Comedienne Emma Kennedy recalls her childhood in 1977 in Stevenage where her mother Brenda, a hopeless cook, persuades put-upon husband Tony to stage a diner party for quarrelsome family friends Jenny and Tim. A quest for pasta leads to a rift between the couple whilst Emma innocently exposes Tim's infidelity but Brenda is determined to hold her evening, with extra guests, the extremely jovial Palmers. An awkward dinner party ensues thanks to a disastrous lasagne and the arrival of an unwelcome guest.

On Valentine's Day Emma is the recipient of a card and sets out to unmask her mystery admirer whilst Brenda shocks Tony by announcing that she has a date for her driving test when she has never had a lesson in her life. She recruits Tim to give her a crash course but she fails all the same - and there is worse to come.

As Tim nervously prepares for fatherhood Brenda and Jenny welcome Marie and Lotte, two Danish Lesbians who have moved into the square. Unfortunately Jenny gives the impression that she and Brenda are a gay couple, as are Tony and Tim. This results in much confusion when the two couples, along with Emma and the Palmers, are invited by the Danes for a cultural exchange evening - before the truth eventually comes out.

Jessopportunity Knocks

Brenda decides that the square should have its own version of television talent show 'Opportunity Knocks' with a clap-o-meter built by Tony. Brenda opts for a disco dancing display, partnered by a reluctant Tim, whilst Tony and Jenny demonstrate kung-fu. Both parents pay would-be sleuth Emma to spy and report on the other as the competition hots up. However they had all reckoned without the Palmers being last minute entrants.

Wedding

Emma nearly ruins Jenny and Tim's wedding day by accidentally destroying the heavily pregnant Jenny's bridal gown as well as dirtying her bridesmaid's dress by wearing it to play football. Other tribulations follow before the couple finally tie the knot and Tim delivers a heart-felt speech whilst Emma returns to the playing field to score the wining goal for her team.

Camping

The Kennedys go on a camping holiday to Wales with 'honeymooners' Jenny and Tim and Tony's gloomy mother. After fourteen hours in an unreliable Land Rover they reach the site but with no toilet, heavy rain and gale force winds and one flimsy tent for the six of them they are forced to break into a caravan, jumping out before it rolls over a cliff. It is certainly a holiday to remember.
