An interview confirms he has excessive expectations of extracurricular activities to get into Ivy League and considers Vincent a weakling. Meanwhile would be-novelist Zack Miller is frustrated as his part-time writing class instructor tells him to choose another calling for his limited writing talent, wife Dania, initially kept in the dark, encourages him to persevere.

Avi duly ignores captain Davies's formalistic criticism ad braves a formal witness complaint about alleged 'inappropriate familiarity' with Vincent's mother Nora from the hostile husband Leonard, whom she now finds the courage to scold a lousy family father, later admitting a crush on Avi. It becomes clear Vincent was deeply unhappy due to his non-supportive father, unpopular at school and used by a desired classmate to render her jock boyfriend jealous by his first-ever date. Zack Miller finally impresses his writing class with first person letters, which his wife Dania, who is close to Nora, finds spooky, realizing he based them on notes from Vince.

Avi believes Nora's resigned attitude means she knows her son is dead, and probably how.

Having abandoned the notion of Vincent's fugue, Avi returns to his home and gets the family to admit he accidentally hurt his head fatally when beaten by Leonardo, being caught masturbating near sister Olivia. Avi arrests Leonardo but senses that's not the whole story, and gets the women to admit a cover-up, as Leonardo was the pervert caught pats-down by his innocent son. Zach is off the legal hook, but his marriage shaky. The police ignores vandalism and a bomb threat at uncooperative Sarah Sowinsky's daycare center.

When Avi visits Paul Serra, his son Danny claims the alert, and attributes the bomb to his 'other father', which Paul claims doesn't exist. Earl focuses on Brad Holt, whose own wife doubts his reasons for running away from the site and returning there afterward.

Evidence all piles up about incompetent day care center manager Anna Harvey giving people motives for bomb alerts. An actual one explodes. Anna was found having sex with spineless father Brad Holt.
