After Barney's embarrassment at mistaking Opie's imaginary horse Blackie for real, both Andy and Barney take Opie's announcement of a man he met in the woods as imaginary, too, especially when described as walking atop trees, jingling as he strides, blowing smoke from his ears, carrying twelve extra hands on his belt, and wearing a big, shiny silver hat. Andy's problem comes when Opie starts bringing home gifts from his supposed imaginary friend. Opie refuses to deny Mr. McBeevee's unprovable existence, even in the face of corporal punishment for not being able to distinguish fact from falsehood, becoming a crisis in parenting for Andy.

Andy's Rich Girlfriend

Andy and Barney take Thelma Lou and Peggy out to eat at 'Mom's Diner' then to the lake to skip rocks and wade in the water. Peggy asked Andy if he brings all of the new girls there. After the evening is over, Andy takes Peggy home they make plans for another date. Andy shows up to Peggy's house the next morning and sees a brand new car parked in front of her house. Peggy tells him her father sent it to her. Andy asks if her father is well-to-do, Peggy tells Andy that her father owns the R&M Grain Elevators in Raleigh. Andy tells Barney that Peggy comes from a wealthy family and Barney tells Andy that Andy is going to have to give up Peggy. To nip it in the bud, because she is only going out with Andy for kicks, because he is ordinary. Andy decides to still take Peggy out and takes her to a fancy French Restaurant, 55 miles away in Raleigh. While there, Andy learns a little more about Peggy and all the places she's been and experiences she has had. Andy starts to feel uncomfortable and after the date is over, Andy tells Barney he was miserable. Andy decides to avoid Peggy, leaving Peggy miffed.

Andy and the New Mayor

Roy Stoner has just been elected Mayor of Mayberry. He and Andy get off on the wrong foot when Andy shows up late to a meeting the Mayor had scheduled. While Mayor Stoner is visiting the Sheriff's Office, he learns that Andy is releasing a prisoner, Jess Morgan, before his sentence it up. Andy tries to explain to the Mayor that Jess has to get home and harvest his crops before they spoil. Mayor Stoner insists that Jess Morgan stays in jail until his sentence for moonshining is up. After the Mayor leaves the courthouse, Andy lets Jess go and makes him promise to be back in three days. Once the Mayor discovers that Jess Morgan isn't in the jail, he demands that Andy goes with him to Jess Morgan's house to go get Jess.

Andy and Opie - Bachelors

With Aunt Bee away visiting relatives for three or four days, Opie and Andy are left to fend on their own. Andy's new girlfriend Peggy offers to stop in and help out, but Andy says it's not necessary. Floyd the barber overhears the conversation and warns Andy that, if he's not careful, Peggy will soon be taking over and making herself indispensable; once that happens, wedding bells won't be far behind. Sure enough, the first night Peg shows up, she cooks them a fabulous dinner and tucks Opie into bed. Remembering what Floyd told him, Andy sets about avoiding her until he realizes that they are both adults and no harm can come from one friend helping another.

The Cow Thief

Two local farmers have had cows stolen from their property and Mayor Stoner doesn't think that Andy and Barney are capable of solving the crime, so he sends for an expert from the state capital. While Andy isn't too disturbed, Barney thinks they should just refuse to cooperate with the expert. When the state's expert, William Upchurch, shows up, he soon has Barney eating out of his hand. Mayor Stoner is also impressed with his investigative skills, particularly when he deduces from the footprints at the scene that a gang of three men have been stealing the cows. Andy has been keeping his eye on a recent parolee, Luke Jensen, a known thief who has just returned to Mayberry. Andy is also interested in the footprints that have so impressed the mayor, particularly the fact that certain prints are obviously missing.

Barney Mends a Broken Heart

Andy shows up to Peggy's house for a date, only to find a strange man answering her door. Peggy's old classmate, Don, dropped in on her unannounced on his way to Miami. Andy gets upset that Peggy has to break their date and storms off to the courthouse to vent to Barney. After Andy leaves the courthouse, Barney takes it upon himself to try and find Andy another girl to get his mind off of Peggy.

