What's in a Name?

Fri, Jan 22, 1965

In this test pilot, Ann's parents are played by different actors; Ted Bessell plays Don Blue Sky, her agent who is also her boyfriend; and Ann has a group of three friends. Don thinks that Ann should change her name from Ann Marie to a more suitable stage name because every time he tells people her name, they ask "'Ann Marie' what?" Ann is hesitant because she knows that it would upset her parents, particularly her father. Sure enough, her father becomes very angry and won't speak to her unless she keeps her name. This episode was later changed to include the different actors and characters, and is episode 1.11 of the first season. Both versions are available on the Season 1 DVD set.

Thu, Sep 8, 196630 mins

Aspiring actress Ann Marie, recently arrived in New York City, is working at a newsstand in the lobby of an office building when she is spotted by two men looking to film a television commercial made to look like a hold up. Ann excitedly agrees to be the damsel in distress for the commercial to be filmed later that evening at the newsstand itself. That same day, Ann meets Donald Hollinger, a writer with Newsview Magazine, whose offices are located in that building. Ann and Donald, while friendly enough to each other, are on opposing sides of wanting to buy the same roll-top desk in a business moving sale. Even if the desk is 50% off, Ann can only afford to buy it from the money earned doing the commercial, so Donald seems to be her only obstacle. Despite having an unspoken attraction to each other, an unfortunate incident during the filming of the commercial leads to a series of misunderstandings between Ann and Donald which could prevent them from moving beyond spearmint seller and buyer.

Time for Arrest

Thu, Nov 3, 196630 mins

An embarrassed Ann is arrested and in jail while wearing only a revealing leopard skin cave woman outfit. Despite she not wanting any of her friends or family to know her situation, she nonetheless calls Donald for help, he who jumps to all sorts of conclusions once he sees her behind bars wearing what she's wearing, and because she broke their date that evening telling him she was too tired to go out. However, Ann still isn't certain why she's in jail. The story... After breaking her date with Donald, Ann received an urgent plea from her friend Margie to fill in for her at work, a nightclub called The Cave whose theme is a prehistoric cave. Despite her reluctance, Ann was forced to wear the revealing costume for the job or else Margie would end up losing her job. Seeing her apprehension about wearing the costume in front of many people, Al Morgenthaler, one of Margie's boss' associates, gets Ann transferred from working the coat check to working the more intimate private dining room. Ann learns she was arrested for the goings-on in the private dining room that evening, most specifically between Morgenthaler and another man named Eddie Parelle, both who are not what they represented to Ann. Ann has to balance telling the police any important information she overheard at that gathering against her fear that Morgenthaler, Parelle or any of their thugs might come after her for being a snitch. Nonetheless, it's the seemingly salacious but purely innocent details of the story that embarrass Ann.

Among My Souvenirs

Thu, Jan 5, 196730 mins

As Ann and Don are going through her childhood mementos at her parent's house trying to figure out what she should take back to New York, they find most of those mementos are of or from Freddie Dunlap - who Ann nicknamed Bunny because of his overbite - Ann's first childhood sweetheart, to whom she got engaged in the fourth grade. Their friendship lasted all through their school years until he left town when Ann was eighteen. She hasn't seen him since. Stories of Freddie are making Don jealous. So Don isn't too happy when Judy suggests to Ann that she return one of those mementos, Freddie's mother's ring, which obviously meant more about Ann and Freddie's relationship than their fourth grade promise to each other. In investigating Freddie's whereabouts, Ann and Don learn that he is no longer somewhere in California where Ann thought, but living on 73rd St. in New York City, five blocks away from Ann's apartment. Ann admits that she wants to see Freddie just to revisit their happy times and reminisce, which Don begrudgingly allows. After their meeting, Ann was happy that she saw him solely as a friend, but Don thinks that Ann is leading him on and that Freddie, who is going through marital problems, wants to rekindle his romance with Ann. Both Don and Ann hope that the most they can do after they find out Freddie's true intentions is that one can tell the other "I told you so".

Regardless, Ann feels that Don should buy a pair of shoes from her to support her, which he does. Ann ends up doing better business than she anticipates, but runs into problems when her customers run into problems by running out of their shoes, which are falling apart as they wear them. In Connecticut, Jerry and Margie have made an appointment with a Justice of the Peace to get married, hopefully with Ann and Don standing up for them. They also plan on having a wedding dinner in Connecticut for four, followed by Jerry and Margie embarking on their honeymoon at a mountain chalet there, while Don and Ann can take the train back into town. Following the wedding, Don and Ann learn from the Justice that the first train back to New York isn't until the morning, which means that Don and Ann have to stay at the chalet overnight, and that Ann has to notify her answering service since she is waiting to hear about an audition. Things get dicey as they arrive at the chalet, which only has one extra room available, meaning either that Don and Jerry have to share a room and Ann and Margie have to share a room, ruining Jerry and Margie's wedding night, or that Don and Ann have to share a room, which they may not comfortably be able to do at this early stage in their relationship. Further problems ensue when Ann's parents try to telephone her and jump to conclusions when they hear from her service that Ann is staying in Connecticut following the wedding, they assuming the wedding being hers and Don's.

Ann believes that her mother conveniently being out of town and Donald's eventual easy going understanding about her forgoing a date with him to be with her father on her birthday are all signs that her and her father's "date" is really a ploy to get her to a surprise birthday party, which she mentions to Judy. A perceptive Judy, who has not been invited to a surprise party and who learns from Don that he has not been invited to a surprise party, knows that Lew's invitation is not really a surprise party in disguise. So Judy, with Don's help, decides to organize a surprise party for Ann at her own apartment, as she knows that Ann will be disappointed if a surprise party does not materialize. As Ann and Lew's night progresses and Ann slowly comes to the realization that her date with her father is nothing more than that, it may be difficult to get Ann to the surprise party, especially as Lew, the person directing the date with Ann, has no idea that it is happening.

Harold's rationale for not spending money is that if it isn't good enough, it's not worth spending money on. So in Harold's mind, nothing ever seems to be good enough. But accommodating Ann allows them to stay, which in turn causes a spillover effect on equally accommodating Judy and Leon, equally accommodating Donald, and a local hotel, the latter however not for Harold and Edith's honeymoon. Ann is excited for the opportunity and wants to do Sharon proud by making the perfect acceptance speech, which Don says he'll write for her. What Don can't do however is get the bowling ball off of Ann's big toe, she who put it there after reading an article about a man who bowls with his toes. Ann has two concurrent tasks in the lead up to the awards show, number one to get the ball off her toe - which doesn't seem to be happening with any ease, even after visiting every emergency service personnel she can think of - and number two to find another of her play colleagues to attend the awards show instead, at which she equally has little success. With the former, the most useful advice provided is from an emergency room doctor, who tells her that taking a muscle relaxant will relax her big toe at which time the ball should fall off. Taking an excessive number of pills has its own negative consequences, but Ann is most concerned about her own internal thoughts of not wanting Sharon to win solely because of the predicament that was her own fault.
