During WWII, men and women working at Bletchley Park played a vital role, breaking the codes used by the German military. Nine years later, former codebreaker Susan is a housewife and mother, but she continues to recognize patterns that surround her in everyday life. When a series of women are brutally murdered around London, Susan sees a pattern emerging. However, when a police-search for what Susan believes to be an overlooked victim turns up nothing, she realizes she cannot solve this puzzle alone. Enlisting three former Bletchley Park colleagues: Millie, Lucy, and Jean; Susan knows they have little time to break this code before the killer strikes again.

During the war Alice Merren was one of Bletchley's brightest code-breakers. Now it is 1953. Lucy has a clerical job for Scotland Yard, Millie works as a German translator and Susan a housewife perturbed that her husband's promotion may take them overseas. Jean visits Alice in prison, awaiting trial for killing her old flame and Bletchley colleague John Richards. Jean is convinced of Alice's innocence and persuades her friends to investigate. They discover that John sent flowers to a young girl, Lizzie Lancaster and a search of her flat reveals she is in possession of a classified military file and a press cutting of an incident where military personnel were injured by a chemical experiment on Salisbury Plain. The women save Lizzie from a hit and run and Jean correctly assumes that she is Alice's daughter. The Bletchley circle believe both mother and daughter have been set up by John's killer who was also responsible for the Salisbury Plain incident.

And so the unnecessarily long goodbye begins for AMC's breakout, breakthrough signature series Mad Men, its final 14 hours being unconscionably broken into two halves over two years, starting Sunday at 10/9c. (Yes, it worked for Breaking Bad, but this isn't that kind of show.) While prolonging the inevitable, and potentially blunting whatever narrative momentum still exists in a most inelegant and desperate-seeming way, it's no wonder the often dazzling opening episode — titled "Time Zones," in a nod to the firm's now-bicoastal focus — is so preoccupied with time.

The Weekend Playlist: Maron on IFC, Diana Rigg on Doctor Who, Bletchley

"You're just not for everybody," comedic curmudgeon Marc Maron is told — by the more popular TV clown (at least among a comic-store backroom of Twitter nerds) Dave Foley, who plays a rather unflattering version of his real self, as does Maron, in IFC's new dark-side-of-laughter comedy series Maron (Friday, 10/9c). Sunnier than FX's Louie if only by virtue of being filmed in California, the sardonically squirm-inducing Maron alternates between slice-of-rant sitcom and self-obsessed podcast from the comedian's garage, where he vents on his unhappy personal life, his diarrhea-prone cats and his unruly, taunting Twitter following: "Who are these people? Don't they have lives?" You might well ask the same about Maron, although if he was happy (shades of Louie) there'd be no show.

Send questions and comments to [email protected] and follow me on Twitter! Question: I just read that Mike Kelley, the creator of Revenge, is leaving the show after this season. I will admit that this season isn't as good as the first, but it's OK. There are reports that Mike Kelley wanted shorter seasons, like on cable, with 13 episodes instead of the regular 22 moving forward. Since that wasn't going to happen, he left. What do you think? Do you think the show would work better with a shorter episode order? Also, if Kelley knew the show wouldn't work with longer seasons, why didn't he speak up the first season? Do you think someone else stepping in will freshen the show a bit? I will admit the time I started to take a step back and realize the writers were going too far was when they revealed Victoria had yet another child. Really?! Did you think the writers went overboard with that storyline in particular too? I also don't agree with the assertion that Scandal has replaced Revenge.
