Mysterious castles on secluded lochs and men dressed in kilts with bagpipes. Whiskey and the Loch Ness Monster: The clichés about Scotland are well-known. What few know: Great Britain's northernmost region boasts fascinating nature and wildlife. Spectacular aerial shots showcase the Highlands and some of the more than 500 islands. Highly stabilized cameras and experienced pilots, who were even employed on the "Harry Potter" productions, celebrate the full beauty of the Scottish landscape. But it's not just the vastness of the Highlands and the rugged coastlines that captivate many people; the rich flora and fauna also delight countless holidaymakers and nature lovers every year. Scotland has some of the largest seabird colonies in Europe. Otters and ospreys also benefit from the abundance of fish, and only in recent years have returned to hunting in the lochs and kyles, the lakes and fiords. Eagles were already extinct in Scotland and are experiencing a comeback thanks to dedicated bird conservationists. The symbol of the Highlands is undoubtedly the majestic red deer, which roam freely over the mountain ridges in many places. Their noisy rutting season takes place in the fall. Other sounds dominate spring. These are the mating calls of black grouse. Extreme slow-motion footage at over 2,000 frames per second captures the breathtaking battles in all their glory. A brief flap of wings thus becomes an aesthetic choreography. Just as the animals themselves, the people shape the northwest of Great Britain. Alistair Sutherland has lived in the Highlands for almost his entire life. On his small farm, he keeps sheep and the mighty Scottish Highland cattle - with their shaggy fur and massive horns, they appear as rugged as the landscape. Yet Alistair gets along wonderfully with these primitive animals and even recognizes their cuddly side. Fisherman Callum MacInnon leads a very different life on the Isle of Skye, one of the most beautiful islands in the Hebrides. For him, life without the sea is unimaginable. Several times a week, he goes out and releases his lobster pots. It's a lucrative business, even though his catch has diminished over the years. Nevertheless, he hopes that his grandchildren will still be sailing the small red boat into the often raging North Atlantic.

In Krüger park, South Africa's major natural reserve, about once in a generation a pride of lions includes a rarity: white cubs. This time two are born to the sister of a lioness with two elder, regular 'golden' cubs, whose natural camouflage is a major hunting and hiding advantage. The tiny pride is precarious anyway, having lost its sole male, with three lion brothers roaming around, eager to render a lioness mating-ready again by killing her offspring. Meanwhile prey and even the cubs are in danger from hyenas and leopards, as everyone lurks for a 'free meal', and some prey defending themselves and their young prove fearsome, notably buffaloes.

In Namibia (and Southern African neighbor states), the brown hyena is nicknamed beach wolf as he frequently patrols the sea shores, hunting for seals and scavenging, the last less then one often thinks. There they live and especially raise their young in groups, but some hunt alone and in the world's oldest sand desert. German zoologist Ingrid Wiesel studies them for two decades, yet has little to show for her use of technology, notably tracker collars and trap cameras, being outsmarted by the predators, and is obsessed with female Tosca, apparently unable to remain professionally objective.

The Arctic is changing - rising temperatures are melting the supposedly "eternal ice" of the North Pole region. In view of global warming, it seems only a matter of time before the Arctic waters are completely free of ice. This change has dramatic effects. The polar bear was for a long time the largest and most dangerous hunter in the Arctic. But now that the ice is increasingly disappearing and this loss is making life difficult for the polar bear, another is taking over the top of the food chain: the killer whale, or orca, better known - or rather infamous - as the "killer whale". The Terra Mater documentary "Orcas - Advance into the Arctic", which was produced as a co-production with Thirteen and NDR Naturfilm/Doclights, presents the massive changes taking place in the ecologically particularly sensitive polar region. The two main protagonists of the Arctic animal world on land and in the sea - the polar bear and the orca - serve as an impressive example. In addition to scientists who observe and study the increased appearance of orcas in the Arctic, the film team also relies on reports from the local population: experienced Inuit hunters tell of their encounters with the notorious "killer whales". The shrinking ice allows the orcas to advance further The reason for the more frequent appearance of the distinctive marine mammals is obvious: in summer, the ice in the Arctic has been retreating further and further for years - this opens the way for the orcas to new, previously inaccessible waters in the polar region. The killer whales owe their name to their towering dorsal fin: this prevents the animals from covering long distances under the ice cover - because of the fin they can hardly break through the ice when they have to surface to get some air. Given the shrinking ice areas, however, the orcas can now advance much further into the Arctic waters. During the filming of this documentary, a professional film crew was able to film orcas in the Arctic for the first time ever. A key scene is the collective, coordinated hunt of a group of orcas for narwhals - an astonishing behavior that even experts have never observed before. In the Arctic, however, polar bears are finding it increasingly difficult to catch their original main food: seals. The shrinking ice surfaces are increasingly preventing the bears from getting close enough to the seals on the ice to surprise and attack them. The "white giants" are forced to adapt In recent times, polar bears have been forced to increasingly use other sources of food when looking for food. Another scene, never filmed before, offers an unusual sight: in this case, it is not grizzly bears fishing for char in a Canadian river - but polar bears... However, the polar bears are still very clumsy due to a lack of experience. In order to survive in the long term, the "white giants" will have no choice but to adapt. In any case, the polar bear has already lost its position at the top of the Arctic food chain - to the orca, the new ruler of the Arctic Ocean.

