Episode 1
An Anger Greater Than Mine

The High Chaparral hands are being attacked by a large, well armed and trained force. However, the cattle are not being stolen. Don Sebastian Montoya arrives at the High Chaparral asking Big John to honor their agreement to help protect each other as he is being attacked as well. In addition he is able to tell Big John who is behind the attacks. It is Diego de la Paula who sided with Maximilian. The government took his hacienda which Montoya bought and Diego wants it back plus part of Montoya's hacienda. Although Montoya doesn't tell Big John, Victoria and Diego were very close which is why Diego is also attacking the High Chaparral. The attacks are causing both ranches to lose men to death and quitting in fear. Neither man will go to the other's aid for fear of losing their own ranch. Big John has an idea to use smoke signals and a Pony Express system to reduce the time to communicate between the ranches. Even though Joe is wounded during his ride the system works. Montoya decides to confront Diego personally in front of everyone resulting in a fight which Montoya wins. Seeing their leader lose and being surrounded the Diego gang quits their leader.

Spokes

Against the advice of Big John and Manolito, Buck decides to take a well deserved break over the Fourth of July at the mining town of Spokes, which has a rugged reputation. He finds the people there unfriendly. In the saloon he witnesses an old hide skinner call out a young man for cheating at cards. The young man, Bod Pierce, draws first but is killed as he severely wounds the old skinner. Buck finds cards hidden in Bod's sleeve, proving he was cheating. With no one willing to help the old skinner, Buck takes him to the hotel and gets him medical care. One by one the residents tell Buck to turn the old skinner over to Bod's father, China Pierce, who they all fear. With China being a cattleman, Buck finds it hard to believe China would hurt the old man but soon realizes he is the only person willing to help the man who opened the west to rest of them. Buck confronts China who is surprised Buck is standing up to him. Buck is forced to shoot and wound China ending the conflict. Back home Big John and Manolito want to hear about Buck's "party time".
Episode 3
Only the Bad Come to Sonora

Big John sent Manolito to his father's hacienda to broker a breeding fee for Montoya's stallion. After paying the $200 fee, Manolito leaves for the High Chaparral riding the stallion dressed rather well for the trip. He stops to help a man lying face down in the desert only to be robbed of the stallion and his money plus left hanging by his arms with no boots. He frees himself and returns to the High Chaparral. Big John sends Manolito with another $800 as a security deposit on the horse while his men look for the thieves. Montoya upset with his son's lack of concern pushes him to go after the horse himself. He soon learns the Mexican peons give him no respect due to his wealthy status so he changes to peon style clothes. A poor farmer gives him a clue to the men's location based on the name of a woman. He finds her which leads him quickly to the men who beat him up when he tries to steal back the stallion. He tracks them down again but they decide to kill him when they tire of his interference. He uses the lure of his father's wealth in a plot to stop them while learning the leader has no use for any Mexican.
Episode 4
Wind

Big John calls upon his neighboring fellow ranchers to propose they drive their own herds to Wichita instead of selling them to the neighboring Texans who drive them north for most of the profit. They agree with Big John selecting him to lead the drive. While gathering the cattle, a couple of the ranchers including Fraley catch a young Indian boy with dead cattle. They believe he is Apache and are preparing to lynch him when Big John intervenes. He stops them saying he will take the loss. They agree reluctantly. The boy delivers maverick to Big John to pay for the cattle. They find he is a good worker but mysterious. He is called Wind being half Pawnee and half white. He stops Buck and Manolito from driving cattle to a poisoned waterhole but when one of the ranchers is said to be killed by Apaches they are still suspicious of Wind. A report that one of the ranches is being burned by Apaches causes Big John to leave with most of the men. However, in reality, it transpires that Fraley hired Comancheros to attack the High Chaparral as he believes Big John almost destroyed his ranch years ago with a backfire. Wind has discovered the truth, warning Manolito, and takes out most of the Comancheros on his own.
Episode 5
A Matter of Survival

