The long, hot summer has been bad news for the high street, so what's in store for the autumn? Four major retailers show the collections on which they're pinning their hopes. Black leather has always been the image of bikers, but is it now disappearing fast? A report from the Shell British Motorcycle Grand Prix. And with the school holidays over, there is a round-up of the essential accessories and also a colourful behind-the-scenes look at the costumes designed for last week's Notting Hill Carnival.

Many soccer teams are wearing new strip this season, which is all very chic for them, but what's the score for the fans who like to follow in their idols' shirtsleeves? Jeff Banks and Raj Dhanda lead the teams out of the tunnel into Wembley Stadium. With excerpts from The Desert Song, Selina Scott looks at the return of the old boot. Caryn Franklin investigates the chemistry of pharmacy fashion in Brixton, and there are accessories by Picasso.

In Holland they're celebrating 25 years of Europe's leading childrens wear label, and body adornment is big news at the tattoo Expo 89 in Dunstable. Barnsley, once a coal mine, is now a gold mine for a young menswear entrepreneur, and there's the best in creative black hairstyling at the Afro-Dizziac hair show.

A group of dinner ladies from Yorkshire are served the latest make-up colours by Barbara Daly. There's a report on what's in vogue in the clubs and the march of the mods - the parka is back.