Sri Lanka's fauna, partially migrated from India, which has been accessible by land at geologically recent times, is extremely rich and varied. However since the British colonists decided to plant first coffee, then tea, much of the forests has been cleared, leaving ever smaller pristine patches, sometimes completely cut-off. Some animal populations are rare, even including unique subspecies.
Episode 165
The waters around Sri Lanka are naturally at least as rich as the land. Two different monsoons, northwest and southeast, mean about all year part of the island receives heavy rains, which carry organic and mineral material in streams springing from the mountains. So maritime wildlife is abundant, with lots of fish in shallow coastal waters with reefs and many ship wrecks, attracting intense fishery as well as natural predators, from predatory fish and aquatic birds to dolphins and a unique population of whales.

Alaska is a rich country for wildlife, but also very hard, especially the long, icy winter. Many species resort to hibernation, like bears, in caves or high upon giant trees, which they leave in time for the retreat of first and snow. Some can keep hunting or fishing even when waters largely freeze, like the otter who simply dives under. Winter coats grown by adapted species serve even during a snowy blizzard. The sea never quite freezes, its cold water is most fertile to support microorganisms and the predatory chain, from herrings to whales. People also fish for large schools of species like cod and salmon, sometimes outsmarted by natural predators.

The Amur serves as a very long border between China, where agriculture was developed since Mao's Cultural revolution and Deng's general leap forward expanded to other sector while practically all the landscape is now man-made, and Russian Siberia, where the economy remained more modest and traditional, which leaves more wildlife somewhat pristine. After centuries of hotly contesting the border, each superpower's regional capital now simply faces the other, with mass tourist exchanges. A few Amur tigers still roam about freely in Russia, while China nearly exterminated the subspecies, but now invests in breeding for nature reserve conservation and loads of admiring tourists.

Episode 182
The mighty Amur takes that name at the joining of its two main 'tributaries', springing from the same scared mountain in Mongolia, where Ghenghis Khan chose his underground tomb. The westernmost crosses arid, wolves-roamed lands in Inner and Outer Mongolia, where surrounding plains and even its bed may run dry in bad summers, causing slaughter among the largely migratory wildlife, which also must cope with merciless winters when even the stream itself freezes almost half a year. The northernmost brings comparatively easy prosperity to self-reliant Russian peasant in southern Siberia, massively visited by migrations from Mongolia and further lands.

Life in the wild is all about survival, but ultimately as species, so for sexual animals mating is the purpose of life. Evolution includes adaptations to seduce better, like brighter colors, ornaments - Often their are fights for the right to mate or even monopolize a harem, while other species are poly-amorous. Pheromones chemically help to find and seduce. When competition is numerous, being there first or jumping the cue may be decisive. Mates can be attracted by nesting, especially in dense colonies. Courtship may comprise elaborate rituals, like ballet, and consume lots of energy, some suitors are even devoured before or after copulation. Some mate just for once, others to raise offspring or for life, but infidelity may still occur.

Uganda is still what travellers consider an 'insider tip'. Off the tourist map, a place still in the shadows of its past. Visitors, including scientists and conservationists, had a difficult time in the civil war-stricken country. Poaching had endangered many of Uganda's most iconic animals including Mountain gorillas, cave elephants, the chimpanzees and even the tree-dwelling lions. But now the national parks have been restored and Uganda's wildlife is once again thriving. This is a celebration of their survival.