Victoria along with Sam and Pedro are returning to the ranch when they spot a burning wagon. At Victoria's urging they check it finding a young man and woman dead but a small baby alive. Dan Casememt arrives who is the dead man's father and the baby's grandfather. Against Sam's judgment, Dan buries the dead couple. Due to the delay the Apache have time to return and attack. Dan's ability with his rifle is a major factor in repelling the Apaches. When he tries to leave with baby Joey, Sam stops him and takes his guns. They leave together for the High Chaparral which is fifty miles away. At a river crossing Sam holds off the Apache while the others continue until the horses tire out. Sam catches up but they are cornered. After the horses rest, Sam decides to let Pedro go alone for help. However, it looks bleak for the rest of them as the Apache continue to attack including the use of fire arrows. Victoria has become attached to baby Joey and apologizes to Dan for keeping them from escaping on their own. The Apache retreat when Pedro returns with help so Dan with baby Joey leaves before Big John arrives to thank him.
Episode 6
It Takes a Smart Man

Manolito spots a man being chased by a band of Apaches. He joins the man to help him but is told his help is unneeded. As the battle continues Manolito notices the man has disappeared and suddenly the gunfire is gone as he finds all the Apaches dead. Later, the man arrives at the High Chaparral looking for Big John while ordering Buck to tend to his horse. He is a gunfighter Tulsa Red Big John saved as a witness at his trial who now wants $5000 which Big John refuses. To force his hand, Tulsa threatens to kill Buck the next time he steps into Tucson unless he is paid. Buck leaves with the hands to work on the ranch but Big John with Manolito goes to Tucson where he borrows the money to "loan" to Tulsa Red. When Buck hears what Big John did, he goes alone to retrieve the money from Tulsa. He tells Tulsa he can find him in the saloon the next day at Tucson. Buck returns the money to Big John who has the men stay out of the argument. Tulsa arrives to confront Buck at the saloon, however, Buck has a surprise for Tulsa to even the odds in a gun fight.

A Good Sound Profit

Revolutionaries hoping to revive the Maximilian empire are trying to buy supplies but no one will deal with them. However, Big John offers o provide them what they need as long as they can pay. He has his hands rounding up horses, saddles, guns, ammo, and dynamite. Manolito tries to convince Big John he is doing the wrong thing but Big John says Mexican politics are not his problem. Manolito and Buck leave while Victoria stays but lets Big John know she is not happy. Further complicating the issue his ranch hands are not happy either. Wind questions Sam and Buck about it trying to understand what is happening and tells Victoria she should have faith in Big John. After the first delivery Big John says he needs cash up front in the future as he can only buy with cash for them. The Colonel does not control the purse strings so Big John demands that he meet the man who does. After the last delivery he goes alone to collect for the goods. He learns the local banker is bankrolling the rebels. Manolito against Big John's advice follows him and is captured. To save him, Big John has to reveal he is really working for the Mexican government to catch the leader of the rebels.
Episode 8
Too Late the Epitaph

Manolito sent south to check the price of cattle spots a stage being robbed and one of the robbers killed. He catches up with the second robber and recovers the money but the robber escapes. He stops to clean up before returning the money when a posse arrives and arrests him. The guard identifies Manolito as the robber. When he hears David Redmond is in town, he asks to see his old friend. Redmond has the Marshal release Manolito and tells Manolito to meet him and his wife at his house. At the house Manolito finds the town founder shot to death and the Marshal behind him to arrest him. Manolito is scheduled to hang when they bring the real holdup man Roy in after another bungled robbery attempt. They work together to escape and go to the robbers hideout where Redmond shows up. He was the inside man with Roy's dead partner. Redmond wants Manolito and Roy to hold up two more shipments which they agree to do. However, Manolito has no plans to hold up a stage but allows Redmond to trap himself when he holds up the stage while Manolito and Roy ride through town for an alibi.
Episode 9
The Forge of Hate

While rounding up horses, a group of hands are attacked by Apaches ending with a man dying on each side. At the Apache camp the Chief is dying. He has named Two Pony to be Chief after he passes. The brave Grey Wolf led the raid on the ranch hands believing it is the Apaches' duty to kill all whites. Two Pony on the other hand believes the Apache can only survive through peace with the whites and he is encouraged to try it by the dying Chief Dull Knife. After hearing Two Pony's request for peace, Big John decides to try it by having the Apache take on the job of rounding up wild horses, breaking, and shoeing them. Two Pony decides to learn the farrier work himself. Grey Wolf tries to interfere by wounding a ranch hand. When Dull Knife dies, he has Two Pony staked out and leads a band to attack Big John's crew delivering horses to the Army. Dull Knife's widow frees Two Pony who leads a band to stop Grey Wolf who has been mortally wounded in the attack. Two Pony tell Big John he will listen to his people to determine their future.
Episode 10
Fiesta

