A member of the KGB Institute to defect to America and FBI Agent Stan Beeman is in charge of protecting her. An armed Oleg confronts Stan in an alley to answer for Nina. Philip meets with the Afghan chief, Yousef after he and Elizabeth help him to cover up Annalise's murder. Elizabeth and Philip reunite with Gabriel, who senses the new closeness in their marriage and also the tension. Elizabeth confides in Gabriel about her feelings regarding Paige and the Centre/KGB; Paige has definitely shown a decided interest in political causes since she somehow became involved with the church and youth ministry. Nina gets both a Belgian cellmate and an unexpected Russian visitor. Elizabeth is upset about the list of CIA Afghan names lost in her skirmish with Agent Aderholt and Chief Gaad of the FBI. Determined to repossess the CIA Afghan list, she persuaded Philip to order Yousef to call a meeting, causing Philip and Elizabeth to engage in risky surveillance.

Open House

Philip and Elizabeth attend an open house at property belonging to the one Gabriel and they assess the "weakest" from the list of CIA Afghans, Paaswell. Philip is able to gain valuable intelligence at the open house. Doing car surveillance, the pair realizes they are being followed. The passenger, Philip, is able to tuck, roll and escape but the driver, Elizabeth, is less able to manoeuver. To evade detection, Elizabeth must evade a rolling surveillance team of 11+ FBI agents. Zinaida speaks out about Russia, the death of Brezhnev, KGB, politics and the war in Afghanistan.

Paige gets baptized and Stan sleeps with the ditzy woman he met at EST. An old FBI partner of Stan is killed in action and he turns to his wife for comfort, but gets little. Gabriel has news for both Elizabeth and Philip. First, Irina was caught in Brazil and her son, also Philip's son, is a soldier in the Russian army in Afghanistan. Also Gabriel tells Philip he must be "intimate" with Kimmy, the girl who pretended to be 18, but is actually, only 15 like Paige, his daughter so they can have weekly access to her father's study. He tells Elizabeth to follow a college student who fell into the radar of Hans, the young man Elizabeth has been training and grooming; Gabriel says Hans has good instincts. The young man Hans followed met with a solid lead into the anti-apartheid movement in D.C., which the Centre hopes will destroy our beloved President Reagan. In Russia, Nina betrays her cellmate Evi and enjoys a steak dinner.

Walter Taffet

Elizabeth brings Paige to Kenilworth and tells her that she and Philip were hard core civil rights activists when they were first married; she tells him their friend Gregory lived there and was murdered by police. Paige is very impressed and Philip is angry with Elizabeth. The new black FBI agent who always questions Stan (& who Stan dislikes) finds the bug in the pen Martha placed in Chief Gaad's office; Martha tries to deactivate her transmitter. OPR agent Walter Taffett comes in to investigate and sweep the department. Elizabeth, Philip, a highly valued South African black freedom fighter named Ncgobo and Hans get ready to execute a dangerous mission to grab the student and Venter, the one who was sent to stir up the anti-apartheid issue. Clark senses there is something "off" with Martha but he does not know what it is. The mission to grab Venter and student is successful; but the experience leaves the lookout, Hans, feeling like he stepped out of a dream choreographed by Fleetwood Mac.

Philip and and Ncgobo try to extract information from an uncooperative Venter and Elizabeth deals with the student, Todd. Nina is "rewarded" for helping the KGB get Evi's confession with a sentence reduced to 10 years; however, if she can turn the defected and recovered scientist, Anton Baklanov, she will gain her freedom. Taffet of OPR (the Office of Professional Responsibility) continues its sweep and investigates Martha and the black agent, Aderholt as Stan flies to Chicago to mourn his dead comrade. Ncgobo wants to be the one to kill Venter and Todd is forced to watch one of the most brutal executions in history. Arkady receives a phone call from Oleg's father. Nina settles into her new assignment at the facility where Russian scientists are working on Arpanet and she meets the old boss she betrayed, who is in charge. Philip and Elizabeth work hard to convince Ncgobo to let Todd live once he comes clean with what he knows about Venter. Taffet accuses Gaad of negligence in allowing the bug to be planted.

Elizabeth discharges Hans because she thinks Todd saw him at the Venter killing, so Hans gets rid of the threat so he can continue working with Elizabeth. Philip divulges Martha knows Clark is not who he claimed to be but Philip trusts Martha not to talk. They talk to Gabriel about the Martha Operation and the FBI mail robot. Elizabeth and Philip visit the shop where the mail robot is taken for repair to obtain intel. When the elderly wife of the original owner comes in unexpectedly, Elizabeth chats with her and the old lady realizes Elizabeth is going to kill her. Visibly upset at having to kill her, Elizabeth makes her death painless with a drug overdose and she talks with her, reassuring her as she dies. Stan and Oleg continue on their own operation to save Nina. Philip has a very truthful Scrabble game with Gabriel.

Stingers

Stan and other agents accompany the FBI defectee to "Tootsie" and she plants Intel in the Ladie's. Philip has to break away from a family dinner to be Jim and hook up with Kimmy; he recovers a tape with critical intel for the Centre. Elizabeth and Philip check out a hotel where Muhajideen are expected to stay; Elizabeth makes yet another conquest. Yousef is traveling to the U.S. to meet with Philip. Henry starts to bond with Stan and Paige confronts her parents. Paige asks whether her parents are in "witness protection" and/or why the family is not normal. Arkady and others at the Rezidentura get a note from "Willow," the FBI defectee. When her parents finally tell her the truth about their heritage and their real jobs, Paige may not be able to deal with the ramifications.
