Collateral Damage

He was sentenced in the killing of four Mounties. But, his story has never been heard. Until now. The Mayerthorpe tragedy occurred on March 3, 2005, on the farm of James Roszko, just north of Rochfort Bridge near the town of Mayerthorpe in the Canadian province of Alberta. Roszko shot and killed four Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He then committed suicide. The attack occurred as the officers were executing a search warrant for stolen property and a marijuana-growing operation on the farm. Two individuals who were not present at the shooting, Shawn Hennessey and Dennis Cheeseman, pled guilty to manslaughter for assisting Roszko to return to his farm.

Fighting in hockey, through the eyes of the people who know it best: the players. When Don Sanderson died in January after hitting his head on the ice during a hockey fight, a national debate erupted. On one side, those who argue that fighting debases what is already a fast, violent sport and imperils the lives of the players. But, there are those who argue that fighting actually makes the game safer, is a natural release valve and will always be a part of our national sport. Bob McKeown talks to some of the NHL's storied and current heavyweights: Marty McSorley, Nick Kypreos, and Georges Laraque, as well as Leafs' General Manager Brian Burke and two of the sports most knowledgeable and vocal commentators: Don Cherry and Bob McCown. And he talks to Don Sanderson's father, Mike, for whom this is no debate at all, but a tragedy.

Staying Alive

The federal government wants it shut down. The people who use it and who work there say it is saving lives. It is Insite, provincially-funded, and the first and only supervised injection site in North America where addicts can bring their drug of choice and, with the clean needles provided, can inject themselves. Insite's clients are some of the most desperate who live on Vancouver's downtown east side. Now, for the first time, cameras have been allowed inside the facility for an exclusive look at the place and the people. Follow Hana Gartner inside and make up your own mind about whether Insite is, as one federal politician has said, an "abomination", or whether there should be more of them in this country.

Cruel Camera (Update)

Twenty-five years ago, Bob Mckeown and a fifth estate crew stunned the country with an investigative report that showed that many of the wildlife documentaries we'd grown up watching on television (remember the famous footage of the lemmings going off the cliff or some of the memorable moments from shows like Wild Kingdom?) were staged for the television cameras. As well, they revealed that animals often died during the making of movies; all for the sake of the entertainment value. Now, Bob McKeown and an investigative team have returned to the subject to find out what has changed since the fifth estate's first Cruel Camera documentary. What they found may astonish you.