Buck has beat out Manolito for the right to go to Mexico to attend a large Fiesta in a small town there known for a wild time. On the way he stops for a drink at a cantina in Mexico where he sees the local sport of boy fighting. The boys are orphans owned by men who wager on their fights. Seeing the losing boy Beto taking a beating Buck stops the fight to rescue him. When he learns the boy is essentially a slave, he decides to take Beto with him against the wishes of Homero José who owns Beto. With the help of the Mexican Federales, the two escape town but are tracked down by Homero. During an attack they lose Buck's horse but Buck is able to get Beto to a poor family farm where they are fed. Homero catches up them but the farmer ultimately ends up shooting Homero. The family takes in Beto who although never talkative or friendly hates be be left behind by Buck. Buck never makes Fiesta and returns to the High Chaparral emotionally drained.
Episode 11
A Matter of Vengeance

Three outlaws mistake Buck for the man who has been following them. When Gait takes a shot at Buck his horse rears and Buck hits the ground knocked out. Dan Casement finds and tends to Buck. Buck awakens that night as the two are camped together. The next morning Dan leaves for Tucson while Buck returns to the ranch. At the saloon in town Dan runs into Sam who Dan helped save along with Victoria, Pedro, and Dan's grandson Joey a few months earlier from the Apaches. Sam learns Dan is after three men who burned his ranch and killed Joey. The outlaws are not in Tucson so Dan returns to the ranch with Sam to return the crucifix Victoria gave to Joey. Dan is now a lawman so he can legally go after the men. He returns to Tucson to hunt for the men along with Sam who says he is there to hire hands. The men show up but they corner Dan in an alley to beat him up. He is able to return to the rooming house where the owner Mrs. Colton has a strong interest in Dan. The next day Sam learns why the men are in Tucson but can anyone stop Dan from getting revenge for their actions.
Episode 12
Pale Warrior

A man who appears to be an Apache is chased by them to the High Chaparral ranch where he falls off his horse passed out. The Apaches are chased off. When they examine the man, they see he is a young white man. After he awakes, they learn he has been held as an Apache slave for fifteen years but still speaks English. He says he wishes to return to the white world and hates the Apache. Big John leaves it to Sam who decides to hire Talbot. Wind and Buck have reservations about Talbot's true intent and many of the hands believe he thinks as an Apache so they don't trust him. Wind, who is assigned the task of teaching Talbot about the ranch, senses Talbot is lying so he relays his concerns to Buck. When Talbot is injured stringing barbed wire, he returns to the ranch so Wind follows him finding he meets with the Apaches. Wind reports this to Buck and Big John but Talbot claims Chief Taslasrosa wants to talk to Big John alone. Big John goes along but when Talbot shows his true intent he learns Buck and Wind have followed. Talbot is shot but left for the Apache who return to the potential Apache warrior who failed in his mission.
Episode 13
The Badge

While cleaning house Manolito and Victoria open a locked chest finding a badge, handcuffs, and a wanted poster for a man looking like Buck. Buck comes in to explain the items and tells them he is the wanted man on the poster which has no name. He and friends after the war roamed around but could find no jobs so three of them decided to rob a bank which Buck was against. He made the foolish decision to intervene to stop it and instead was pegged as one of the robbers. A shooting during the robbery resulted in Parsons being wounded. Buck left alone only to be captured by a lawman who was Big John who he had not seen in five years. He tells Big John he is innocent who decides Buck's best action is to turn himself in to the law. However, Billings and Mobley are after him for interfering and are now after both Big John and Buck. After help from some locals, Buck and Big John are trapped in a barn by the two men. They have stumbled into the three robber's meeting place. The wounded Parsons already in the barn takes them prisoner but passes out and eventually dies before he clears Buck. They then catch Billings and Mobley after which Big John tells them Parsons cleared Buck before dying.
Episode 14
The New Lion of Sonora