Floyd the barber is aghast when he receives a letter from his lonely hearts club pen pal telling him that she is going to stop by Mayberry and visit him on her way to Florida. Floyd has been less than honest with the lady, Madelyn Grayson, telling the rich widow that he too is well-off. He's ready to leave town when Andy suggests that they can set up a bit of ruse and have Floyd pose as a rich man. Using someone's house, Floyd dons a smoking jacket and with Aunt Bee as his maid - and Andy and Opie as his sons - they welcome Madelyn to Mayberry. Things start to unravel quickly however when Madelyn invites herself to stay for a few days but before Andy can explain it all to her, she has some interesting revelations of her own.

Opie's Rival

Opie enjoys his time together with his father, especially when they go fishing, but when Andy suddenly invites his new girlfriend Peggy to join them, Opie feels that their relationship is threatened and sets out to end his father's relationship with Peggy. Just as Andy is about to go out on a date one evening, Opie feigns sickness and forces Andy to call Peggy and break the date. When she asks Opie the next day if he is still sick, he says he wasn't sick the night before. Opie then mislays a message Peggy leaves for his father, with the result that she thinks Andy is avoiding her. It's Opie in the end who has to make things right between them.

Convicts-at-Large

Floyd and Barney are on a fishing trip just outside of Mayberry. Set to head home, they realize Floyd's car is out of gas so they search for some at the nearest cabin by the lake. That cabin just so happens to be where three female escape convicts have taken shelter. Once inside the cabin, the convicts get Barney's gun and bullet away from him and hold Barney and Floyd hostage.

The Bed Jacket

As Aunt Bee's birthday approaches, she makes a point of telling Andy that she doesn't want anything frivolous as a gift. Soon after, however, she sees a bed jacket in a local store window and hints broadly to Andy what she thinks of it. It takes a tip from Bee's friend Clara, however, to get him on the right track. Unfortunately, the Mayor has just bought the last bed jacket for his wife, but he's ready to extract a high price from Andy to sell it to him - namely, Andy's favorite fishing rod.

The Bank Job

Barney questions the level of security at the Mayberry Security Bank but no one will apparently listen to him. The elderly guard, Asa, is asleep on a chair most of the time and his gun is as old as he is. The manager takes no interest in Barney's suggestions and Andy is no different. Barney decides to show them how insecure it all is by dressing as a cleaning woman and staging a hold-up. The bank manager and his teller are soon onto him and in the confusion, Barney locks himself in the safe. He manages to get out by kicking a hole in the back wall, but when real bank robbers try to hold up the bank, they all think it's Barney trying to make his point yet again.

One-Punch Opie

There's a new boy in town, Steve Quincy, and Opie seems to have become the object of his ridicule, being called Dopie and the like. Steve talks tough and tells Opie that, if he doesn't like it, he should do something about it. Opie backs down but soon Steve leads the other boys down the path of delinquency by stealing from the grocer's stand and breaking a street lamp. Andy is concerned and gives the boys - minus Steve who refused to see him - a severe tongue-lashing, but it's left to Opie to confront Steve, who isn't as tough as he's made himself out to be.

Barney and the Governor

When the Governor's chauffeur parks the Governor's car in a No Parking Zone in front of the Post Office, Barney issues a ticket. Actually, he didn't realize it was the Governor's car until well into to the process and he then refused to back down. Mayor Stoner, outraged to hear what he has done, insists that Andy call the Governor's office and apologize. The Governor is in fact delighted that someone had the gumption to ticket his car and tells Andy and the Mayor that he will stop by Mayberry that very afternoon to congratulate Barney and shake his hand. One problem: no one tells Barney, and when he hears the Governor is coming to Mayberry, he assumes the worse and that he's finished.

Man in a Hurry

A businessman's car breaks down two miles from Mayberry on a Sunday. He has a business appointment in Charlotte the next morning. He walks to town and finds it deserted until church lets out. The garage is also closed on Sunday. Gomer is working but can only pump gas and Wally refuses to repair the car until Monday. The stranger can't believe the pace of life in Mayberry and everyone's lack of urgency. Andy tries to talk him into spending the night and getting the car fixed on Monday. He will hear of no such thing...at first.

High Noon in Mayberry

Andy receives a letter from an ex-con whom he shot in the leg, years ago, in a gas station robbery attempt. The ex-con has lost most of the function of that leg and writes that he is coming to Mayberry to set things straight. Barney assumes the worst. When Andy won't take a vacation or at least carry a gun, Barney deputizes Gomer and Otis to keep watch and protect Andy 24 hours a day.

