Blake soon establishes that Reg didn't drown where he was found and begins the hunt for the murder site, hoping that will reveal his killer. Meanwhile, Carlyle grills several suspects from the corrupt councilman to the aggrieved lover to bereaved family members. But it's only when Blake eventually finds the site of Reg's murder that the pieces begin to fall into place.

Meanwhile, Blake is distracted by a missing persons case which is looking more like a murder. Blake soon finds the answers in a place he least expects.

The body of sports reporter Terry Reynolds is discovered on the 18th hole at the local golf course by Superintendent Carlyle and Patrick Tyneman, as they finish a morning round of golf. Reynolds has enemies at the golf course and because of his articles in The Courier. Reynolds was hired by Edward Tyneman to push out Harvey Treloar, the sportswriter hired by his grandfather; Edward gave him a job with the presses themselves. He is one of many suspects, though he was thought by many to be the superior journalist. Clayton Richardson is questioned, as his alibi does not hold up, and he is often drunk. Jean reveals that Clayton lost his wife a year earlier. She had done the financial side of the company the couple ran successfully. Clayton does not grasp accounting, which is making trouble for the golf course. Blake confronts Alec Richardson, son of Clayton and a lawyer. Alec hit Reynolds with a ball from the pool table, then finished killing Reynolds when he collapsed in the sand trap. He is arrested. Rose helps to uncover the secrets Reynolds had amassed by transcribing notes in shorthand for the police; Reynolds was beyond sports topics when he blackmailed people so that he would not print embarrassing stories. Then she is called by a Melbourne paper, curious about how Edward is running his newspaper, why did he hire Reynolds and was Edward part of what Reynolds was doing. She makes a deal not to answer those questions and Edward Tyneman agrees to re-hire Treloar and to let Rose cover more than routine topics. Articles in The Courier about Mei Lin's return strain Blake and Jean's relationship.

For Whom the Bell Tolls

An investigation into what initially appears to be a routine suicide becomes personal when Cec Drury begs Blake to find out who really killed his younger brother, Rod. When it becomes clear he's dealing with a murder, Blake's investigation uncovers an insurance scam, a second murder and a dark secret at the heart of the Ballarat fire station and it's volunteer fire service. Meanwhile Jean may have discovered a secret about Mei Lin that will call into question everything she's told Blake since her arrival into their lives.

The Visible World

Tensions have reached boiling point between Doctor Blake and Major Alderton - Blake now knows Alderton has been using Mei Lin in a psychological game of cat and mouse against him. So when Alderton is found dead at Ballarat Observatory during a once in a century eclipse, and the police learn Blake was at the scene, and fled, the hunt for the killer turns back onto Blake himself.
