Joanna (Jenna Coleman) and Alistair (Ewen Leslie) are a young couple forced to face unthinkable circumstances under the white light of public scrutiny, changing their lives and their relationship forever. A young couple, Joanna and Alistair, travel from Scotland to Australia with their baby son Noah. They're going to Melbourne to see Alistair's mother, Elizabeth and to fight for custody of Alistair's fourteen-year-old daughter Chloe. Alistair's Australian ex-wife Alexandra, fled back to Australia with her daughter when she discovered Alistair was having an affair with Joanna. Joanna is struggling with life as a new mum and the flight to Melbourne is horrendous. Noah cries the whole way, to the dismay of their fellow travellers. Exhausted and emotional Joanna loses her temper, holding Noah out in front of her and yelling at the other passengers. Alistair wakes and comes to the rescue, but not before many of the passengers have formed an opinion of the type of mother Joanna must be. Another period in time and Joanna is being questioned by a psychiatrist. She appears in court, on trial for an unknown crime. Her friend Kirsty testifies. The couple finally arrive in Melbourne and make their way to their rental cottage in Wilde Bay, not far from Elizabeth's. Later, they drive to Elizabeth's for dinner, stopping at a convenience store on the way. Joanna joins Alistair in the shop for a moment, leaving Noah sleeping in the car and when they return their baby is missing.

As the police investigation ramps up, the world's media descends on the small town of Wilde Bay to report on the terrible and mysterious events of the previous night. The police begin to investigate Noah's abduction. The world's media descends on the small town of Wilde Bay. Alistair and Joanna are scrutinised as speculation spreads on social media as to their guilt or innocence. Chloe becomes obsessed by it, convinced someone will offer up a vital clue. Joanna creates a fake online identity and begins to take part in the debate. There is a growing body of circumstantial evidence which points towards Alistair's ex-wife Alexandra. Did she have something to do with Noah's disappearance? A bootie of Noah's is found in her house and she is finally arrested. Joanna has become increasingly haunted by the online bloggers. A trucker reports seeing the couple arguing by the road side the day Noah went missing. Alistair finds Joanna crouched on their bedroom floor. She looks up at him and says 'We need new rules'. He puts a finger to his lips and leads her out into the garden away from listening ears. We flashback to the convenience store on the night Noah disappeared. Alistair goes into the shop leaving Joanna in the car. She begins to count. Behind her, Noah's car seat is empty.

Flashing back to the day they arrived in Australia on the road from Melbourne to Wilde Bay, a distressed Joanna (Jenna Coleman) and Alistair (Ewen Leslie) try to work out what has happened, and we get closer to the truth. We flashback to Joanna and Alistair's journey from Melbourne to Wilde Bay on the day they arrived in Australia. We discover that Noah died in the car. Alistair convinces Joanna they should fake the child's abduction. His death was an accident - Joanna accidentally gave Noah a dose of Vicodin rather than Baby Calpol, but Alistair believes she will be charged with manslaughter and he will lose all hope of gaining custody of his daughter. The pressure of maintaining the lie begins to tear them apart. The police investigation closes in on them. Joanna wants to tell the truth but Alistair convinces her otherwise. The couple appear on television, recounting the tragic story of their missing child. Joanna discovers that Alistair has destroyed Noah's bib, the only thing she had left of him. She begins to realise she has succumbed to Alistair's manipulation for too long. She calls Kirsty and admits she killed her son but Kirsty thinks she's just punishing herself. Alistair is unravelling. The pressure of the police investigation and Joanna's increasingly uncontrollable behaviour has rattled him. He burns Noah's bib and goes to the police station to find out what they know. In the garden back at Elizabeth's Joanna demands to know where Noah is buried. Joanna tells Dr Wallace she was betrayed. We flash forward to the courtroom. Joanna is on the stand. She is being tried for her husband's murder.

Joanna wakes in hospital to discover she has been in a car crash and Alistair is dead. We flash back to Australia, where Joanna and Alistair are told the investigation is being wound down. They are free to return home to Scotland. Joanna begs Alistair to tell her where he has buried their son and eventually he takes her to a deserted beach and points to a large tree. Joanna falls to the ground in grief. The couple return home to Scotland where they attempt to rebuild their lives. Joanna returns to her job as a primary teacher but struggles to cope. Alistair meanwhile loses his job with the party. His notoriety is considered too damaging. The publicist, Jean-Louise offers Alistair a position with a charitable foundation for parents who have lost their children. Joanna is appalled. The couple grow further and further apart. Chloe and Elizabeth visit from Australia. Chloe tactlessly organises a celebration for Noah's first birthday. It's too much for Joanna and she flees. Joanna reads a letter from a woman she met on the plane to Melbourne. Her words trigger a long-forgotten memory of the day Noah died. Joanna asks Alistair to go for a drive with her and she challenges him over the truth of Noah's death. In court Joanna tells the jury about the accident as we flashback to the reality of what happened that day. Joanna is acquitted. She returns to Wilde Bay to try and find some peace and be close to her son.