The Loaded Goat

A local construction crew is blasting for an underpass near Mayberry. The rumor is that the mayor wants to bring the highway past his brother's gas station. A farmer brings his goat uptown, partly to experience his weekly shopping trip and partly because the blasting makes the goat nervous. The goat frees its tether from a bench on Main Street and wanders into a storeroom, where it eats half a case of dynamite. Andy and Barney treat the goat with kid gloves and place him in Otis's cell. The fun starts when Otis lets himself into the locked jail using his own key and kicks the goat out of "his" cell.

Class Reunion

While moving some of Barney's belongings into his garage, Andy comes across their old high school yearbook. The two reminisce about those days and soon Andy suggests they organize a class reunion. For Andy, the object will be to reunite with his old high school sweetheart, Sharon DeSpain. They were quite an item for several years, but after graduation she moved away and now lives in Chicago. Barney also hopes to see his old flame, Ramona, though he becomes concerned about a possibly jealous husband when he hears that she is now married. Andy's reunion is bittersweet, for while they are still attracted to one another, it also becomes obvious why nothing ever happened between them. For Barney, Ramona's reaction isn't at all what he expected.

Rafe Hollister Sings

Barney prepares for the Ladies League singing contest. The winner gets to represent Mayberry in their musicale. The problem: he can't sing. When farmer Rafe Hollister shows up at the courthouse, it turns out Rafe has an exceptionally good voice. Andy encourages him to go and try out for the competition, which he wins handily. Mayor Stoner and Mrs. Jeffries (the head of the Ladies League) are aghast, however, at Rafe's appearance and want Andy to break the news to him that he can not represent Mayberry at the musicale. Unable to bring himself to do so, Andy decides the only option is to try and make Rafe a bit more presentable.

Opie and the Spoiled Kid

Mayberry is having a bit of a problem with a new boy who continually rides his bike on the sidewalks and knocks people over. The boy, Arnold Winkler, has just gotten his new bicycle, and for Opie it's a beauty. Actually, Opie thinks Arnold, who has just moved to Mayberry with his family, is the luckiest kid around. He not only has a new $70 bike but gets a much bigger allowance and doesn't have to do chores to get it. He thinks Opie is a sap and mentors him on how to be a problem child to get what he wants out of his parents, like stomping your feet, holding your breath and pretending to cry. When Opie tries it on Andy, it doesn't get him very far. When Andy and Barney impound Arnold's bike for again riding on the sidewalk, they get a visit from the boy's father, who soon comes to realize just how selfish and arrogant his little boy is.

Aunt Bee's Medicine Man

The sudden death of Augusta Finch, an acquaintance her own age, puts Aunt Bee in touch with her mortality. While listlessly walking home (otherwise irascible), she comes upon the charismatic and charming Colonel Harvey, an engaging street huckster hawking a cure-all elixir that improves the quality of life. She's so taken with him and his smooth spiel that she buys two bottles and invites him over for a home-cooked meal. Soon after, Andy and Barney, too, meet the man but find him suspicious, even though his paperwork is in order. By the time Barney gets Andy home, though, Bee's at the piano having a good old time singing songs loudly with Opie (and a little unsteady on her feet). If it was anyone else they'd say she was tiddly. That's when Barney finds a half-empty bottle of elixir, in which testing later reveals a high alcohol content. Andy now has cause to arrest Colonel Harvey, but he must tread carefully so that Aunt Bee will see the flimflam man for what his is and not be heartbroken, disbelieving, unforgiving and spiteful when they arrest him. As Colonel Harvey will be speaking to Bee's Ladies Aid Church Committee, a raid is just the answer.

The Darlings Are Coming

The musical Darling Family - father Briscoe, daughter Charlene and four laconic-to-a-fault sons - show up in Mayberry to collect Charlene's fiancé, 'Dud' Wash, a soldier arriving on the bus the next day. The family patriarch rents a single room and sneaks in the rest of the family. Andy is soon at the hotel trying to figure out what to do with them. The Darlings are a good family and aren't really troublemakers, so Andy agrees to let them stay the night at the courthouse. The real problem, however, is that daughter Charlene takes a real shine to Andy and goes after him with a vengeance. She hasn't seen Dud for a while and isn't sure what her feelings are about him. Dud's arrival, however, sets everything straight.

