While Doris wants to talk to Cy about a new office, or at least money so that she can remodel what is the literal broom-closet that is her existing office, Cy only wants to talk to Doris about taking the lead for a feature cover article on late night talk show host Bob Carter, who is basing his show out of San Francisco for a week. Cy has ulterior motives as he wants her to give him a plug to Bob to have him as a guest on the show so that he can demonstrate how good he would be as a news anchor in regaling about his time as a war correspondent. In meeting Bob, Doris sees an in for Cy when Bob laments the lack of quality guests. While Bob has no interest whatsoever in having someone like Cy as a guest on the show, Doris' suggestion twigs an idea in Bob's mind: Doris should interview Bob himself on his show. His suggestion turns into a three-way negotiation between Bob, Doris and Cy as what happens with Today's World and Bob Carter may have some effect on what happens with Doris' office.

Jewel thieves plant stolen gems on Mr. Jarvis, and when he and Doris discover what has happened, they head to the store to return the stolen loot. However, they wind up getting arrested and thrown in jail, where they meet the real thieves. Doris and Mr. Jarvis hatch a plan to expose the thieves and clear their names.

Jackie has won two tickets to Rome for the weekend. When her second, her mother, has to cancel at the last minute, Jackie is able to convince Doris to go to Rome with her, she definitely needing to be back in San Francisco by Monday for a meeting with Cy and a hot new artist named Benedetti. Once in Rome, Jackie and Doris each gets an impromptu tour guide of the male variety, Doris' being a suave Italian named Carlo, both who believe there was an immediate and undeniable connection between them that could be a forever connection. As such, Doris tries to convince Cy, who doesn't know she's in Rome and who she doesn't tell, to let her miss the meeting so that she can extend her vacation, Cy not allowing her to do so. Carlo, too, is trying to change his schedule to spend more time with Doris, he also having a meeting on Monday in the US. What neither of them know is that their two meetings are one and the same as he is Carlo Benedetti. Things get more complicated when Doris, learning that the paintings hanging in the restaurant where she and Carlo are dining are early Benedettis, criticizes them in hating them, not knowing that the person to whom she is making the criticisms is the sensitive painter himself.

For three years, Doris has planned a vacation to Mexico City, and every time she has been ready to go, something always kiboshes her trip. Indeed, Cy, this time, has volunteered her to take over organizing a charity ball in place of the committee comprised of Colonel Fairburn's scatterbrained sister Harriett, the chair, and her equally scatterbrained friends - "the girls" - Doris unable to say no to the Colonel, with Cy promising her an extra week vacation after it's all over. Doris discovers that they have hired an event planner, Roger Sidney, he only needing someone in authority proverbially to sign checks, that person being Doris. With Roger working harder than he planned, Doris looks as if she will be able to head off to Mexico City earlier than planned, with Roger even giving all the praise to Doris to an elated Colonel. But the praise for doing nothing gets Doris thinking that they are all in the process of being had by a scam artist unless she does something to stop it.

Doris is on assignment at Meadow Brook, a new upscale health spa in San Diego, so as to ambush a Mrs. Miggins for an interview, her husband, who five years ago, was convicted of a $2 million robbery, the money never recovered. The reason for the timing is that Harry Miggins himself is set to be released, and there is a possibility that he may try to contact his wife about the money. In an ultimatum to Cy, Doris brings along Angie who is in a time of crisis in her marriage in her weight gain. Doris getting the story is affected by Angie being at the spa to lose weight, and trying to sneak food when Doris isn't watching.

Doris' want to do a story on a bookmaking ring changes when she learns that Councilor Sam Appleton, who is running for reelection unopposed, is allowing such criminal activity to happen in being on the take. She wants to support a write-in candidate to run against Appleton, the perfect person in her and Cy's minds being someone who is meticulous to the core: Mr. Jarvis. They believe with the magazine's backing and they exposing Appleton's corruption and apathy, Mr. Jarvis could actually win. The question becomes how far Mr. Jarvis, Doris and Cy are willing to go to fight the dirty tricks of Appleton's campaign, or what they perceive to be his dirty tricks.

As much as Doris appreciates it, Angie, with respect to choosing someone even approximating Mr. Right for Doris, has so far batted zero for thirty-six, with number thirty-six, Charlie Dinzer, a plumber in town on a conference, arguably near the bottom of the pack. Angie, however, may have hit a home run with number thirty-seven, Nico, a Rome-based airline pilot. But Angie's matchmaking and Doris' work life begin to intersect as Doris and Cy are working on a time sensitive story regarding a couple of known killers holed up somewhere in San Francisco.

Cy is trying to seal the deal to reprint Sir Robert Kingsley's critically acclaimed book, After Normandy, in serialized form in the magazine, he sending Doris to London to deal with Sir Robert on the magazine's behalf. The reason Cy isn't handling the deal himself is Sir Robert's seeming reticence to the deal, despite the exposure and what Doris learns is the quite lucrative amount the magazine is offering. Doris and Sir Robert's initial meeting doesn't go quite the way as Doris had hoped in Sir Robert's rudeness, or so she thought as he eventually admits something to her which could not only affect the deal but her personal life.

Doris is trying to get an interview with Her Serene Highness, the Queen of Kurdiman while she and the King are in the United States, Doris specifically wanting to ask about the citizen uprising that seems to be taking place in their country. To get into see the Queen, Doris masquerades as a native wearing a harem-like costume. Coming out of the Queen's chambers, Doris is mistaken for the Queen herself by the rebels, who kidnap her and fly her to Kurdiman. It isn't until Doris arrives that the rebels discover their error. Wanting the revolution to be a bloodless one, the rebel leaders, Omar Tehrub and Colonel Ben-Ali, have to decide what to do with Doris to further their cause, while Doris too has to decide what to do to further their cause in wanting the same as them: for the King to abdicate so that Kurdiman can exist as a democracy.
