The elderly professor has his students act out a mock re-trial to test his defense strategy, but not only is Dr.Kimble's fate at stake, so is the disabled teacher's reputation and the self-respect of his most brilliant student whose idolatry of his hero crumbles as the arrogant ex-attorney slaps his heavy hand on the scales of justice. Watching closely for Kimble to show himself are a suspicious reporter and the local police.

Ellie and her mother Ada had hired a private detective to help find the one-armed man and he believes he now has, but when Kimble arrives to a rendezvous with Ellie she informs him that the one-armed man they discovered had died in a fire. Kimble is devastated but checks the story himself and believes it to be true. However the private detective does some more checking and finds the one-armed man who died was incarcerated the night of Helen Kimble's murder, meaning Kimble can still find his wife's killer. Ellie, however, wants Kimble for herself and withholds this information - and faces arrest as Lt. Gerard, a family friend of the Burnetts, has learned from a reluctant Ada of Ellie's rendezvous with Kimble and her plan to fly him out of the country.

The current sheriff, Sheriff Fallon, spots them while up in his helicopter. And then the tug of war begins. The former sheriff insists that Kimble is his prisoner, and he must bring Kimble in himself. The current sheriff wants the glory and credit of bringing in Kimble himself and radios back to the office that he will bring Kimble in. As they trek through the mountains, heading to the nearest town, Sheriff Fallon keeps trying to take Kimble away from Cole, but Cole outsmarts him at every turn. Meanwhile, Kimble must escape the both of them before they reach town.

The Braydon family's warped dynamics further ensnare the empathetic physician-on-the-run.

Richard knows of a secret bank account Helen kept in case of an emergency, and with Terry's help he finds it, thus saving Ed's business. But Edith's unending grief for Helen leads to a savage argument between her and Terry - and leaves Richard in even greater danger because Terry is in love with him and Edith, upon learning of his presence, icily vows to turn him over to police.

Soon, the lonely widow learns that Kimble is single and becomes predictably infatuated. Meanwhile, Gus is so short of money that he can't afford the insurance premium on his trucks and he's in danger of losing his business. Gus gets an offer to commit insurance fraud to make a quick buck. He's tempted because then he can get his business back on track and get rid of the widow with one big payoff. Kimble likes Gus and tries to talk him out of it. Later, he learns that the authorities suspect something and rushes to warn Gus.
