Meanwhile a Christmas party is in the works back at the fort, which Macleod thinks he hasn't been invited to. Macleod makes it back for the party and plays Santa Claus; only, the hero gets the best gift of all - a harmonica from Kathy (Susan Conway), with which they all sing "Jingle Bells."

The kids need to hatch a plan to raise money for a ski-doo that will come in handy at the fort. If they film the wolves in the area maybe they can sell the film to a buyer. Joe warns the kids that wolves are like a kind of dog - a wild dog - and that they are like people - some good and some bad. The kids stumble on a bad wolf who attacks them. Joe has to kill it after it ambushes him from the roof under which the kids are hiding from it.

Two men are poaching illegally on the game reserve out of season. Joe is ice-fishing at the time and the kids come to get him to tell him the news. Chub is injured after flying head-first into an ice-covered valley and Ranger Brody flies the helicopter into snowy territory just in time to rescue him and Joe. The poachers attempt to flee in the ensuing confusion.

A man and his daughter want to take a short cut through the bush and take an old logging road, only to get stuck in the snow. He heads back to town to get help while his daughter is left to freeze in the -30 degree cold. Luckily, McLeod is in the area to warm her up.

The Golden Crown mine is being re-opened for the first time since 1902. The mine has a reputation for being unsafe. Mike is the only one who sees a mysterious man clad in black waistcoat and top hat driving a horse and buggy and calling himself a doctor. The man repeatedly warns Mike that there will be a terrible accident at the mine. The doctor carries a pocket watch that plays The Skye Boat Song when opened. There is indeed an explosion at the mine which traps two men inside. The doctor appears and leads Mike to another entrance. The doctor goes inside while Mike summons help. Sgt Stewart and Sullivan save the trapped men, but there is no sign of the doctor. Sullivan found an old watch in the mine and gives it to Sgt Stewart who opens it at Mike's urging. The watch plays The Skye Boat Song.

Chub has bought a new guitar and is determined to play for his pop idol Rocky Webb. While practicing, Chub is unaware that his discords are being broadcast over every radio set in Indian River. Meanwhile, Rocky Webb and his Silver Spiders are appearing at a one-night stand in Chapman's Landing. But flooding causes the bridge on the only road to wash out, stranding the band in Indian River. The musicians set up their equipment at the fort, and Chub finally gets the chance for his big audition.
