Since they're minors, the law decides to go lenient on them, but the headmaster insists that they be put on probation for their actions, which includes working in the cafeteria. The girls have a rough time trying to work out their internal issues, especially Blair and Jo, who still don't see eye to eye with each other. When an ugly mêlée erupts between Jo and two other snobbish students, Blair steps in to back her up. It is here that Jo must learn who she is on the inside with Mrs. Garrett's guidance as she begins to ponder whether or not she really belongs in a prestigious school, where the students look down on her because of her upbringing.

While cleaning out Cynthia's room, the girls talk about the alarming statistic of teen suicides while Natalie comes up with the idea of Eastland instituting a suicide hotline to help other girls avoid the same fate.