Buck returns with news of the death of Don Sebatian. Everyone assumes Manolito who doesn't want to succeed his father might not have a choice as he resigns himself to the task. But when his father's will is read it states that because Manolito doesn't want to succeed him, Don Sebastion decided to hand the reins to his brother, Domingo. Domingo, however, spends most of his time drinking and gambling in Mexico City. Manolito finds him and brings him to Rancho Montoya where upon arriving, he says he plans to sell the ranch and travel the world. Big John and his men who have been protecting the ranch leave along with Victoria for the High Chaparral. Manolito stays behind to see if he can convince his uncle to take his responsibilities seriously. Unknown to everyone the lawyer Nervo is feeding information to the bandit Julio Armendaris who is rustling all the cattle. Don Domingo eventually realizes the ranch will be worthless with no cattle. He has a change of heart in which he uses his charisma to persuade the peons to return to his aide while Manolito convinces Big John to return to help. Working together they discover the treachery and plot an end to it.
Episode 15
Sangre

Because of an attack at another settlement, Big John races out to recall the hands to the ranch. He and Manolito find Buck who discovered a wounded Apache who tried to kill Buck but failed due to his wound. They return to the ranch with the Apache and prepare the ranch for a sustained attack by the Apache. Three soldiers arrive who tracked them with the Apache who is Sangre Chief of the Apache who has led an army of 200 braves out of the mountains. Big John refuses to let them take or kill Sangre as he wants him as a hostage nor mistreated. A trooper is sent for help but gunshots say he didn't make it. The Apaches attack but help is needed. That night both Buck and Manolito sneak out to bring help. Manolito goes dressed as an Apache hoping it gives him an edge. Although he makes progress, Buck is captured. The Apache ask to trade him for Sangre but Big John refuses the trade. Manolito confuses the Apache with his costume and is able to steal a horse from them. The fight at the ranch forces the men into the house as a last refuge and Big John gives Victoria a pistol. Manolito's disguise works too well when he contacts the Army forcing him into getting help in an unorthodox manner.
Episode 16
The Hostage

Victoria and Wind enter the Tucson bank as the Army finishes making a deposit and Bo Bodeen argues with the management about a loan. After the Army troops leave near closing time, a trio of bank robbers enter led by the renown and aging outlaw Morgan MacQuarie. The bank officer Mr. Seechrist is knifed by Yuma and hits his head in the mêlée that occurs. The bank bookkeeper Pruitt doesn't know the combination to the safe so the robbers are forced to wait until Seechrist awakes or the bank owner arrives the next morning. While Bodeen and Wind are tied up, Victoria tends to Seechrist. Meelie Bodeen and her son Benji are left untied as is Pruitt who must pretend to work late. Bodeen and Yuma make threats while Victoria tries to convince MacQuarie's son Cullen to help as he was raised by a shop owner in Tucson but he refuses. When Seechrist dies, MacQuarie and everyone tries to keep it from Yuma who wants no witnesses left to the murder. Benji uses his slingshot to take out Yuma as the others disarm MacQuarie and Cullen.
Episode 17
A Man to Match the Land

A rain storm wipes out the herd of horses Big John is selling to the Army. He decides to go north into Apache lands under the control of Chief Red Eagle to gather a new herd. Although wary of the Apaches, he and a crew go there. They are met by Red Eagle who wants peace. He agrees to give Big John three days to gather horses in return for which Big John agrees to send him 10 head of cattle each month for a year. Futhermore, Red Eagle asks that they trade brothers for the three days. Buck stays with the Apache where he becomes friends with everyone including Tanea the wife of White Horse who is a white man but the adopted brother of Red Eagle. The men recognize him as Pal Morrison who is despised for standing by while a group of whites were massacred. The horse hunt is successful and peaceful. A few days later White Horse rides into the ranch wounded looking for a doctor to tend to his wife. The Cannons get a doctor who treats White Horse and is forced by Buck at gunpoint to ride to the Apache camp to treat Tanea. If she dies, Buck has to forfeit his life to accompany her in the afterworld before the doctor can operate on her appendix. The doctor is successful and in the end glad to help.