Andy's English Valet

Malcolm Merriweather, a visitor from England cycling through Mayberry, causes around $40 worth of damage. Unable to pay restitution, Andy is about to jail him when he gets an idea. Merriweather had mentioned that he worked as a valet, a gentleman's gentleman, and with Aunt Bee away he asks Malcolm if he would like to live at his house and take care of him and Opie. Malcolm gladly accepts and soon, he has Andy and Opie taking mid-week baths and dressing for dinner. He even drives Andy to work in the morning. When he hears Andy agree with Barney that it's all just a bit crazy, Malcolm's feelings are hurt and he decides to leave.
Episode 27
Barney's First Car

After deciding to buy a car for the first time, Barney sees an ad in the paper that appears to be just what he's looking for and, when the seller comes to Andy's house, he's more convinced than ever that he's found the right vehicle. The seller is a little old lady who claims her husband has recently died, leaving her to find a new owner for his car. She assures Barney that the car was only ever driven at low speed and that it just breaks her heart to sell it. Andy advises caution and suggests that he have Wally the mechanic give the car a once over, but Barney won't hear of it. The charming, innocent-looking old lady has poor, gullible Barney wrapped around her finger so tight that he even overpays for the car. Not surprisingly, the car breaks down the next day when he takes it out for a drive in the country with Thelma Lou, Andy, Opie, Aunt Bee and Gomer. When Gomer takes it to the filling station to have Wally check it out, he finds a whole laundry list of defects, including sawdust in the transmission, used to keep it running smoothly for a few days and a sure sign that he was sold a lemon. When the car breaks down a second time, Andy and Barney soon find out exactly what that old lady and her secret gang of con artists have been up to.

The Rivals

Opie feels the first pangs of puppy love when he takes a liking to one of his classmates, Karen. He keeps asking to do things for her, like walking her home or taking her to the movies or carrying her books, but she doesn't seem to have much of an interest. He's pretty down in the dumps when Thelma Lou sees him, so she invites him home to make brownies. Soon, Opie is referring to her as his girl and getting to spend more time with her than Barney. As Barney starts to chafe, Karen, whom Opie hasn't paid attention to for a while now, starts to realize that she may like to spend some time with the boy after all.

A Wife for Andy

After watching Andy fix up Opie's scraped knee, Barney decides the time has come for the sheriff to take a wife. Andy asks him - actually begs him - not to interfere with his life, but Barney just can't help himself. His first trick is to invite all the single women to Andy's house so that Andy can look them over. Andy won't hear of it and has Barney ask them to leave. The next trick is to arrange a dinner at Thelma Lou's for Andy and Helen Crump, Opie's teacher. Chatting before dinner, Barney decides Helen's not suitable when she says she can't cook and won't be quitting her teaching job should she ever marry. Barney wants to keep looking but Andy and Helen hit it off pretty well and have a date for the next night. Barney has other ideas.

Dogs, Dogs, Dogs

When Opie finds a stray dog, he takes it to the courthouse. They decide to feed the animal and it particularly likes Barney's lunch. Andy gives Opie permission to keep the dog but it escapes and returns to the courthouse with some of its friends. Barney is concerned with all of the animals being there since a State inspector is coming to town to check out the jail facilities and decide on their request for funding. Every time they get rid of the animals, however, they seem to return in even greater numbers. Sure enough, the courthouse is full of animals when the inspector calls - which, as it turns out, is a pretty good thing.

Mountain Wedding

Mountain man Briscoe Darling comes to Mayberry to get Andy's help. It seems that one Ernest T. Bass has taken a shine to Darlene and refuses to accept that she's now married to Dud Wash. Since Andy married Charlene and Dud, the patriarch of the Darling clan wants Andy to do something about it. When they finally meet Ernest T., he tells them that a marriage isn't valid if it isn't performed by a preacher. With a second preacher wedding thus planned for the next day, Ernest says he has 24 hours to try and court the girl of his dreams. When Charlene turns him down, he opts to kidnap her before the ceremony can be completed, but Andy and the Darlings have a bit of a surprise for him.
Episode 32
The Big House

When State police arrest two of four bank robbers, they decide to keep them in the Mayberry jail. As Andy is to join the search for the remaining two criminals, he agrees to Barney's suggestion of deputizing a third man to work for them, but without consulting him, Barney hires Gomer. Andy isn't convinced he can do the job but gives in to Barney's assurances that all will be okay. The two experienced criminals have Barney right where they want him, and it's only thanks to Andy that they're kept from escaping - twice. When State policemen set a trap for the two remaining criminals, Barney puts his foot in it again when he arrests the policemen.
