For Ubuntu's 16th birthday, Gerald agrees to teach him to drive. Helen insists, though, that he can only drive in an emergency. While shopping, Helen is convinced by her peers that it is time to talk with Bliss about sexual activity. They wander onto the local college activity fair, and Helen is horrified that Bliss chooses the abstinence group over the sexually liberal reproductive health services. Gerald goes with Bliss to a purity dance, but both of them are afraid of the religious rituals associated with the event. They make an emergency call for Ubuntu to come and get them out.

Ubuntu feels untalented until he is recruited for the football team. His success as left tackle brings out Helen's long-repressed football hysteria. Gerald and Ubuntu clash with the football culture, especially when the boosters want to kill a pig that represents the opposing team. Ubuntu stays on the team only when they agree not to kill the pig. Bliss schemes for a college scholarship to avoid being trapped going to Greenville Community College, but finds the only way she might qualify for a scholarship is to take a college class at GCC. She tries it but then wigs out in the first class and pulls the fire alarm to escape. Her dream comes true when she is banned from GCC for life.

When Helen finds out that Gerald isn't getting credit for his ideas at work, she arranges for the chancellor of the college to come to dinner at their house. However, while shopping for the dinner at her favorite store, One Earth, she is accused of shoplifting and banned from One Earth permanently. She tries shopping at the Sav Big discount warehouse instead, but being banned from One Earth leaves her barely able to function, and so Gerald has to find a way to get Helen back into good standing at One Earth. Meanwhile, Bliss looks for a job so she can buy some better jeans. She finds that the jobs open to her as a 15-year-old are limited to peddling candy door-to-door and farm labor, while Ubuntu, who's 16, can work in air-conditioned comfort at One Earth.
