When a pair of trousers covered in glass and fuel turns up in his wardrobe Simpson swears blind it's a fit up...and finally loses his cool. While the majority of the relief enjoy a laugh with Reg's lottery scheme, relations are not running so smoothly in CID. DC Eva Sharpe receives some bad news DS Debbie McAllister should have relayed to her earlier in the day. It couldn't be further from shake hands and make up time.

He's got his job cut out for him convincing Cass she's their secret star weapon and keeping Matt Boyden and Craig Gilmore from shedding blood on the pitch. While Matt's unrelenting homophobic comments cause the two sergeants to practically trade punches it's the young offenders that come under the spotlight during the game. After an old man is discovered dead in his council flat nasty rumours about his pedophile past mean Danny and Eva have their work cut out getting the truth out of the kids. Meanwhile Danny's in a crisis. He's got an interview with the MIT team and Des's career hangs in the balance while he decides whether or not to corroborate his story. Should he say he heard Simpson confessing to blowing up Sun Hill and killing some of it's finest officers, does the end justify the means? And CID doesn't get any calmer. With Danny in knots, Duncan still coping with his separation, Mickey and Jack still chasing the Superintendent's tail, a cat fight between DS Debbie McAllister is pretty much par for the course. And when Mr Chandler catches them swinging at each other, no holds barred, he has a word or two to say about it. Not before watching for a while though.

PC Tony Stamp takes young Gary out on the streets to track down a mysterious vigilante who's been beating up kids from the local Estates. His streetwise approach proves invaluable with the youngsters- but nothing he's got up his sleeve can prepare him for being stuck between DS Debbie McAllister and DC Eva Sharpe's game of one-upmanship. PCs Cass Rickman and Nick Klein head out for yet another night on the tiles but not before spying Harry Fullerton (Sun Hill's false confessor) gazing into his pint. Reg pays him a visit and offers some help but finds a sad old man who's moved on to regaling stories about the Falklands. Armed with an ecstasy pill in her handbag, Cass watches as Nick heads to the loos to 'powder his nose'. Sun Hill's resident clubbers are ready for a big one. But Cass discovers the darker side of clubbing when a friend collapses mid-conversation and her night ends in an ambulance ride.

After the horror of attending a suicide PC's Nick Klein and Cass Rickman go on to discover a couple of children playing in contaminated waste. It's just the tip of a toxic iceberg but Cass's mind is elsewhere. She's beside herself over the loss of her handbag. There was an 'e' loose in there, likely to be nestled right beside her warrant card. Inspector Gina Gold turns up for duty, (fag in hand) and takes no time to ruffle feathers. Not before stashing her bottle of whiskey and putting her ashtray in pride of place though. She makes it clear it's her show, she'll be running it, and anyone thinking differently had just better re-evaluate their position. Starting from the top down. Sun Hill's lottery syndicate with Mystic Reg at the helm gets underway. Superintendent Chandler catches the lads unawares and offers to join up. They don't want him in their gang and someone has to be the bearer of such glad tidings. It doesn't take much arm-twisting getting DC Mickey Webb to pass the bad news on...and with such relish. But that's not the end of it and Mickey picks Des's brain for more dirt in Chandler's past.

Could Marsden be the link Mickey and DCI Jack Meadows need to bring down Chandler once and for all? And true to form, young PC Gary Best decides to rekindle a romance with an ex-girlfriend, but will her new job come between them?

Luke is dragged into the Superintendent's office as the witness, with Gina's hopes pinned on his answer. Meanwhile Sgt Gilmore 's received an official complaint against the young PC but he feels compelled to help. After using his charm on a scared resident of a run down apartment block DC Ken Drummond makes headway into an arson investigation. Though while she describes a local criminal as the culprit the bigger picture looks like her greedy landlord is trying to smoke her out. The arson aspect makes Danny's work even more personal. Superintendent Chandler gets his chance show off the new CSU when a journalist offers to spend a day following a case. He decides TDC Brandon Kane's case of a father assaulting his teenage daughter's boyfriend is the one to follow. Brandon warns him off suggesting he follow another incident. He's about to discover the old adage "Any press is good press" isn't true in all cases. Two of Sun Hill's officers have gone AWOL and both are hunted fervently. The lottery syndicate numbers have come in but Reg is busy coaxing cats down from trees. The other, Debbie McAllister, is still away ill and Tom Chandler finds out the reason soon enough, and it couldn't be more detrimental to his precious career.

