The Greek Nick Adonidas has gone to Gibson's Landing, an insignificant harbor town. He owns a small ship and holds a license to rescue Strandgut. Nick lives with Molly, who raises her grandchildren Hugh and Margaret. Everyone helps Nick with his hard work. But that's now in jeopardy: Nick's license is invalidated by the ministry.

Nick and band chief Moses Charlie are worried about the restlessness of many of especially the young unemployed men in Chief Moses' band, that restlessness which has most recently been manifested in a scuffle on the pier between two of them, Clancy and George, and Hugh, over nothing. Chief Moses is further concerned about Jesse turning his back on his aboriginal heritage. Chief Moses believes he has something at least to focus their collective attention: to refurbish the never used long canoe and to form a ten man racing team captained by Jesse. The questions not only include the obvious issues of if they can find ten men and if they can find a team to race against, but if those ten can come together under Jesse's leadership truly to be those proverbial comrades in arms that is Chief Moses' goal.
Episode 10
Independently of each other, both Colonel Spranklin and Relic and McLoskey believe they have spotted a sea serpent. While one is interested in the animal only scientifically interested and would like to take pictures, the other two promise of a catch - or a killing - of the monster a fat reward.

Once again, logs have to be removed. A friend has put a flea in the ear of Jesse, and he wants this time - against Nick's advice - use it dynamite. The explosive effect is huge, Jesse is trapped by a trunk.

Without telling her family beforehand, Margaret has dropped out of her French class at school, her outward reason not seeing the point in learning a second language hiding the true reason. She may regret her decision when Nick brings a handsome young stranger he picked up hitchhiking into The Reach, he to who she is immediately attracted. He is francophone Paul De Sault, a sailor who was just dropped off on the mainland and who is looking for his aunt. She just happens to be Margaret's French teacher, Mme. De Sault. As Nick and Margaret take him to Mme. De Sault's recreational property on Madonna Island where she usually stays for the weekend, none of Nick, Rae and especially Margaret, as she is the one on who they are relying, fully understanding French may have potentially disastrous consequences.

An unpleasant birthday surprise awaits the little Sara: Her Indian aunt Rita has set her mind to finally take her "home" to the reserve.

Canada's just nuclear submarine is engaged with strange war recreations and a UFO chase and Nick and the Persephone are gotten in the center.
