To stay together, Cissie moves her siblings into a cave. A bare stone shelter is all that protects Cissie Brodie and her brothers and sisters from the workhouse after their parents die in a cholera epidemic. Local carpenter Matthew is torn between Cissie and Rose. Cissie has a run-in with Clive and Isabelle, the adult children of a wealthy land owner.

As a result of her young sister Bella caught stealing handkerchiefs and threatened with sentencing and blackmail, Cissie ends up surrendering her baby to Lord Fischel. Rose's father, the miller, dies and Matthew inherits a tidy inheritance from the mill business.

Squabbles in the Fischel home leads to a confrontation between Clive's sister resulting in his sister's fatal fall from her horse. Cissie brings Richard back because he missed his life at the manor. Before Clive sets sail, he encourages her to move into the cottage he bought for her. They share a tender moment and he kisses her. She tells him to come home soon.
