaks his word to enraged brother Ragnar, again, by leaving the possibly stillborn Danish alliance. With his followers he rides to the nunnery where Aethelflaed took refuge with a few inept guards, which are easily overcome by the men of Haesten, who first made true his promise to inform Alfred, and Bloodhair. Uhtred holds out against a first strike, and threatened with arson of the wooden abbey strikes a deal: spring Aethelflaed for witch Skade, who curses him again, having earlier 'offered' to reign with him all England after Alfred's death. Preparing for death and hiding it, Alfred forces crown prince Edward to betroth the daughter of mighty lord Aldhelm while his commoner love bride Ecgywn is forced to enter a nunnery. Cnut promises his protection to Aethelwold if he kills Ragnar before being stabbed himself, which succeeds bloodily. Aethelred failed to have Aethelflaed killed, stabbed the 'loser' but soon changes his mind.

The Viking reveling over the alleged death of Alfred is cut short as Ragnar is found murdered in his tent, stabbed while making adulterous love. Fresh widow Brida makes a spectacle blaming all warriors for letting it happen and in advance for letting the army fall army, Cnut rivaling Bloodhair and allegations being made about the murderer. Determined to undo Skade's curse, Uthred proposes to seize the opportunity and defeat Ragnar's remnant own force before the Vikings may reunite, but finds bitter Alfred unwilling to give him 1000 men. Edward however steps up to his future royal duty by promising 500 Wessex soldiers matching Aethelflaed's Mercian army.

Episode 6

Uthred lured into the field hate-consumed Haesten's Vikings, trusting Edward's promise, gets surrounded and is almost massacred before Alfred, who took command from Edward, finally orders relief. Afterward Edward apologizes for out-staging his royal father, to get the surprising answer he finally proved himself worthy of the succession, which is now enacted. Uthred sets out on a quest to save Ragnar's soul with scary, vindictive widow Brida, who only promises to delay killing him, until Uthred explains his 'betrayal' actually saved unwitting Ragnar's life Together they find a sorcerer and get him to do the required magic, with a grim reward. Aethelwold tells Cnut and Bloodhair he murdered Ragnar, but instead of celebration gets the daunting order to murder Uthred as well.

Episode 7

Finally returning to his estate, having defeated the Danes again, Uthred finds bishop Erkenwald Christianized it but reverts that, with 'help' from Skade, whom he seems to have accepted as his new partner, but after one more love act in the lake drowns her to undo the spell, discretely observed by loyal retainer Osferth. prince Aethelwold arrives at Alfred's court, forced to attempt eliminating Uthred for the Danes, but Edward's father in law has him arrested instead and charged with the capital offense high treason. Alfred wrestles with his own impending divine judgment and decides to apply 'mercy': the kin is 'only' demi-blinded with a hot iron in one eye.

Episode 8

Only after disposing of his toxic lover to shake off the curse on his won state, Uthred is ready to return for Wessex's royal court. There ailing Alfred prepares the wedding of his crown prince Edward to the handpicked bride Aelflaed, whose father poses as senior adviser. The prospect f Edward's succession makes opponents eager to conspire for a coup now, implying pretender Aethelwold, who also seeks revenge for his blinded eye. Although banished, hence subject to killing without trial, Uhtred arrives in Winchester incognito with a small trusted retinue, welcomed by old friends.

Episode 9

Feeling his death near but heir Edward unready, Alfred secretly summons Uhtred, admits his admiration, offers him a free, written pardon and asks -no condition- to mind the aetheling again, while queen Aelswith schemes in vain to have Alfred retract the heathen's pardon. Prince Aethelwold plots again as pretender with Mercian king Aethelred, earldorman Sigebriht of Kent and the Danes, while his cocky follower Tidman taunts 'as Dane' father Beoccoa' wife, Uhtred's sister Thyra, whom he ends up burning at home and Alfred dies after Uhtred promises to stay in Winchester till Edward is crowned.

Episode 10

Queen Aelswith and bishop Erkenwald chase Beoccoa from court after officiating Alfred's funeral and have Uhtred arrested after reverting Alfred's pardon, but when Steapa is ordered to escort the prisoner outside Wessex, he appeals to the public and Edward, whose authority in challenged by Aethelwold as it is for the witan to decide the succession, but the crown prince decides to stand by Alfred's will and Uhtred decides to stay and support Edward as Alfred hoped. Rejoicing in Alfred's demise, Cnut and Heasten assemble a great Danish army to crush the Saxons, which Aethelwold promises to be helped by Saxon turncoats like Sigebriht of Kent. Brida is obsessed with revenging Ragnar and counts on Uhtred to kill the pretender with a sword dipped in his -in fact Thyra's- blood. Mercian king Aethelred stabs his counselor Aldhelm, who flees to Aethelflaed, for failing to bring the royal guard to Winchester, and returns home to pick the wining side. Uhtred leads the war council and inspires Edward to call on all free Saxons to join the decisive battle in a forest. The Danish spies are expertly eliminated, their column surprise-attacked, but all hinges on mounted reinforcements which can go to either side. Uhtred leaves the battlefield to save Raganr from hell to Walhalla.