When he disappears out of view and another gunshot is heard Gilmore's worry appears more than professional. Cass convinces Nick that a good night out doesn't always have to involve drugs so he's surprised when he manages to pull an attractive young woman. After revealing she's a hairdresser, he carries on his fantasy by informing her he's a pilot. In the cold sober light of day it turns out they have a lot more in common than originally suspected. DS Debbie McAllister is coerced into a stint as a babysitter for Eva Sharpe's daughter when the childcare suddenly falls through. She surprises even herself by doing such a good job, which makes the decision facing her and Supt Tom Chandler even more difficult. Meanwhile PC Tony Stamp puts his neck on the line when young Lee Dwyer is accused of serious vandalism at his school. The head threatens him with expulsion but Tony intervenes and mediates between the two. But is Lee really so innocent and worthy of his trust?

After witnessing June and Jim's mug-hurling altercation he demands to know what their problem was. Jim's answer to healing the rift comes in the form of a quiet night out - and three choice little words. New PCs Luke Ashton and Kerry Young are called to a domestic incident at Lee Dwyer's house, so to teach his parents a lesson he plays runaway and visits a surprised Tony Stamp first thing in the morning.

While the syndicate members spend the millions over and over in their heads, Mickey heads off to tell Supt Tom Chandler where he can stick his job. Insp Gold, meanwhile, notes that Reg is acting quite out of character and avoiding the others. He wouldn't be planning to skip the country with the money, would he? When designer jackets go missing from a local department store and turn up on the local estate CID decide ex-con Joe Nash must be back up to his old tricks. But no-one can explain the mystery of the self-editing security tape. Sun Hill's romances are up and down. Jim's positivity about their relationship rubs off on June and they share a kiss while the other side of the coin sees Supt Tom Chandler dropping DS Debbie McAllister off at the abortion clinic leaving her to go through with the operation alone. And Lee Dwyer's parents arrive at Sun Hill to make a very serious accusation. One that will send PC Tony Stamp's reputation reeling.

It's an accusation that sends the team reeling and divides their loyalties when all the evidence points to his guilt. PC Jim Carver's position at CSU puts him in the awkward position of being appointed Lee's Family Liaison Officer. It leaves Tony wondering if anyone really is on his side. As PC Des Taviner so delicately puts it, "Where there's smoke there's fire", and PC Cathy Bradford's charming observation that, "Mud sticks". Cathy's on a roll with her canteen gossip and makes a bee-line to new PC Kerry Young's fiancé. She tries on her best seduction routine but when he shows no interest Cathy deviously spills the beans on Nick and Kerry's one night liaison. When father of teenage temptress Liz Chambers reports his daughter missing Brandon and Cass make enquiries. They pay a visit to her older boyfriend's house where they discover her bed isn't even cold. It seems he's not too worried about her disappearance when they find him shacked up with another teenager.

Cass is in trouble at every turn when PC Kerry Young discovers the rumour spreading that led to her engagement break up originated from Cass. Higher on Cass and Nick's priorities is dodging accusations of drug taking when DS Phil Hunter brings in their dealer. PC Jim Carver is still tasked with the unpleasant duty of being PC Tony Stamp's Family Liaison Officer. He assures the family that despite PC Stamp being 'one of his' they will continue a full and thorough investigation into the abuse accusation. Tony begins to doubt Jim's belief in his innocence and a covert meeting with DC Danny Glaze does nothing to improve his position. DI Alex Cullen is left fuming when the brutal murder of teenager Liz Chambers is handed over to Barton St. His anger gives way to dropping Jack Meadows a name from the superintendent's past, ex-DCI Marsden. Jack pays him a visit only to find one copper can't fool another. The road to Tom Chandler's destruction isn't as easy as they'd hoped it would be.

The relief attend a call to a protest outside a research laboratory involving a group of animal rights protestors. During the protest, Taviner gets a bit heavy-handed with a protestor who refuses to move back, and ends up dishing out a harsh beating. As the trouble continues, Young and Ashton are personally assigned to protect the head scientist. After discovering that he has received a number of death threats, the pair soon find themselves in the middle of a bomb scare. An official complaint is made against Glaze for his investigation into Tina Pope's bit on the side, while the protestor whom Taviner assaulted also makes a complaint. Cullen informs Chandler he has requested a transfer.

A spate of robberies are reported in the local area, and it is soon discovered that the culprit is impersonating Ackland in an attempt to get away with her crimes. Ashton attends a call to a domestic, and arrives to find himself intercepting a row between Gilmore and his boyfriend. As the chemistry between them increased, Young and Ashton out on a date. McAllister has no choice but to inform Meadows of her pregnancy when her bump starts to show. Rickman seduces a local journalist, Simon Kitson, but after one too many fears that she may have landed herself in hot water with the relief. An agitated Cullen continues to press Chandler for a transfer, but Chandler continues to block his move.

