Episode 1

Louisa decides to make money by selling produce at the local market, where she is not very successful but meets dashing Englishman Hugh Jarvis. A less welcome encounter is with abrasive new landlady Vasilia, who confiscates the furniture until the rent is paid. Louisa's solution is to create traditional British fare to sell and is grateful to Spiros for sharpening her sales technique. Gerry is more concerned with breeding otters whilst Margo, having failed to woo a young monk, considers becoming a nun. Louisa is charmed by Hugh but fears his interest in her is making ex-girlfriend Vasilia jealous and intent on making trouble for her.

Larry is delighted his novel has been accepted for publication but dismayed by his family's apathy as Margo is more interested in the sexy priest and Gerry is obsessed with adding to his menagerie. To make amends Louisa organizes a public reading but it is poorly attended though good reviews in the English press are the cause for a party, where everybody gets drunk on Leslie's home-made kumquat liquor. However Larry's latest manuscript is destroyed during the festivities and he decides to move to his own flat, leaving a despondent Louisa to be consoled by Hugh Jarvis.

Episode 3

Louisa goes to see Larry in his grim flat though he has another, carnal, visitor in Vasilia and almost misses his mother's birthday picnic. This is not a happy occasion as it makes her feel old and she starts to feel her age, dressing younger. Meanwhile Leslie decides to take up photography, Gerry parts company with his new tutor, having caused an accident and Vasilia has a proposition for Louisa. For all that a second picnic is a much more successful affair and Hugh is still keen to woo Louisa.

A storm engulfs the island, trapping the family, including the mumps-stricken Larry, in the house - along with the visiting aunt Hermione and her friend Mrs. Haddock, who claims to be a medium. Mrs. Haddock believes she can commune with Louisa's late husband and, against the boys' wishes, arranges a séance to see if he approves of her seeing Hugh. Larry, however, is determined to expose her as a fake and, helped by Theo, succeeds, leaving Louisa free to continue her romance with Hugh.

Larry is horrified when Vasilia demands he propose to her, while Gerald's new tutor Donald tries to impress Margo by being 'exotic'. Louisa feels that Hugh and the married Spiros are both vying for her attention, so she suggests a friendly cricket match between the Brits and the locals with Countess Mavrodaki as the umpire. The game quickly turns into a grudge match when Hugh's bowling knocks Spiros unconscious and a fight breaks out. Larry is relieved when Vasilia decides she wants to get back with Hugh - who startles Louisa with a proposition.

Louisa's English friend Florence, wife of local doctor Petrides, and Leonora, the daughter of the Durrells' domestic, Lugaretzia, are both heavily pregnant though Louisa is more preoccupied with Hugh's suggestion they return to England together. When Leonora goes into labour Larry runs for Dr Petrides but he is called out after the vengeful Vasilia wounds Hugh, leaving Leslie to be a reluctant but successful midwife and for Louisa to deliver Florence's baby. As the family gathers for the christening there are various surprises and Louisa makes her mind up about the Durrells staying on the island.
