Two years have passed and Alison has to talk Joe down from the school roof after he has discovered that he is autistic and thinks it a bad thing but will say no more. Rebecca returns from abroad with boy-friend James, who has an idea for Alison and Paul to get through to Joe but the little boy climbs onto the roof again - resulting in Alison attending a support group and suggesting special schooling. Eddie and Nicola have separated but pretend they are still together when her parents Grace and Vincent turn up, announcing their own divorce though Vincent works out the younger couple's deception.

Alison and Paul drive a confused Joe to Manchester and Pear Tree special school, which he appears to like, but back home Paul is concerned for barmaid Sophie and her damaged son Mark. Maurice, against Louise's wishes, employs her Downs Syndrome son Ralph at the brewery but is baffled when she rejects his advances and then makes a confession. Eddie, now living in Manchester, agrees to put Joe up but has an admission for Nicola whilst Rebecca is equally candid with James.

Against her wishes Maurice accompanies Louis to her chemotherapy but she is irritated by his overly concerned attitude. Ultimately he tells Alison about Louise's illness. Alison is staying with Joe at Eddie's Manchester flat, where they meet his forthright new girlfriend Holly, whilst Paul, after comforting Rebecca, dumped by James, accompanies Sophie and Mark to a gig. Afterwards he makes a clumsy play for Sophie, which she rejects, but he still tells Alison on her return.

Sensing something wrong between her parents Rebecca arranges for them to spend a weekend alone at Eddie's flat whilst she, Nicola and Eddie mind Joe. Alison quizzes Paul on his confession, leading to a reconciliation of sorts whilst also expressing her wish to take a university course. Louise comes to appreciate Maurice's concern, especially after he has lost a fell race by sitting down to work out his feelings for her whilst Eddie seems to be connecting again with Nicola, a fact not unnoticed by Holly.

Paul is annoyed that Nicola has filmed Joe to present at a symposium on autism, feeling that it turns his son into a freak show. He is also at odds with Alison over Rebecca's decision to work with Alison's ex, Stuart, selling cars, rather than go to university. Meanwhile Eddie, dumped by Holly and getting closer to Nicola, offers advice to Maurice, who feels that Louise is rejecting him.

Embarrassed by Louise's rejection of his marriage proposal Maurice is persuaded by Eddie to face her, leading to a mutual agreement. However things are fraught between Alison and Paul following her decision to train as a teacher and his belief that he is a bad father. Nonetheless they both attend the end of year concert at Joe's former school, organized by Rebecca, who decides her brother should take part. After a slow start Joe gets his entire family on stage with him and all of them come to important decisions after Maurice has collapsed in front of them.