Glaze panics when his star witness, Tina Pope, disappears without trace, hours before she is due to appear in court, but fails to establish an obvious connection between Pope and murder victim Liz Chambers. Taviner is horrified when Hollis fails to show up for parade, and soon receives information from Simpson and his cronies that Hollis has been kidnapped. Taviner has no choice but to go it alone, in fear that sparking involvement from his fellow officers could result in his involvement in the firebombing being exposed. Rickman continues to be hassled by journalist Simon Kitson. On his last day at Sun Hill, Cullen pulls a fast move and convinces Lennox to join him in a new job with MIT.

Glaze continues to struggle to keep his mind in the right place with the stress of the impending trial hanging over him, but is left speechless when Tina Pope is found murdered on the bank of the Thames. Taviner's conscience gets the better of him, and he is forced to confess to Gold and Meadows that Hollis has been kidnapped and with Jeff Simpson's trial about to begin, he ponders whether or not to confess about his falsified evidence in light of the situation. Gilmore is upset to discover that Ashton is dating Young, however, his upset is quickly overturned when he shares an unexpected kiss with Ashton following a result. Lennox celebrates his final day at Sun Hill before transferring to MIT.

McAllister investigates a complaint of threatening behaviour, in which a woman has reported being harassed by one of her neighbours. As usual, she takes a less than tactful approach and threatens to blow up a volatile situation with her attitude. On her first day at Sun Hill, Samantha Nixon discovers a link between the murders of Liz Chambers and Tina Pope, and begins to suspect a serial killer is on the loose in Sun Hill. Glaze's mind is all over the place, and during his day in court, he refuses to corroborate Taviner's falsified story under oath. However, the pair have a lucky escape, as before Glaze can provide his testimony, Jeff Simpson changes his plea to guilty of all charges.

Hunter receives a tip-off which suggest that drugs are being peddled through a local nightclub, so he decides to set up an undercover operation in the club with Klein at the helm. In light of Cullen's transfer to MIT, the job of acting inspector is offered up, and McAllister is certain that she will get the job, having been at Sun Hill much longer than her fellow counterparts. However, an impressed Meadows offers Nixon the job. Chandler's father turns up begging for money for his drug-addicted brother. Ashton, Young and Gilmore investigate a suspicious RTA, where the driver of the car fled the scene, in fear of being found in possession of cannabis. Ashton and Young get intimate.

Klein's role undercover in the nightclub comes into jeopardy when he is forced to take cocaine to retain his cover, and little does he know the whole escapade has been caught on tape. Hunter is warned that he is putting Klein's safety at risk and is asked to keep an eye on the situation. Hollis and Stamp attend a call to investigate bizarre events at a local almshouse, where residents are complaining of incidents of criminal damage. Gilmore is furious when Young and Ashton are late for shift, having spent the night together. Realising that they are close to bringing Chandler down, Webb and Meadows begin their search for Anne Merrick, but are warned to stay well away by her daughter.

Events at the almshouse take a bizarre turn and Carver and Ackland are tasked with investigating a murder. However, their own personal relationship begins to cloud their judgement over the involvement of their prime suspect, and the pair are soon at loggerheads. As the undercover operation in the club intensifies, Best and Ashton are given the opportunity to join the team, but Ashton blows an initial first interview with the club's manager, leaving Best to pick up the pieces. Klein is forced to prove to Rickman that he hasn't regained his old habits. Webb and Meadows finally manage to track down Anne Merrick, Chandler's girlfriend at Hendon, but receive a nasty surprise when they interview her.

After a raid on the club fails to undercover any vital evidence on the main players, Meadows demands a result from Hunter and gives him just 48 hours to secure the required evidence. However, with Best now out of the picture, it's up to Klein to gather the vital evidence, but his judgement is badly affected when his continued use of cocaine begins to take its toll. Hunter realizes he has no choice but to try and set up a deal himself to save Klein's skin. Stamp and Best are called to attend to a pair of feuding neighbours who are arguing over a dog. As Webb tries to find out more about what happened to Chandler during the party at Hendon, Meadows warns him to keep any information he uncovers to himself.

But as Mickey and the others race up to Chandler's office, the gun is fired.

An upset Klein trawls the shoreline for Rickman's body and collapses in tears when he finds her washed up on the riverbank. Forensics manage to link Rickman's DNA to a car belonging to Kitson's sister, and he is detained for questioning.

Simon Kitson is charged with Rickman's murder, but after a visit from his obsessive sister, and pressure from Klein, manages a snap decision. Ashton tells Gilmore that his boyfriend is HIV-positive.

Gilmore tells his HIV-positive boyfriend that their relationship is over. The son of Gold's old adversary provides information on the planned robbery, but Gold soon realizes that she has been conned.
